Grey nomads help drive Roma's outback tourism boom

Grey nomads Shaun Elwood and Janet Tearle thought it would be a quick stopover when they pulled up at Roma in Queensland's Maranoa region.
But three days later, the Gold Coast couple was still ticking off tourist attractions in a town many motorists drove straight through.
According to Ms Tearle, there was just too much to do.
"I didn't realise this place was so big," she said.
"We went and saw the sculptures … the biggest bottle tree … the saleyards this morning … [and] a shooting exhibition on our first night here at the caravan park."
They have not been the only ones to enjoy the town of about 7,000 people.
The amount of money generated by tourism in the region has grown by 59 per cent over the past six years, according to Maranoa Regional Council.
Roma was awarded the Top Tourism Town by the Queensland Tourism Industry Council in 2024 and was one of four shortlisted as finalists this year.
As the centre of the Maranoa region, the town has historically been a hub for agriculture, mining and forestry.
But councillor Jane Vicent said there had been a concerted community effort to grow tourism over the past 10 years.
"There was a real drive [to make] Roma as a destination on its own," she said.
"We've always been seen as the gateway to the outback, but we're really trying to let people know Roma is a destination."
Will Fellowes first visited Roma as a tourist six years ago before moving there from Sydney after seeing what the town had to offer.
He and his partner Michael McLaughlin bought a 22-hectare block outside town and opened a gin distillery.
"This is your last Woolies before Mount Isa, your last chance for cheap fuel and still being attached to the country," Mr Fellowes said.
"But what we're seeing is people stopping here, spending days in the region, immersing themselves in what we've got before they head further west."
Mr Fellowes said their business was recently listed on a European GetYourGuide website which had generated international referrals.
They have been among a wave of new tourism businesses launched in the town since 2020.
"There are more than eight or nine new tourism products that have opened in Roma in the last five years alone," Mr Fellowes said.
The town broke records this year for one of the most popular events in its tourism calendar — Easter in the Country.
More than 15,000 people visited across the five-day festival, up by 1,500 since the previous record in 2019.
"It's always busy, but it was new record this year, which is great," Mr Fellowes said.
One of Roma's biggest year-round drawcards has been Australia's largest cattle saleyards, which has attracted an increasing number of curious visitors.
Former grazier Lloyd Harth, who volunteers as a tour guide, said he had noticed an influx of city visitors keen to learn about the bush.
"For a lot of city people, they've got no idea," Mr Harth said.
"They think their meat comes off the shelf and have no idea where it originally came from or how it got there."
The Roma Saleyard offers guided tours on sale days.
"When I started here, our biggest turnout would've been 70 or 80 people on a Tuesday morning," Mr Harth said.
"Our biggest last year was 235, and we had almost 200 people here yesterday."
He said tourists often travelled to the town specifically to see the saleyard and enjoyed reconnecting with the land.
"That's the reason we do it — and we do it for nothing — to try and educate people," he said.
"We've got a big divide between city and country, and it's getting wider and wider."
Mr Elwood and Ms Tearle said they had ticked off their list of tourist attractions, packed their caravan, and were ready to move on from their first major stop on their trip around Australia.
They were confident their spot at the caravan park would be snapped up before they were barely on the highway.
"It's a massive turnover — every day, people in and out," Mr Elwood said.
"You'd be surprised how many people have come and gone since we've been here."

Northern Territory Parks is reminding hikers to carry personal location devices and be well prepared when they head into the outback after a man was rescued from the Larapinta Trail in central Australia this week. Perth resident Mark Foley was walking the breathtaking track through the West MacDonnell Ranges/Tjoritja National Park west of Alice Springs when he started to feel unwell. "I had a skin sore, which one of the guys was fixing up and I all of a sudden felt very dizzy," the 62-year-old said. Mr Foley and his friends were well prepared and one of them used a device to send out the alarm. A few hours later, Mr Foley was airlifted to Alice Springs Hospital, where he received treatment for infection and dehydration. Senior director for Parks and Wildlife Operations Chris Day said the incident was the second rescue of a hiker from the Larapinta Trail that week. "It starts well before you get on the walk, that's the key. It's planning and preparation," the Parks ranger of 44 years said. Mr Day recommended all hikers or people adventuring into the outback carry a personal locator beacon (PLB) so rescuers could easily find them in an emergency. "Number one is that communication device, the personal locator beacon, or increasingly these days these messaging devices, which both have the ability to raise an alarm," he said. Source: Northern Territory Parks After a three-day stint resting in Alice Springs, Mr Foley was given the all clear by doctors to return to the trail. "I rejoined the trip at Standley Chasm," he said. Mr Foley said the experience had not deterred him from future hikes, but he was grateful his group was carrying a location and communication device. "It's just so essential," he said.

