Owaisi slams ‘pants check' of dhaba owners on Kanwar route; SP calls religious profiling a form of 'terrorism'

New Indian Express16 hours ago
All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi and former Samajwadi Party MP S T Hasan on Wednesday strongly condemned the alleged religious profiling of dhaba and eatery owners along the Kanwar Yatra route in parts of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
Owaisi reacted sharply to media reports suggesting that vigilante groups allegedly asked some dhaba owners on the Delhi-Dehradun highway to open their pants to verify their religion.
"There are several hotels near Muzaffarnagar highway that have been running for years. I fail to understand how there were no issues in these places 10 years ago. How was the Kanwar Yatra conducted peacefully here earlier? Why is all this happening now?" Owaisi asked.
"Who are these vigilante groups asking hotel owners to open their pants? Are they running the government, or is the administration in charge? Police should arrest them," he said.

Ahead of Muharram and Kanwar Yatra, security has been heightened and CCTVs installed in Moradabad. SP City, Ranvijay Singh, said that arrangements had been made for both occasions using technology. The Kanwar Yatra will start from July 11, and the Moradabad police aim was to make it successful.(Representational) SP City, Ranvijay Singh said, "We have made all the arrangements for the Muharram and Kanwar Yatra. All the homework has been done. All the peace committee meetings have been held in all police stations. We have held a meeting with all the stakeholders. Internal departmental coordination has also been done. We have accessed the route for Tazia, and the problems have been addressed. We want the Muharram procession to be successful. He further said that the Kanwar Yatra will start from July 11 and the aim was to make it successful. "There are two important routes in Moradabad. We have made all the preparations for these two routes. The devotees come from Haridwar and Garhmukteshwar. We have had a meeting with NHAI. We have done meeting with the leaders of both the camps. We are using technology in this regard. CCTVs have been installed in the routes of 'Tajia' and Kanwar Yatra," the SP said. He further said that dark spots have been identified, and the arrangements are being done in consultation with the concerned authorities. "We will also use drones. Drones are very helpful. We will use drones to facilitate the movement of the Kanwar Yatris, especially the three days, including Monday. The Muharram procession is on July 6, and we will use technology so that no one creates any problems. If there will be any non-compliance, then we will take strict action. If anyone posts outrageous messages on social media, then tough action will be taken. All the arrangements have been done using technology to conduct both the festivals successfully," he added. In the Kanwar Yatra procession, Kanwariyas collect water from a river and carry it hundreds of kilometres to offer it to the shrines of Lord Shiva. According to Hindu beliefs, Parshuram, a devotee of Shiva and Lord Vishnu's avatar, participated in the initial procession. Devotees across the country perform worship, fasting and pilgrimage dedicated to the Lord Shiva. (ANI)

Parsi, Bohri and even Patel can become Mayor of Mumbai, says SP MLA Rais Shaikh

MUMBAI: A day after BJP legislator Ameet Satam made a provocative statement suggesting that a Khan might become the Mayor of Mumbai, Samajwadi Party (SP) legislator Rais Shaikh stated that Mumbai belongs to people of all castes and religions. He emphasized that Parsis, Bohris, Memons, Patels, Agris, Kolis, and Muslims have all previously served as mayors of the city. "Even if a Khan becomes the mayor tomorrow, he will contribute to the development of Mumbai," said MLA Rais Shaikh during his speech in the Assembly. 'No one owns Mumbai. People from all castes and religions have contributed to its growth. If we look at the list of mayors since 1931, we find names like J. B. Boman, H. M. Rahimtullah, Y. J. Mehar Ali, S. P. Sabawala, E. A. Bandukwala, A. U. Memon, and S. K. Patil,' said Shaikh. "The claim of changing the 'color' of Mumbai is completely baseless." Shaikh also raised the issue of traffic congestion in Bhiwandi. 'The government is aiming to make Maharashtra a one-trillion-dollar economy and to develop Bhiwandi into a logistics hub. But when will the traffic issues here be resolved?' MLA Shaikh asked. 'The redevelopment of buildings in Bhiwandi is not progressing. As a result, unauthorized constructions are increasing, and the number of dangerous buildings is rising,' said Shaikh. Satam had on Tuesday said in the Legislative Assembly that a conspiracy is underway to polarize the city for vote-bank politics. Satam said in the days to come, 'some Khan will become the Mayor of Mumbai, adding that attempts are being made to polarize and divide Mumbai. While efforts have been made to modernize and secure the city through infrastructure projects under CM Devendra Fadnavis, there are also attempts by certain elements to change the colour of Mumbai, Satam had said.

Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi slams religious profiling of dhaba owners on Kanwar Yatra Route

Asaduddin Owaisi (File photo) HYDERABAD: AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi on Wednesday strongly condemned reports of some dhaba owners on Delhi-Dehradun highway being asked to "open their pants" to verify their religion in connection with the Kanwar Yatra. "Why are such incidents happening now? There were no issues on the route 10 years ago. Many hotels near Muzaffarnagar highway ran peacefully for years. Who are these vigilantes to ask anyone to remove their pants for identification of religion? Are they running a superior govt? They are acting as if they are above the law. The police must arrest those responsible. Why is the state govt not taking action against them? Neither the state govt nor the vigilantes are following the Supreme Court orders," he said. The SC, on July 22 last year, issued an interim order putting on hold guidelines that asked shopkeepers in Uttar Pradesh along Kanwar Yatra routes to display their names.
