How to make midlife feet look good in sandals
A thoroughly good pedicure underpins my entire summer beauty regime. By good I mean one whereby my feet and toenails glisten like perspex. After all, it's the extremities (skin, feet, hair, nails) that give the most bang for your buck. Get these glowing and you can skip all else and remain impeccably groomed. Which brings me to my first point: before you even conceive of the colour, heels and cuticles must be tended to with assassin-like attention.
I call on Milly Mason, a nail artist who specialises in prestige pedicures (including Lily Allen's who incidentally has a 4.9 out of five star-rating on WikiFeet). Interestingly, Mason doesn't recommend removing hard heel skin with any sort of implement (it grows back quicker and thicker) but to nurture feet daily with a foot mask that includes Urea, a byproduct of protein known for its intense hydration. At high percentages (over 10 per cent) Urea acts as a keratolytic, helping to exfoliate the top layer of skin without need for mechanical tools. I've been singing the praises of Eucerin's Urea Repair Intensive Moisturising Lotion for years – it deals with rough patches (elbows, knees, heels) like nothing else I've tried.

For feet specifically however, Mason suggests something altogether more powerful: the 40 per cent Urea Chapped Skin Cream from German nail brand LCN, which sorted the cracks running up the backs of my heels within a week.
At night I've been doubling up with their Chapped Skin Balm to seal it all in, though I'll hazard a guess that Vaseline is as proficient at preventing moisture from escaping should you not have the latter.
Mason took a gentle electric buffing tool to my heels (Bare Feet by Margaret Dabbs does a good one) and rough outer toe skin before applying the cream, but a rudimentary foot file is all you need at home to keep hard skin from building into a monstrous layer. Mason says to stay clear of blades and rasps which are precarious at best. When it comes to toe length, she assures me that short is best. If you can feel your toenails pressing up against the front of your shoes then you could be causing long-term damage to the nail bed. As for soaking the feet, this should be done last, after filing, shaping and polishing, as painting onto damp toenails can result in a fungal or bacterial infection.
If you're doing your own pedicure – which, provided you have the right tools, is tremendously satisfying – then file toenails with an emery board, says Mason. Disposable ones are generally recommended though it's only really relevant if you're sharing nail files. Before polishing, push back cuticle skin with a cuticle softener and cuticle pusher, then lightly even the surface of the nail bed with a nail buffer (it has a much finer grit than a traditional file). You want as smooth a surface as possible for the polish to look its best – and for it to last.

Toeanails are generally a zone to experiment with one of the trendier shades (spearmint green and neons are doing the rounds this summer), though if you generally err on the side of restraint as I do, then Precious by The Gelbottle, is a mature ballerina pink worth a look. Alternatively, Mason suggests black. 'It looks crisp and fresh on toenails so long as it has a glossy finish,' she claims. I was unsure at first. Too gothic, too cool. But in reality there's nothing more classic. Even in summer. Just don't forget to drench the toes in cuticle oil and apply foot lotion.

Yikes, the sights you see in the foot region when the weather's hot. Can I just say – hello, has everyone folk forgotten about the joys of a good old fashioned nail brush? People spend a small fortune on nail art, but when it comes to £4 for a wooden (rather than plastic) nail brush...
Feet have become a passion I never thought I'd have – possibly because mine keep reminding me they deserve my full attention. Hard skin, corns, a shortened metatarsal that means my feet pronate, a bunion on my left foot (I had the right one removed which was one of the best things I ever did) I've seen and got them all.
That's why these days, I see a podiatrist every few months. I'm about to get orthotics fitted. While they won't alter the alignment of my feet long term, I'm assured they'll help them rest in the correct position while I'm wearing them, so shoes don't rub and callouses and hard skin form less quickly. Using Margaret Dabbs' excellent foot file several times a week and a really good foot cream daily keeps things under control between visits. (Kure Bazaar's is pricy but lasts ages).
Orthotics aren't cheap either but sometimes you can get them on private insurance. Either way they have to be worth it. Foot health is vital to overall health and wellbeing. There's a section of rigorous foot exercises on the Pilatesology app which help strengthen feet and lift arches. Pilatesology is a paid-for app that, despite being a Pilates disciple for 30 years, I've only recently discovered. It has a huge library of classes for all levels, from mat to machines. It's brilliant. If that all sounds a bit much, rolling a simple spiky ball or foot roller under your arches can feel amazingly good.
Meanwhile, I'm wearing my sheepskin-lined Fitflops (good in hot wear, no rubbing) from last year that look and feel like a bed. Surprisingly, I've had a lot of compliments on them and my feet have never been happier. Birkenstock do something similar.
They're not the most elegant footwear, but a good manicure makes a world of difference. Like Annabel, I love natural, buffed, clean looking toenails, but my sensible, low-glam footwear tipped me over into a glossy orange red pedi the other day, and I must say, it's very cheering.
I don't bother with gel on my toes – too much of a faff getting it removed. The exception is if I'm going on holiday and planning on scrambling over rocks, an admittedly niche activity which chips varnish in a nano second.
A few drops of cuticle/almond oil whenever you remember, keeps things looking glossy and healthy.

