Demolition of 'deteriorating' Scarborough seaside café approved

A "deteriorating" seaside café is to be knocked down after plans were approved by North Yorkshire Holidays intends to replace the three-storey Waterfront Bar at 39 Sandside, Scarborough, with a four-storey structure, including a café on the ground floor, with three holiday flats on the upper officers acknowledged the demolition would see the loss of a "traditional structure", but said alterations to the original building meant it no longer contributed "to the character and appearance of the conservation area".The application was approved subject to conditions, including limiting the hours of the café from 09:00 to 23:00, Monday to Friday. One resident lodged an objection to the scheme, citing concerns about "further erosion of the historic scale of this part of Scarborough".They said the plan would not "respect the domestic character of Quay Street", adding, "Scarborough is also being overprovided with holiday lets".According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service a letter of support for the plan was also submitted, stating the applicant had undertaken other work in the area which, if matched by the new development, would "enhance the area".A report noted that the offer of an additional holiday accommodation unit respected "the existing character of the area".Officers concluded: "The building is beginning to deteriorate and may have a harmful impact on the street scene in the near future if left unaltered." Global coffee supply relief possible in three years, ICO head says

CAMPINAS, Brazil, July 3 (Reuters) - Global coffee supply could improve in three years as new plantations spurred by record high prices start producing, International Coffee Organization (ICO) Executive Director Vanusia Nogueira said on Thursday at an event in Brazil. The outlook, however, depends on market conditions remaining favorable enough for farmers to maintain their crops, Nogueira told journalists at an event organized by the Brazilian coffee exporters group Cecafe. Global coffee supply is tight as several years of production deficits, impacted by extreme weather in key producing regions, push prices up. Nogueira said it could take about three years for new coffee plantings to ease supply pressures. "These are plantations that will start producing in about three years, so then, in three years, we should have some additional supply." Nogueira said the end of successive deficits in the global coffee market could happen in 2026, depending on the weather in the main producing countries, such as Brazil, Colombia and Vietnam. "I think (the end of the deficits) will depend a lot on this climate issue," said Nogueira, noting that there is still some risk of frost for Brazil's crop in July.

Louis Dreyfus doubles coffee storage, processing capacity at Brazil's Varginha hub

SAO PAULO, July 1 (Reuters) - Louis Dreyfus Company on Tuesday opened an expanded coffee processing unit in Brazil's southeastern city of Varginha, more than doubling the plant's annual capacity for coffee processing and storage. Louis Dreyfus is one of the world's three largest green coffee merchants. The company said the Varginha expansion would position the hub as one of the largest and most advanced in Brazil, the world's No. 1 coffee producer and exporter. The Varginha unit's processing capacity is set to reach 2.5 million 60-kilogram bags following the expansion, while its storage capacity was increased to about 1 million bags, Dreyfus said in a statement. "This expansion will streamline the supply logistics for small and medium-sized coffee growers to meet both domestic distribution and export demand," said Arthur Graf, head of Dreyfus' coffee platform in Brazil. "Today's opening marks a significant milestone in our growth plans in Brazil, reaffirming our long-term commitment to the country and the national coffee sector," he added. The Varginha unit in Minas Gerais state is part of Dreyfus's broader coffee operations in Brazil, where it has been active for over 35 years. The company operates three major processing sites in the country, also including facilities in Nova Venecia and Matipo, alongside seven commercial offices in key coffee-producing regions. The Varginha hub focuses on arabica coffee.
