Billed as the most urgent infrastructure project in the country, this long-anticipated plan includes building a brand-new, two-tube tunnel beneath the Hudson River while revamping the current 115-year-old tunnel that's been limping along since the Pennsylvania Railroad opened it in 1910. The goal? Redundancy, reliability and (finally) some rail resiliency for the hundreds of thousands of daily commuters who rely on Amtrak and NJ Transit.
Five construction projects are already underway on both sides of the river, including the Tonnelle Avenue Bridge in North Bergen and the Hudson Yards Concrete Casing in Manhattan. The new tunnel will stretch nine miles, connecting the Palisades to Penn Station and eventually adding two more tracks to the busiest stretch of passenger rail in the country.
Beyond commuter convenience, this is a job-making machine: The project is expected to generate 95,000 jobs and nearly $20 billion in economic activity. That's not just a tunnel—it's a stimulus package with a shovel.
And the timing couldn't be more critical. The Northeast Corridor moves 200,000 people daily and powers 20% of the U.S. economy. Without this upgrade, a tunnel shutdown for repairs would cost the country over $100 million per day in lost time and productivity. 'The century-old tunnel is the single point of failure for the entire Northeast corridor,' Gateway Development Commission chief of public outreach Steve Sigmund told Hoboken Girl.
The new tunnel and a fully rehabbed original are expected to open by 2038. Until then, keep your MetroCard handy, but rest easy knowing a smoother, faster and less panic-inducing ride is finally on track.

The contract, which was announced by MTA in June, will be booked in the second quarter of the 2025/26 fiscal year, Alstom said. MTA last month said that pilot railcars from Alstom would be delivered in 2029 and enter passenger service on the Long Island Rail Road in 2030. All 316 railcars that were part of this order were expected to be delivered by 2032, it added. Those include 160 cars for the Long Island Rail Road and 156 for the Metro-North Railroad. MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber said in June that the deal was an early step in the agency's plan to purchase nearly 2,000 railcars as part of its $10.9 billion capital plan. Redburn Atlantic analyst James Moore said the contract supports expectations for a strong second quarter for Alstom after an expected slower start to its financial year. Moore estimated that Alstom booked orders of around 4.1 billion euros in the first quarter that ended in June, slightly below analysts' consensus, but said it was on track to exceed expectations with orders of more than 6 billion euros in the second quarter. Analysts polled by Visible Alpha have forecast second-quarter orders at 5.1 billion euros, he said. Alstom's shares were broadly unchanged compared to last close as of 0832 GMT, after rising 1.4% in early trading in Paris. ($1 = 0.8486 euros)

But WalletHub's methodology compares that service score against spending and Gotham's staggering costs knocked it more than 120 spots down the leaderboard. In short: great services, terrible value. That's right: Some of the clunky, steel beasts still trundling through Queens and Nassau County were brought out of retirement just to cover service gaps when Grand Central Madison finally opened in 2023. But relief is on the horizon—albeit a distant one. Dubbed M-9As, the new cars will feature upgrades both practical and posh: USB charging ports, glass windows, accessibility improvements like automatic bathroom doors and a design based on current reliable models. Lieber says this new order kicks off a $10.9 billion plan to purchase nearly 2,000 new railcars in total. If all goes to plan, pilot M-9As will roll onto the LIRR tracks in 2030, meaning they'll debut a mere 61 years after the original vision for East Side Access.
