Pitcher Shane Bieber heading to Blue Jays in deal with Guardians
Bieber, who is working his way back from Tommy John surgery in April 2024, has made five rehab starts. His most recent outing was Tuesday for Double-A Akron, in which he allowed one run on three hits and struck out seven in four innings. His next rehab start was scheduled for Sunday.
The Guardians are getting right-hander Khal Stephen from the Blue Jays.
Bieber had spent his entire career in Cleveland, including winning the AL Cy Young Award in 2020. He has a career record of 62-32 with a 3.22 ERA and 958 strikeouts in 136 games, with 134 starts since his debut in 2018.
He agreed to a one-year, $14 million contract last fall with a $16 million player option for 2026.
The 22-year old Stephen has a combined record of 9-1 with a 2.06 ERA in 18 games, with 17 starts, in the Blue Jays' farm system this season. He was a second-round selection (59th overall) by Toronto in the 2024 amateur draft. He made one start for Double-A New Hampshire following his promotion on July 20 before being placed on the injured list with right shoulder impingement.
The Guardians also dealt reliever Paul Sewald to the Detroit Tigers for a player to be named later.

Former Cincinnati Bengals offensive lineman La'el Collins is signing with the Dallas Cowboys after a workout with the team, according to Tommy Yarrish. Collins, 32, last played in an NFL regular-season game for the Bengals in December 2022, when he suffered a knee injury. Released by the Bengals in September 2023, Collins signed in 2024 with the Buffalo Bills, which moved him from tackle to guard. He was released in August 2024 by the Bills. Collins started all 15 games in which he played in his only season in Cincinnati. Collins played 74 games over six NFL seasons with the Cowboys to start his career. Ice hockey fans, players excited for World Juniors tournament coming to Minnesota
Minnesota hockey fans get an extra gift this holiday season. The World Juniors is coming to the state of hockey. "Like no other," described defenseman Logan Hensler. "Happens once a year. It's always on TV. People are always watching, talking about it. There's a ton of attention to it. It's a pretty cool experience." Hensler has been there before. The defenseman from Woodbury took gold last January. Now, he's trying to repeat as a large, talented group tangle for a roster spot on Team USA. "Your compete, your discipline. All around play. You get pushed every day by these guys," said Hensler. "It's just important you keep up and keep going. Push through." Hensler's last few months have been his most accomplished in hockey. He won the most recent World Juniors gold and was then selected 23rd overall by the Ottawa Senators in the NHL draft in June. "Dream come true," remembered Hensler. "Got there, it was a great experience. The moment I got picked was kind of a blur. Kind of a blackout moment. Really special. Great organization. Just happy my family was there to witness it." Hensler, the top Minnesotan selected in 2025, will be a sophomore with the Badgers this winter. But it might not be long before he trades red and white for Ottawa's colors. "This next coming year I'm going back to Wisconsin," said Hensler. "A big thing for me is taking it year by year. Just gonna take this year, see how it goes. See how I grow as a player.
