Gold prices continued their record-breaking surge on Wednesday, defying analysts' expectations of a market correction, as both domestic and international rates reached new all-time highs.
According to the All-Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association (APGJSA), the price of gold per tola in Pakistan soared by Rs8,600 in a single day, settling at a historic high of Rs348,000. Similarly, the rate for 10 grams rose by Rs7,373 to close at Rs298,353.
The international prices for Pakistan also saw a notable jump, with gold prices climbing $86 during the day to reach a record $3,310 per ounce, inclusive of a $20 premium.
Commenting on the development, Adnan Agar, Director at Interactive Commodities, said gold continued its upward momentum, touching a record high of $3,319 before slightly retreating to $3,318. "Today's rally wasn't driven by any fresh news, particularly from the US side. Rather, it's a continuation of a multi-day bullish trend," he noted, adding that lingering concerns around the global trade war remain an underlying factor.
Agar further cautioned that while there might still be room for another $25 upside, the market is approaching technically overbought territory. "Once that threshold is hit, a correction of $100–150 can be expected," he said.
On Tuesday, gold per tola had already climbed by Rs600 to close at Rs339,400, highlighting the persistent demand and bullish sentiment in the market.
Meanwhile, the Pakistani rupee posted a slight gain against the US dollar on Wednesday, appreciating by 0.04% in the inter-bank market.
By the close of trade, the rupee settled at 280.46, up by Rs0.11 from the previous day's closing rate of 280.57.
On the global front, the US dollar held onto a modest rebound, as investors paused after several weeks of heavy selling, with markets steadying ahead of further developments in US trade negotiations. Moreover, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) raised a total of Rs1.225 trillion through two separate auctions held on April 16, 2025.
In the Pakistan Investment Bond - Floating Rate (PFL) Semi-Annual Auction, SBP raised Rs260.83 billion, with Rs67.62 billion from 5-year bonds and Rs193.21 billion from 10-year bonds. Notably, all bids for the 2-year bonds were rejected. In the Market Treasury Bills (MTBs) Auction, SBP raised Rs964.63 billion across various tenors. The breakdown included Rs284.38 billion from 1-month bills, Rs135.02 billion from 3-month bills, Rs76.24 billion from 6-month bills, and Rs469 billion from 12-month bills.
Combining both auctions, the central bank mobilised a substantial amount to meet government financing needs, reflecting investor confidence in Pakistan's short and medium-term debt instruments.

WNBA players demand fair pay during All-Star Game with protest shirts and strong CBA negotiation turnout

The 2025 WNBA All-Star Game in Indianapolis wasn't just a showcase of elite talent—it became a stage for protest. Before tipoff, players from both teams walked onto the court in black shirts reading, 'Pay Us What You Owe Us,' signaling dissatisfaction with the league's handling of labor negotiations. 'That's something we wanted to make well known,' WNBPA president Nneka Ogwumike said. 'In the bubble, we always knew how to make a stand with some T-shirts, so we did that today. We look forward to negotiating our fair share and our value.' With the current collective bargaining agreement set to expire at the end of the 2025 season, a key agenda item during All-Star weekend was a long-anticipated face-to-face meeting between players and league officials. According to multiple players, the meeting was frustrating and marked by a lack of progress. "That's one of the things we're in the room fighting for," said Caitlin Clark ahead of the game. 'We should be paid more, and hopefully that's the case moving forward as the league continues to grow.' Clark noted that over 40 players attended the meeting—a mix of emerging stars and veterans alike. "That was the best part of it," she said. "I think we all understand how crucial this is for our careers and for shaping the future of the league." Fellow All-Star team captain Napheesa Collier echoed Clark's stance, calling it 'the most participation in league history.' As Collier put it, 'We're standing really firm on certain areas we feel strongly need to improve'—a message the league can no longer ignore.

Business activities remain normal in twin cities

ISLAMABAD: The business activities remained normal in the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, as businessmen did not observe a shutter down strike against the extraordinary powers of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to make arrests under Finance Act 2025. The tax-related issues concern the implementation of the Finance Act 2025, including arrest powers under 37A of the Sales Tax Act, payment of Rs200,000 through cash, e-bility, and other enforcement provisions introduced under the Finance Act 2025. Shops and businesses remained open in all the key and local areas including main Murree Road, Saddar, Satellite Town and old city. Meanwhile, President Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) Nasir Qureshi was of the view that the business community of the federal capital did not support the strike call. 'We have had discussion with Haroon Akhtar, SAPM on industries and he has assured to take up the matter with the PM - therefore, it's our responsibility to wait for a few days to see the outcome of his assurances,' he added. The 12-member committee has been constituted under the Chairmanship of Haroon Akhtar Khan, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production. The committee also included Minister of State for Finance Bilal Azhar Kayani, PM's Coordinator on Trade Rana Ehsan Afzal Khan, FBR Chairman Rashid Mehmood Langrial, and representatives nominated by the business community and chambers of commerce. The committee will hold detailed deliberations over the next 30 days and present a consensus-based and workable solution to the prime minister and the federal cabinet. The business community openly shared their concerns and suggestions during the meeting, and the government expressed its commitment to take all stakeholders into confidence. It was agreed that every effort would be made to address traders' concerns related to transactions and to avoid causing any difficulties for the business community. Meanwhile, President All Pakistan Anjuman-e-Tajiran Ajmal Baloch said that the traders will hold protest demonstrations across the country on July 26 against new amendments in the finance bill. 'We are waiting for the reply from PM Office, and in the meantime our token protest will be held as per schedule, in the second phase we will go for token shutter down strikes,' Baloch said. He slammed the bureaucracy and said that they work with deception, and if the government failed to take back the new powers given to FBR officers, we will increase pressure.
