Wriggling Cargo: Mumbai Customs Seize 16 Snakes From Passenger Returning From Thailand
Indian customs officers in Mumbai said they have stopped a plane passenger arriving from Thailand with a wriggling cargo of live snakes, the third such seizure this month.
"Customs officers... foiled yet another wildlife smuggling attempt, 16 live snakes... seized from passenger returning from Thailand," said customs officers in the airport in the Indian financial hub.
The passenger, who arrived on Sunday, has been arrested, the customs agency said in a statement, with "further investigation underway".
The live snakes included reptiles often sold in the pet trade, and were largely non-venomous, or with venom too weak to affect people.
They included garter snakes, a rhino rat snake and a Kenyan sand boa, among others.
In early June, customs officers stopped a passenger smuggling dozens of venomous vipers, also arriving from Thailand.
Days later, officers stopped another traveller carrying 100 creatures including lizards, sunbirds and tree-climbing possums.
Wildlife trade monitor TRAFFIC, which battles the smuggling of wild animals and plants, has warned of a "very troubling" trend in trafficking driven by the exotic pet trade.
More than 7,000 animals, dead and alive, have been seized along the Thailand-India air route in the last 3.5 years, it said.

He has been additionally charged with causing actual bodily harm in connection with a separate victim in London earlier. "A post-mortem examination has been conducted and a provisional cause of Nila's death has been given as a head injury," Leicestershire Police said. The force also shared a statement on Tuesday issued by Patel's son Jaidan and daughter Danika in tribute to their "kind-hearted and devoted" mother, who was a "loyal friend, and an incredibly hard worker". "We are heartbroken, but we want the world to know who our mum truly was - a beautiful, vibrant soul who deserved so much more," reads the statement. "Her love was quiet but powerful - shown through warm meals, thoughtful words, and a smile that could light up any room. She always put others before herself, offering comfort without ever asking for anything in return. Even when life was hard, she carried on with strength, dignity and a smile on her face," they said. Jaiden and Danika said she raised them with patience, love, and unwavering support, and that their greatest wish was always to make her proud. Their statement adds: "Mum's life was full of love, and the stories we've heard from those who knew her have reminded us of just how deeply she touched the lives around her. She was truly rich in love and generosity. "We will miss her more than words can ever express. We didn't get the chance to say goodbye, and that pain is something we carry every day. Bangladeshi Smugglers Attack BSF Team In Bengal, 1 Killed As Force Opens Fire
A group of smugglers from Bangladesh attacked Border Security Force personnel who were trying to stop them, resulting in the death of a smuggler in West Bengal's Nadia district on Wednesday. Based on intelligence inputs, the BSF laid an ambush to intercept a gold smuggling attempt near the border outpost of Halderpara. A statement from the border force said four to five smugglers were seen crossing the river from the Bangladesh side and entering Indian territory around 12.10 pm. The team warned the smugglers to stop, but they continued advancing. A member of the team then fired a round in the air, but the smugglers kept moving closer, encircled a BSF personnel and attacked him with sharp-edged weapons. Another member of the team fired a round to protect his colleague, which hit one of the smugglers in the lower abdomen, and he dropped unconscious. The remaining smugglers then escaped back across the border into Bangladesh, and a cutter and four sharp-edged weapons were recovered from the spot. The injured smuggler was taken to the Krishnaganj hospital nearby, where he was declared dead. The BSF jawan who was attacked is undergoing treatment at the same hospital. A first information report (FIR) has been registered at the local police station and the smuggler's body has also been handed over to the police.

Cricketer Mohammad Shami to pay 4 lakhs monthly alimony as maintenance to Hasin Jahan
Kolkata (West Bengal) [India] July 2 (ANI): On Calcutta High Court's judgement in cricketer Mohammad Shami and estranged wife Hasin Jahan's divorce case, Jahan's advocate Imtiaz Ahmed confirmed on Wednesday Shami will pay a monthly alimony of Rs 4 lakh as maintenance to Jahan and said there is a high chance the maintenance might be upgraded to Rs 6 lakh. Calcutta High Court directed Indian pacer Mohammed Shami to pay his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, and daughter a monthly alimony of Rs 4 lakh as maintenance. Jahan will have to be paid Rs 1.50 lakh per month, while the daughter will get Rs 2.50 lakh per month. Jahan, a former model, married Mohammed Shami in 2014. The couple had a daughter in 2015. Shami and Hasin Jahan separated in 2018 after she accused him of domestic violence and adultery. They have been in the midst of a divorce case since then, with ongoing legal battles regarding alimony and other matters. While speaking to ANI, Imtiaz Ahmed said, 'It was the best moment for Hasin Jahan. From 2018 to 2024, she had been running from pillar to post. Ultimately, it was pronounced in open court yesterday that Rs 1.5 lakh would be provided for Hasin Jahan, Rs 2.5 lakh for the daughter (both to be paid monthly), and that any time the daughter requires assistance, it would be provided by Md Shami. The High Court has directed the trial court to dispose of the main application of the interim order within six months. There is a high chance that when they return to the trial court to conclude the hearing on maintenance, it might be upgraded to Rs 6 lakh because the claim of Hasin Jahan in her maintenance application was for Rs 7 lakh and Rs 3 lakh.' Earlier, in 2018, Hasin Jahan had accused the cricketer of domestic violence. She had filed a petition in the Alipore court, accusing Shami and his family of harassing her. Jahan had demanded Rs 7 lakh per month from the pacer to maintain the family. The court accepted her plea and allocated Rs 80,000 for her daughter. (ANI)