ANALYSIS Talk about worst kept secrets. Earlier this week, federal treasury accidentally let slip what should have been a doozy … the much spoken of housing accord was on track to fail. That key Labor policy of delivering 1.2 million homes over five years was going to fall short. 'Stop press and clear the front page!' Said no one. This kind of leak is like me accidentally revealing I'm not on track to qualify for the 100 metre sprint at the next Olympics. Treasurer Jim Chalmers didn't seem too worried about it. Although he did concede 'more effort' would be required to make the target. The housing accord covers a period from 1 July, 2024, until end of June 2029. So, it's just completed its first year. Each year, 240,000 homes need to be completed in order to be on track for the target. In the first year, around 170,000 homes were completed. If this pace continues, we'll end the five years 350,000 homes behind target. Let's break it down to quarters, because all the economics boffins love quarterly data. We need 60,000 homes completed each quarter. In the first two quarters of the financial year, there were about 45,000 completions each. That then dropped to 43,500 in the third quarter. Completion data for the most recent quarter is yet to be released, but the ABS reported just over 42,000 building commencements, so we're getting further away. Meanwhile, building, borrowing and earning conditions aren't really getting any better. Economist Cameron Kusher from Oz Property Insights commented on the Australian Bureau of Statistics' Building Activity Data this week, noting 'While apartments are typically more expensive to build than houses, the average build cost of a new house in Australia has increased by almost $100,000 in the most recent two years'. When you consider the national house median price is at $888,000 according to recent PropTrack data, that's an increase of more than 10 per cent of the overall value in just two years. Then there are the shortages of skilled workers in the construction industry, the struggle that borrowers are facing as the RBA drags the chain on lowering interest rates and the fact that wages are moving about as slowly as the continents are drifting apart. And finally, what for many is the biggest hurdle of all, comes the last layer of government involved in the process: your local council. Because housing is a case of big picture to backyard. The Federal Government announces an initiative and invests some money in incentives, then it's over to the state governments to put in place their own policies and investments, including infrastructure that needs to be built around new housing. And if you are lucky enough to endure all of this and still be ready to invest in a new build, it's over to the local council for approval, but not before they ask residents if it's OK with them if something is built nearby that may create an inconvenience for them. And wouldn't you know it, those residents are often a fair bit more worried about what is happening in their own street than whether the nation is reaching its overarching housing targets. The housing accord should not be an impossible target, but it is. It won't be achieved and it never was going to be achieved. And as a result, housing will keep getting further out of reach for future generations of Australians.

Sydney's CBD is soaring to new heights with plans for two new skyscrapers that will eclipse the city's tallest buildings and dramatically transform the skyline. The City of Sydney council has endorsed proposed changes to planning rules which will increase the maximum height and floor space of new buildings. Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the proposal is in line with the Central Sydney planning strategy, a blueprint for height and floor space growth – the most significant review of planning in the city centre in over 45 years. The changes will increase the maximum permitted building height on in a precinct on Pitt St to 310m. This would be marginally higher than Sydney Tower - currently the tallest structure in the city. The proposal would be for a 70-storey commercial building at 56-60 Pitt St. Included in the proposal would be plans for public spaces and a pedestrian through-site link connecting Pitt St to Spring and Gresham streets. Another proposal to enable a second 300m-plus tower is also being finalised before public consultation. This second tower would be nearby at 1-25 O'Connell St and would be 319m. The 71-storey skyscraper and adjoining development will provide 150,000 square metres of commercial floor space. The space would include a public through-site link and precincts logistics hub, a shared loading dock for businesses in the precinct and adaptive reuse of heritage buildings. Both sites are located in the northern tower precinct of Central Sydney favoured by financial, legal, property and technology sectors, according to the City of Sydney. 'If we want Sydney to maintain its status as a global city and economic powerhouse, its vital that we safeguard economic floor space whilst allowing residential development to continue in the city centre,' Ms Moore said in a City of Sydney release. The strategy works to allow the skyline to rise at the same time as ensuring sunlight continues to reach popular public spaces such as Hyde Park and the Royal Botanic Garden. 'It was the product of three years of deep research by City staff, who worked block by block, carefully examining the way our city works and where sunlight falls,' Ms Moore said. According to Ray White Head of Research Vanessa Rader, building skyward is strategic and practical to grow in the city centre. 'Sydney historically has had lower height restrictions in order to keep Sydney Tower as the highest landmark,' she said. 'You look at other cities like Melbourne – they have much higher buildings. 'Sydney Tower is a bit of an ageing building now when you look at the new buildings that are coming up. Just look at Barangaroo and Crown – its great to see that we are competing with the rest of the world in terms of having these landmark structures.' Ms Rader said the development around the CBD and existing public transport also creates hubs which take a leaf out of international cities transport orientated, high density developments. 'We are probably going to go through a period of seeing consolidation of sites – like the one on Pitt Street,' she said. 'A lot of kind of smaller, older style buildings or secondary buildings consolidated into these larger sites in order to cater to these new, beautiful and premium buildings.'
