Unwell firefighter taken to hospital after kitchen fire at Boon Lay flat, Singapore News
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) told AsiaOne it was alerted to a kitchen fire in a fifth-floor unit at Block 197D Boon Lay Drive at about 6.20pm.
Photos and videos of the incident posted to Facebook show white smoke billowing into the air as firefighters arrived.
Residents had gathered at the playground and walkways below the block.
A reporter from Chinese publication 8world who was at the scene heard glass shattering. About 100 had evacuated, according to the report.
SCDF said the fire was extinguished with a water jet and a hose reel.
A firefighter experienced fatigue and felt unwell during the operation. He was assessed by a paramedic and taken to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital for further checks.
The firefighter has since been discharged and given three days of medical leave.
The fire was likely caused by unattended cooking, according to preliminary findings.
"SCDF would like to remind the public not to leave any cooking or heating activities unattended, and any gas or electric supply should be switched off when not in use," it added.

BEIJING — The abbot of China's famed 1,500-year-old Shaolin Temple is under criminal investigation for alleged embezzlement, "improper relationships" with women and fathering illegitimate children, religious authorities said. In a statement issued on Monday, the state-supervised Buddhist Association of China said it approved the revoking of Shi's ordination certificate, adding that his "behaviours are extremely deplorable in nature, have seriously damaged the reputation of the Buddhist community and tarnished the image of monks." In 2015, a letter circulated online accusing Shi of misconduct and improper sexual relations. The temple denied the allegations at the time. Shi, known as Liu Yingcheng before he became a monk in 1981, has overseen the temple since 1987 and became its abbot in 1999, the temple's website showed. In 2008, the temple opened an online store, offering a range of goods including shoes, tea, T-shirts, and a kung fu instruction manual for 9,999 yuan (S$1,788). Its business ventures over the years also included book publishing, medicine, kung fu performances, film production, asset management and real estate. SINGAPORE - A lion dance troupe from Singapore's Yi Wei Athletic Association defended its title at the 15th Genting World Lion Dance Championship on July 27. Yi Wei had triumphed in 2023 to break Malaysia's 13-year stranglehold on the title at the competition, which is held biennially. In this edition, Yi Wei sent t wo teams of eight to compete in the battle of Chinese mythical creatures, and again came out tops . Its Team B was crowned the grand champion with a score of 9.78, and its Team A was first runner-up with a score of 9.66. Mr Lee Kai Ming, 30, a coach at Yi Wei, said: 'Winning this championship means a lot to us because this is a world-recognised lion dance competition, and we are representing Singapore. 'SG60 is coming soon, and we're happy that we can win this competition for Singapore,' he added. Organised and hosted by Resorts World Genting in Malaysia, the three-day tournament featured 40 competing teams hailing from nations and territories like China, Hong Kong and Australia. Mr Lee said that the Yi Wei teams began their preparations for the competition and planned their choreographies in April . Altar suspected to have sparked fire in Bukit Merah HDB flat; SCDF breaks in to contain blaze, Singapore News
A fire broke out at an HDB flat in Bukit Merah on Saturday (July 26), allegedly sparked by an altar inside the unit. Responding to AsiaOne's queries, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that they received a call for help involving a fire at 6.05pm on July 26 at Block 55 Lengkok Bahru. The fire involved the contents of a living room in a unit on the 12th floor, SCDF added. A resident living in the HDB estate was alerted to the fire when they heard a loud noise and saw multiple SCDF personnel outside the unit, reported Shin Min. The resident also told Shin Min that the fire was caused by an altar in the unit. Speaking to AsiaOne, SCDF said that they conducted forcible entry and managed to extinguished the fire with a water jet. They also said that the cause of the fire is under investigation. Queenstown MP Eric Chua visited the affected HDB unit following the incident. In a Facebook post that night, he said that the family who was living there had already been relocated to a temporary flat and that they were "holding up well". He also added that the fire was contained to that singular unit and that there were no injuries. At the same time, he commended SCDF, HDB, the Lengkok Bahru Residents' Network and Tanjong Pagar Town Council for their prompt action and support rendered to the affected household. [[nid:720603]]