Jelena Dokic reflects on her 'amazing' year as she jets off on European vacation... after 'hard launching' relationship with Yane Veselinov
Jelena Dokic has reflected on what she says has been an 'amazing' year as she prepares to jet off on a European getaway. The former tennis champion, 42, recently 'hard launched' her new relationship with partner Yane Veselinov. Taking to Instagram on Thursday, the commentator revealed that she was taking some much-needed downtime. Jelena shared a photo that showed her beaming as she relaxed on a Qatar Airways business class flight. Already fresh-faced and relaxed, Jelena showed little sign of being in desperate need of a break. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'An amazing 12 months,' Jelena gushed in the caption. 'Couldn't have asked for more. 'So busy, so happy, and so grateful for it all. Time to take a couple of weeks off and recharge. Europe, see you soon.' She accompanied the sentiment with the hashtags: #timetorecharge, #recharge, #randr, and #europe. The post was met with an outpouring of support for Jelena with the likes of comedian Joel Creasey offering: 'Love Queen Jelena'. Others were quick to wish Jelena a hearty bon voyage. 'I couldn't be more happy for you Jelena,' one fan gushed. 'More deserving than anyone I know.' Another chimed in with: 'Have fun lovely. Well deserved. Hope your man is joining you, so you can show him our beautiful Country/Croatia.' Jelena's sunny post comes after she went 'Instagram official' with her new boyfriend Yane earlier this month. Commenting on a loved-up photo of the pair, Jelena wrote: 'You are my calm, safe, peaceful and happy place. So glad I found you.' It follows the couple being seen cuddling at Melbourne Airport in May. Late last year, Jelena revealed she had been 'closed off' to finding love ever since she split from her long-time Brazilian boyfriend, Tin Bikic. The couple were together for almost 19 years before announcing they had ended their relationship in 2021. Aside from her new romance, it certainly has been an active 12 months for Jelena, with the star having been kept busy with her tennis commentary duties for Channel Nine. Jelena has also revealed a remarkable weight-loss journey that has seen her shed an incredible 20 kilograms. Taking to Instagram in June, Jelena shared a post comparing her current appearance with how she looked back in 2023, when she was 20 kg heavier. In the caption, she stressed that she was happy in both pictures, adding that weight loss was not the goal but simply a 'by-product' of adopting healthier habits. 'This is about HEALTH and not SIZE,' she continued. 'So many questions about me getting healthier, which has seen me lose weight. Weight loss was not a priority; it's just a by-product of looking after my health.' Addressing those who accused her of crash-dieting, Jelena went on to clarify: 'I didn't lose weight quickly. I lost 20 kilos in just under 10 months. Nothing fast.' She explained she had lost the weight because of 'a family history of diabetes' and the fact she had recently been diagnosed with high blood pressure. Jelena has also been busy on the promotional trail promoting the screen adaptation of her 2017 tell-all autobiography Unbreakable: The Jelena Dokic Story. Her amazing year has not come without difficulty, however, with her father, Demir, passing away in May, aged 67. She suffered horrendous abuse at the hands of her father, who was also her tennis coach early on in her career. 'As you know, my relationship with my father has been difficult and painful, with a lot of history,' she posted on Instagram. 'Despite everything and no matter how hard, difficult and in the last 10 years even non-existent our relationship and communication was, it is never easy losing a parent and a father even one you are estranged from. 'The loss of an estranged parent comes with a difficult and complicated grief.' Jelena admitted she had conflicting and complex emotions as she shared a childhood photo of her as a little girl cuddling up to her dad, who she had not spoken to in 10 years. 'For the end of this chapter, I choose to focus on a good memory like this picture,' she continued.

Tess Daly, 56, reveals she still fits into the same size jeans she wore in her 20s despite NEVER having dieted
Tess Daly has revealed she still fits into the same size jeans she wore in her 20s - but insisted she's never been one to diet. The TV presenter, 56, said she exercises daily to maintain her core strength and shared insights into her healthy lifestyle in a recent interview with The Mirror. She told the publication: 'I'm wearing the same size jeans I was wearing in my 20's, but that's not from dieting - it's from maintaining. She continued: 'I've never dieted, and as a mother of daughters, I've always been very careful not to demonise sugar and not count calories, and I refuse to embrace any negative connotation around food because I think moderation is key.' Tess shares daughters Phoebe, 20, and Amber, 16, with Radio 2 DJ husband Vernon Kay, 51. Posing in pieces from her own NAIA Beach swimwear range, she said she believes she's cracked the formula to both feeling and looking great. She said: 'I will do planks in my living room every day because core strength is really important to me at my age now, plus I'm also very tall and do a lot of running around in heels, so I need to support my back.' The star added that although she's now in her 50s, she feels as energetic as she did in her 20s. The interview comes after Tess looked as glamorous as ever during a recent trip to New York City with her lookalike daughters earlier this month. The presenter treated her youngest daughter, Amber, to a post-GCSE holiday. The girls took in the sights, including a visit to the Brooklyn Bridge, watching a Yankees baseball game and a trip to Tess' old apartment. Tess put on a stylish display in a white puff sleeve blouse and mini skirt as she joined Phoebe for a photo in front of the famous bridge. The Strictly Come Dancing host then posed for a photo in front of her old home on Great Jones Street, where she lived from 1995 until 2000. She captioned the post: 'First time back in NYC since becoming a mum (20 years) a fab VERY hot long weekend, post GCSE trip showing the girls where I used to live.' Last month, Tess shared a heartfelt message on receiving her MBE as she thanked some of the biggest stars in showbusiness for her success. The TV presenter was awarded the honour for Services to Broadcasting in King Charles ' birthday honours list alongside fellow TV star Claudia Winkleman. The King and the Queen are dedicated watchers of Strictly Come Dancing, which is presented by the pair. They have been part of the Strictly team since its launch in 2004, with Tess presenting the main show with Sir Bruce Forsyth and Claudia, 53, hosting the BBC2 spin-off It Takes Two. After impressing BBC bosses, Claudia was promoted to hosting the Sunday results show alongside Tess before becoming the main co-host in 2014 following the departure of Sir Bruce when he reduced his workload. And now, after being acknowledged for her efforts, Tess shared an album of pictures alongside some famous faces who have worked alongside her. Alongside the album, she penned: ' Genuinely still pinching myself… Feeling extremely humbled and very honoured to be awarded an MBE for Services to Broadcasting in King Charles' birthday honours list. 'If I could, I would dedicate it to all the wonderful people I have had the pleasure of working with over the past 26 years.' Tess continued: 'What an utter privilege it has been to work with so many legends of broadcasting and Knights of the Realm including Sir Trevor Macdonald and Sir Terry Wogan - and also to the Strictly viewers who have brought us so much joy over the past 20 years-thank you to every one of you for being there for the ride; it means the world having you there ✨ 'From Back in 2004 when it all began with the wonderful Sir Bruce Forsythe til now - 21 years later. Huge congrats to my brilliant girl @claudiawinkle on receiving her award too - who would've thought we'd be celebrating this together 20 years after we first met? 'Thank you so much for your lovely messages. Not sure I'll ever be able to take this in! Xx' Last year, the Queen described herself as 'one of Strictly's greatest fans' and told Strictly professional dancer Johannes Radebe, 'we all watch it'. Tess's husband, the BBC radio presenter Vernon Kay, has previously talked of the 'real friendship' that has formed between his wife and Her Majesty, with the Queen even keen to know what goes on behind-the-scenes. Vernon said: 'Camilla and Tess have a real friendship through it now. They don't text, but we have mutual friends and messages come through. 'When they see each other, the Queen is always asking: 'Who is your favourite?' She wants to know the backstage gossip. 'It's crazy to think of the King and Queen sat on the sofa with a brew watching your wife present Strictly.' Both Tess and Claudia engage in charity work, including Daly, who is a proud supporter of the King's Trust and patron of Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital, and Winkleman, who is a patron of Child Bereavement UK and Roald Dahl's Marvellous Children's Charity.
