Tata Sons expects reprieve from IPO deadline amid RBI rule review

By P R Sanjai and Baiju Kalesh
Tata Sons Pvt., the closely-held holding company of India's salt-to-software conglomerate, is not making any preparations for a near-term share sale as it believes the country's regulators will extend a deadline to take itself public, said people familiar with the matter.
Following engagement with officials, the company's leaders expect it will receive official communication from the Reserve Bank of India granting extension for an initial share sale amid a nationwide review of rules governing entities that are not public-facing and do not require public funds, said the people, who asked not to be named discussing information that's sensitive.
The RBI had earlier classified Tata Sons as a top tier non-banking lender, forcing it to list by September this year.
While a listing would simplify the complicated holding structure of the Tata Group, taking the company public risks making it a target for takeover — something that Tata Sons directors hold the power to veto in its current form.
A representative for the Tata Group declined to comment, while the RBI didn't immediately respond to an emailed query.
However, any delay in a Tata Sons' initial public offering means the debt-laden Shapoorji Pallonji Group won't get an opportunity to sell any of the illiquid 18.37% it owns in the Tata holding firm.
The 160-year-old conglomerate, which has been struggling with financial stress fueled by the Covid-19 pandemic, was looking to liquidate its stake in Tata Sons as a crucial step to pare debt.
Tata Sons cleared all debt from its balance sheet to avoid inclusion in RBI's 2023 list of top Non-Banking Financial Companies. While the RBI hasn't yet announced a decision on Tata Sons' status, Governor Sanjay Malhotra last month hinted at a differential regulatory framework for entities like it.
'It is dynamic,' Malhotra had said. 'Policies have to change with the times and so it is only in that context that we are going to review some of these policies related to Type-I NBFCs.'

Air India privatisation a disaster, says Manish Tewari

Congress leader Manish Tewari called the government's decision to privatise Air India and transfer its ownership to the Tata Group a 'disaster' over complaints about cancellations and delays, and described the airline as a 'management mess'. 'The Government of India should take Air India back from the Tata Group. They have run the airline into the ground,' he wrote in a post on X on Friday (August 1, 2025), calling the privatisation exercise a 'disaster'. He lamented the cancellations and delays by Air India 'at the drop of a hat', and claimed that these were happening without any explanations being offered by the airline. In a reference to appointees from Tata Group companies at the airline, he remarked that 'pilots and crew tell me that people who grow tea in Tata Tea, make steel in Tata Steel, make cars in Tata Motors are running Air India' and labelled the airline as a complete management mess. Tata Group took over Air India in January 2022 after it won the bid invited by the government for selling its 100% stake in the erstwhile national carrier. The airline has been at the centre of public and regulatory scrutiny since the June 12 crash in Ahmedabad that killed 260 people, the deadliest crash in the country in three decades, and the first involving a Boeing 787-8 aircraft.

Federal Bank net profit dips 14.6% to Rs 861 crore on MFI provisions

MUMBAI: A sharp increase in provisions pulled down quarterly profit at Federal Bank, India's sixth-largest private lender, even as asset quality and core earnings improved. Net profit declined 14.6% to Rs 861.8 crore in the quarter ended June 30, 2025, from Rs 1,009.5 crore a year earlier. The fall in profit was driven by a 177.4% surge in provisions and contingencies, excluding tax, which rose to Rs 400.2 crore from Rs 144.3 crore in the year-ago quarter. The rise in provisioning, largely linked to the agri and microfinance portfolios, weighed on earnings despite stronger performance in the bank's core lending operations. 'We have had a strong quarter in terms of operational performance,' said managing director and CEO KVS Manian. 'Besides the provisions for agri and microfinance sector, there has been no impact on asset quality. In the MFI segment, we have seen the peak of the slippage and expect that it will bottom out this quarter.' Manian also said that expectations on further rate cuts by the RBI were divided, and that any reduction would affect earnings. Operating profit rose 3.7% to Rs 1,556.3 crore from Rs 1,500.9 crore in the same quarter last year, backed by growth in the bank's lending business. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Net interest income increased 2% to Rs 2,336.8 crore, as interest earned grew 5.6% to Rs 6,686.6 crore, while interest expended rose faster at 7.7% to Rs 4,349.8 crore. The squeeze on spreads limited the pace of growth in core interest income. The bank's loan book expanded steadily, with net advances rising 9.2% year-on-year to Rs 2,41,204.3 crore. Retail loans rose 15.6% to Rs 81,046.5 crore. Deposits grew 8% to Rs 2,87,436.3 crore from Rs 2,66,064.7 crore in the year-ago quarter. Asset quality improved, with the gross NPA ratio falling to 1.91% from 2.11%, and the net NPA ratio declining to 0.48% from 0.60%. The capital adequacy ratio under Basel III rose to 16.03% from 15.57%, supported by growth in internal accruals. According to the bank's unaudited standalone results, provisioning continued to be the main drag on profitability in the June quarter. However, growth in loans and deposits, coupled with cleaner asset quality, indicated operational strength. Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays .
