PKK's disarmament marks milestone for regional peace, stability: Iraqi presidency
The PKK's disarmament process is an important and historic step toward ending decades of armed conflict and repeated security violations that have cost countless civilian lives, the Iraqi presidency said in a statement.
This development paves the way for a more stable and secure future, strengthening the prospects for peace and constructive cooperation across the region, it read, stressing the importance of full commitment from all sides to uphold security, respect sovereignty and support the legitimate rights of all communities.
The disarmament is also expected to "reinforce bilateral relations between Iraq and Türkiye, built on mutual respect, shared interests and a common vision for regional security and prosperity," it noted.
In a June-recorded address released earlier this week from Imrali Island prison off Türkiye's Istanbul, Abdullah Ocalan, the jailed leader of the PKK, declared that its over 40 years of armed struggle against Türkiye for self-rule was over, and details regarding disarmament will be swiftly implemented.
On Friday, a group of PKK militants burned their weapons in a symbolic ceremony in Sulaymaniyah province, according to Iraqi media.
The PKK, listed as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the United States, and the European Union, has rebelled against the Turkish government for more than three decades.

Mosul airport reopens after IS devastation, boosting Iraq connectivity
MOSUL: Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani officially reopened Mosul International Airport on Wednesday, marking a major milestone in the city's recovery from the devastation caused by the Islamic State group. The airport, heavily damaged during the 2017 battle to retake Mosul, is set to resume full operations within two months, reconnecting the city with regional and domestic destinations. Sudani's flight was the first to land at the restored facility, symbolising progress in Iraq's post-conflict reconstruction efforts. His media office stated, 'The airport will serve as an additional link between Mosul and other Iraqi cities and regional destinations.' Originally seized by IS in 2014, Mosul endured years of brutal occupation before Iraqi forces, supported by a US-led coalition, liberated the city in 2017. The airport remained inoperable until reconstruction began under former Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi in 2022. Airport director Amar al-Bayati confirmed the facility is now equipped for both domestic and international travel, though no official restart date has been announced. Before its destruction, the airport primarily served routes to Turkey and Jordan. The upgraded infrastructure includes a modern terminal, VIP lounge, and advanced radar system, with an annual capacity of 630,000 passengers. Istanbul mayor hit with new jail term for insulting prosecutor, media say

Imamoglu, who has been in jail pending trial since March over separate corruption charges, was sentenced to one year and eight months in prison for insulting and threatening the chief Istanbul prosecutor. The prison sentence must be confirmed by two appeals courts. It's the second time Imamoglu has been convicted of insulting public officials. In 2022, Imamoglu was sentenced to two years and six months in jail for criticising election board officials over a decision to cancel 2019 Istanbul elections, in which he defeated the ruling AK Party candidate. He has appealed that sentence but it has not yet been reviewed. Imamoglu denies the charges. "I've been fighting against the abuse of the judiciary and against its use as a political tool. This is indeed an insult against our nation," Imamoglu was quoted as saying by broadcaster Halk TV and other Turkish media. The 2022 conviction, if upheld, could prevent Imamoglu from participating in future elections. Istanbul University in March annulled Imamoglu's university diploma, without which he cannot stand as a candidate for president. Since October last year, police have detained more than 500 people, over 200 of whom were then jailed pending trial, under investigations into municipalities run by the main opposition CHP, Imamoglu's party. The CHP denies corruption allegations and calls them a politicised attempt by the government to remove electoral threats against Erdogan, a charge the government rejects. Wednesday's hearing was held inside a courthouse-prison complex in Istanbul's Silivri district, a site often used for high-profile and politically sensitive trials and where Imamoglu is currently being held.
