Jenna Ortega speaks up about 'Scream 7' exit rumours
Ortega, who played Tara Carpenter in 2022's Scream and 2023's Scream VI, exited the seventh movie in November 2023. She said at the time it was due to her "shooting schedule", reported Variety.
"It had nothing to do with pay or scheduling," Ortega revealed. "The Melissa stuff was happening, and it was all kind of falling apart. If Scream VII wasn't going to be with that team of directors and those people I fell in love with, then it didn't seem like the right move for me in my career at the time."
The "Melissa stuff" refers to Ortega's Scream co-star Melissa Barrera, who was sacked from Scream 7 after making social media statements against Israel and Palestine. The news of Ortega's departure came one day after Barrera's termination, prompting conjecture that Ortega was leaving the club to support Barrera.
Franchise producer Spyglass Media Group said in a statement, "Spyglass' stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech."
After Barrera's firing, Scream 7 director Christopher Landon posted and deleted a statement on X that read, "Everything sucks. Stop yelling. This was not my decision to make." About a month later, Landon exited the film and wrote on social media: "It was a dream job that turned into a nightmare. And my heart did break for everyone involved. Everyone. But it's time to move on."
Scream moved on with Kevin Williamson, the franchise's original screenwriter, stepping in to direct the seventh installment, which will feature the return of franchise icon Neve Campbell.

Adria Arjona could be the next Wonder Woman, James Gunn hints
James Gunn, the chief of DC Studios, may have just dropped a major hint about the future of Wonder Woman in his revamped DC Universe. During a recent interview, the director of Guardians of the Galaxy teased that actor Adria Arjona could be a great fit for the iconic superhero role. Gunn, known for his work on blockbuster superhero films, shared his thoughts on Arjona, who recently starred in Hit Man. When discussing the actress, he lightheartedly responded to rumours surrounding his social media activity, revealing that he had followed Arjona on Instagram, which led many fans to speculate that she might be cast as Wonder Woman. "I follow Adria on Instagram, but everybody came out, 'He just followed her, that means she's Wonder Woman,'" Gunn explained. He added, "She'd be a great Wonder Woman, by the way," he was quoted as saying by Variety. Gunn clarified that his support for Arjona wasn't solely based on her social media presence but was rooted in a long-standing professional relationship. "She was in a movie that I made seven years ago," he recalled, adding, "We've been friends and have known each other since that time," he said. "I followed her then, I didn't just follow her." While Gunn's statement sparked speculation about Arjona's involvement in the DC Universe, he didn't confirm anything outright. However, the remark suggests that Gunn has been considering the actress for some time, making her a potential candidate for the role of Wonder Woman in the future. Earlier this year, Gunn shared insights about his plans for Wonder Woman during an interview. He revealed that a new Wonder Woman movie is currently being written, which will be a key part of the revamped DC Universe. Gunn also announced that a series focused on the Amazonian heroine's homeland, Themyscira, is in development for HBO, Variety reported. While the TV series is progressing slowly, he assured fans that it was moving forward. In addition to Wonder Woman's solo projects, Gunn's expansive DC slate includes other major releases. His Superman film, starring David Corenswet as the iconic superhero, is slated for release in July 2025. Another exciting project, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, will hit theatres in June 2026, with Craig Gillespie at the helm. The DC Universe is not just limited to Wonder Woman and Superman. Gunn and his team are working on several highly anticipated films. One of the most unique projects in the pipeline is Clayface, a horror-themed origin story of one of Batman's most notorious villains. Directed by James Watkins with a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, Clayface is expected to bring a fresh take to the DC villain landscape when it arrives in September 2026.

Scarlett Johansson says her initial roles revolved around "desirability"
The 'Black Widow' star also acknowledges that the messaging is now different, "there are many more role models" and women are visible in powerful positions Scarlett Johansson, who is known for working in Avengers, Black Widow, and other successful blockbusters, recently spoke about how roles for women have changed since she entered Hollywood. The Scoop actor said when she started working, the roles she was offered usually centred around "desirability," and the goals and needs of her male counterparts. However, she feels that things are changing, and today Hollywood is bringing "a different time for young women," Variety reported. "The messaging is different, there are many more role models, women are visible in powerful positions, and the opportunities I have had to play women who don't have to be just one thing or another have increased," shared Johansson, she said. The A-list star has been vocal about her representation in the entertainment industry. In 2022, Johansson said she was so "hypersexualised" by the industry at a young age that she thought it would be impossible to branch out into different types of roles. "I kind of became objectified and pigeonholed in this way where I felt like I wasn't getting offers for work for things that I wanted to do," said Johansson. "I remember thinking to myself, 'I think people think I'm 40 years old.' It somehow stopped being something that was desirable and something that I was fighting against, " she was quoted as saying by Variety.
