This $33.2 Million Private Island in the U.K. Has Long Been an Under-the-Radar Creative Haven

In the Blackwater Estuary off the Essex coast just 40 miles northeast of central London, Osea is not your typical island escape. Accessible by boat, air, or an ancient Roman causeway that appears only at low tide, the sprawling 380-acre island compound is now on the market for £25 million (about $33.2 million) with Knight Frank and Fine & Country. It's an audacious offering, not only in its scale and seclusion but also for its cultural imprint and its rich, secretive past. During World War I, Osea served as a clandestine naval base known as 'SS Osea,' and during World War II a bomb hit the island when it fell short of its London target, adding a layer of intrigue to its already storied legacy. Osea was later owned by Cambridge University but returned to private ownership in the 1950s.
Today, Osea is more than a private island—it's a stage, a studio, a sanctuary. Since 2004, under the ownership of music producer Nigel Frieda (best known for his work with English girl group the Sugababes), the village-like compound has quietly evolved into one of Britain's most discreet creative hubs. Stormzy wrote and recorded much of his This Is What I Mean album here, describing the process as 'a very surreal, spiritual experience.' Rihanna has stayed. So has Charli XCX, while Olly Murs chose it as the setting for his 2023 wedding, the Independent reported.

There's a kind of magical, cinematic quality to the island, which hasn't gone unnoticed by the film and literary worlds either. The Woman in Black—both the 1989 TV adaptation and the 2012 Daniel Radcliffe-led version—used Osea as a haunting backdrop, as did HBO's The Third Day with Jude Law. Ellery Lloyd set his New York Times bestselling fictional drama The Club here, too.
In many ways, Osea is like a village, its buildings being a patchwork of styles from a variety of eras. A grand Edwardian manor and the Captain's House sit along the waterfront, both styled for grand-scale entertaining, and a former orphanage has been reborn as luxury apartments. In all, there are 38 residential properties offering a total of 90 bedrooms and 61 bathrooms, plus a pub, a couple of swimming pools, a state-of-the-art recording studio, and a helipad.

The infrastructure is surprisingly robust—think: water treatment facilities, electrical substations, dry docks, and orchards—and the business model includes event hosting, holiday lettings, music production, and retreats.
But for all its celebrity pedigree and curated rustic charm, Osea is also a functioning enterprise. 'Osea Island presents an exceptionally rare, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire a private island of remarkable scale and historical significance,' says Georgie Veale, senior negotiator at Knight Frank. 'Offering extensive land and multiple properties, it affords the purchaser unparalleled exclusivity, privacy, and a wide range of potential uses.'Best of Robb Report

Jake Larson, World War II veteran turned TikTok star, dead at 102

Jake Larson, the World War II veteran and social media star known as 'Papa Jake,' has died, his granddaughter posted on his social media accounts Saturday. He was 102. 'Our beloved Papa Jake has passed away on July 17th at 102 years young. Please know, he went peacefully and was even cracking jokes til the very end,' granddaughter McKaela Larson said in the posts. A member of the nation's 'Greatest Generation,' Larson gained a loyal following on social media as a centenarian, posting as @storytimewithpapajake on TikTok, where he racked up more than 1 million followers with his stories about his life and military service. CNN's Christiane Amanpour interviewed Larson in Normandy, France, in June 2024 on the 80th anniversary of D-Day. Sitting in a wheelchair just steps away from the shoreline, he said he remembered the invasion 'like it was yesterday.' 'I got off the landing craft and had water right up to my chin,' he told CNN. 'We were all kids.' Larson told Amanpour he was just 15 years old when he enlisted in the National Guard — lying about his age at the time. 'I don't think I was a hero. I was just like anybody else. We were all in this together,' he said, adding he was there to tell the stories of his many friends who died during the invasion that turned the tide of the war. Asked by Amanpour whether he and other soldiers knew what they were fighting for at the time, Larson said, 'Oh, definitely. That we knew. Every one of us was prepared to give our life to kick Hitler's ass out of Europe. … And we did.' Just over three weeks ago, Amanpour won an Emmy for her interview with Larson, an honor she shared with him. He reacted to the award in a video sent to Amanpour: 'It's phenomenal. And here I am, little country boy that joins the infantry at 15 years old and I come here now, 102, going on 103 and I'm winning something like this? There is a God.' 'My dad had an epic, epic life,' his son, Karlan Larson said in a brief phone interview with CNN. His father's Emmy is 'proudly displayed' in his living room, which Karlan Larson told CNN would be 'handed down to family members — the grandkids will have to figure out a schedule.' Jake Larson was 'overjoyed' that Amanpour shared her statue with him, his son said.

