US tariff expected to have limited direct impact on Sarawak's economy, says deputy minister
KUCHING (May 20): Sarawak is adapting its economic policies to navigate the challenges posed by the recent introduction of reciprocal tariffs by the US, said Datuk Dr Malcolm Mussen Lamoh.
The International Trade Industry and Investment Deputy Minister stated that the new 24 per cent reciprocal tariff on Malaysian imports into the US, set to take effect after a 90-day postponement from April 9 to July 8, 2025, has raised concerns but is expected to have a limited direct impact on Sarawak's economy.
'Sarawak's exports to the US amounted to RM1.2 billion in 2023. These total exports only contributed 0.9 per cent to Sarawak's total exports, with the main product being ferro alloy,' he said in response to a question from Johnical Rayong Ngipa (PDP-Engkelili) during the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today.
Mussen stated that Sarawak's main exports consist of liquefied natural gas (LNG), petroleum, palm oil and aluminium.
'The exports amounted to RM102.6 billion in 2023 which contributed 78.4 per cent to Sarawak's total exports.
'Our main export market is Asia, which contributed 73.4 per cent to the overall export market. This new tariff is expected to have minimal direct impact on Sarawak,' he said.
Mussen emphasised that Sarawak will continue to refine its economic policies by adapting to global trade dynamics, in line with proactive measures taken by the federal government to address the impact of the reciprocal tariff.
Among the measures are strengthening trade partnerships, diversifying export markets while enhancing supply chain resilience, investing in strategic industries, and exploring bilateral trade agreements to safeguard economic stability.
Mussen also said that a National Geoeconomic Command Centre (NGCC) has also been established to formulate a comprehensive strategy to mitigate the impact of the US tariff on Malaysia's economy and key sectors.
'Malaysia will continue strategic high-level engagement with the US, and the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (Miti) will utilise the Malaysia-US Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) to address these concerns.

Mohamed Khaled holds trilateral talks ahead of Cambodia-Thailand border meeting
KUALA LUMPUR: Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin today held a trilateral meeting with his counterparts from Cambodia and Thailand in preparation for the upcoming General Border Committee (GBC) meeting between the two neighbouring countries on Aug 7. In a Facebook post, Mohamed Khaled said the virtual meeting was attended by Cambodia's Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister General Tea Seiha, as well as Thailand's Acting Defence Minister General Natthaphon Narkphanit. "This meeting marks an important step in preparing for the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) session scheduled to take place on Aug 7 in Kuala Lumpur. "With the spirit of Asean, Malaysia is fully committed to supporting a peaceful, Asean-led resolution process in line with our shared regional values," he said. The meeting was also joined by armed forces chief General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar and Defence Ministry Deputy Secretary-General (Policy) Mohd Yani Daud. Kuching to have longest riverfront and new landmark garden

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The Kuching Waterfront is to be extended and will be Malaysia's longest river waterfront under a development plan by the Kuching North City Hall which includes a 16-hectare floral garden, inspired by Singapore's Gardens by the Bay. Kucing North mayor Hilmy Othman said the extended Kuching Waterfront will run from Sungai Bintangor to the Satok Bridge, the Borneo Post reported. The project is part of plans by the city hall (DBKU) to transform Kuching into a low-carbon, globally competitive capital city under Sarawak's development strategy. The 16-hectare floral garden, one of the headline projects, is to be developed near Jalan Astana. Hilmy said the floral garden would serve as a major public attraction and eco-tourism destination, drawing both tourists and plant lovers. Complementing this is the upcoming Bamboo Gallery, a 25-hectare green architecture and sustainability education centre near Jalan Crookshank. 'These projects aim to preserve the site's natural greenery and heritage,' Hilmy said. He said DBKU would continue investing in infrastructure that blends sustainability with public benefit. The city has already installed more than 2,000 smart streetlights to cut energy use and reduce maintenance costs, along with over 300 CCTVs to boost security. A smart parking system, set to replace the coupon model, is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2025 and integrated into the iDBKU digital platform.