‘Seedy' sex festival sparks noise complaints as 1000 swingers descend on sleepy town for 3-day event: ‘Loud moaning sounds'

Come one, come all. Kinky revellers have descended on a sleepy English village for the country's biggest annual swingers festival, sparking noise complaints from conservative locals outraged by ear-splitting orgasms. Swingathon is taking place this weekend in the town of Allington, two hours north of London, and has attracted around 1000 amorous attendees. That's more than the number of residents who live in the quaint village, which has a listed population of just 897. 4 Preparations for the three-day festival of frisk have been ongoing for weeks. The annual festival first began back in 2020, and is becoming bigger each year, much to the chagrin of locals. 'We're becoming known as the swingers capital of England just because of this festival and that's not a title we want,' one anonymous resident told Southwest News Service. 'It's mostly elderly people and families here so you can imagine them spitting their tea out when they learned we were to be the home of Swingathon.' 'It's usually the talk of the village. Some say let consenting adults do whatever they want to do, but I know many are not pleased they have chosen here for such activities,' they added. 'It's just a bit seedy and sleazy isn't it? Not for me I'm afraid.' In recent years, residents have publicly complained about an onslaught of 'loud moaning sounds' coming from the site. 4 Aerial view of two lounge chairs and the word 'KINK' written on the grass at the event. Tom Maddick / SWNS 4 Swingathon's Matthew Cole defended the adults-only event. Tom Maddick / SWNS However, the organizer of the summertime sex festival insists there's nothing dirty about the event. 'Contrary to some beliefs, there are no keys in bowls, seedy music, lecherous individuals or a high level of STIs amongst this community,' Swingathon's Matthew Cole claimed. 'In fact, individuals within this community are respectful, conscientious, and more likely to practise safe sex or be regularly tested than the average person you might meet on a night out in a club,' the organizer added. 'The team are passionate about normalizing the sexual freedom that alternative lifestyles provide and continue to strive against prejudice and adversity to bring the community a safe and inclusive social, play and learning space.' Tickets for the frisky festival go for around $250 USD, with live music, DJs, workshops and demonstrations that are advertised as being set in a 'safe, inclusive space' that 'celebrates diversity.'

"Arthur" TikTok Goes Viral After Trump's PBS Funding Cuts

Everyone's inner child is heartbroken after the Trump administration received approval to reportedly cut all federal funding for public broadcasting, leaving programs like PBS in limbo. PBS President and CEO Paula Kerger said the cuts "go against the will of the American people," in a written statement. "The Senate just approved a rescissions package that goes against the will of the American people, the vast majority of whom trust PBS and believe we provide excellent value to their communities. These cuts will significantly impact all of our stations, but will be especially devastating to smaller stations and those serving large rural areas. Many of our stations, which provide access to free, unique local programming and emergency alerts, will now be forced to make hard decisions in the weeks and months ahead. There is nothing more American than PBS. Despite today's setback, we are determined to keep fighting to preserve the essential services we provide to the American public," Kerger said. The PBS channel has been home to many popular educational children's TV shows, including the Emmy-winning animated series Arthur, a show about an 8-year-old aardvark who explores real-life issues through the lens of a child and promotes healthy problem-solving and social skills for young kids. Well, the official Arthur TikTok page recently posted a video in response to the news of budget cuts, with the caption: "PBS has been defunded. This isn't goodbye yet." In the clip, the character Sue from Arthur is seen writing in her journal. "I never wanna go through another fire. But I also never wanna lose this feeling. That each day is special; that my friends are the best friends in the world; and that if we stick together, we can make it through just about anything." The TikTok has received over 350,000 views in less than 24 hours, and thousands of comments have expressed their heartbreak over Trump's PBS cuts. "You guys raised multiple generations and that won't be forgotten ever," one person wrote. "I can't believe these vile politicians defunded you. Fuck them," another person wrote. "Trump is trying to defund education. They know education means they have less power and voter base. Don't let them win. Continue to educate yourself," another person wrote. Others shared what the show Arthur has meant to their lives. "This channel was my everything. I learned how to speak English watching PBS." "I came to the U.S. when I was 4. I went into school knowing 0 English thanks to PBS kids I learned English by the 3rd grade fluently. I'm now about to be in 12th." "from a foster child that had no structure or love growing up. thank you for helping raise me into who I am." One person even shared that "Arthur's Reading Race" helped them start reading as an autistic kid. And this teacher said that PBS reinforced the "ethics" taught to them at home and helped them as a student. According to @arthursPBS, donating to your local PBS station is one way to help.
