Bengal, Odisha Failed To Act Against NRI Quota Admissions Scam: Probe Agency
The Enforcement Directorate Monday said authorities in West Bengal and Odisha did not take any action against admission of ineligible candidates in certain private medical colleges under the NRI quota despite the MEA providing "categorical" information of "forgery".
The federal probe agency said it has seized "incriminating" evidence during searches in this case in the past.
A fixed deposit worth Rs 6.42 crore of a private college in West Bengal has been provisionally attached, the ED said. It had earlier attached assets worth Rs 12.33 crore of some colleges and individuals involved in these alleged irregularities.
Probe has found that the managements of certain private colleges -- offering MBBS, MD and MS courses -- in these states colluded with agents to create "fake" papers for candidates, such as embassy documents of NRIs and family tree, the ED said.
"These private medical colleges were paying agents to prepare fake documents. The agents approached and obtained credentials of unrelated NRIs by paying money and used these to prepare fake documents and projected these NRIs as sponsors for students." "In some cases, the agents and medical colleges used the same set of NRI sponsor documents for two to three different and unrelated candidates," the agency said.
It claimed that this has been done to show compliance with guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court in this matter. The ED said "huge commissions" were being paid for this illegal act.
"Despite categorical information of forgery in cases of certain NRI sponsors provided by the Ministry of External Affairs, no action has been taken by concerned state authorities," the probe agency said.
Various Indian consulates/embassies in foreign countries have informed that NRI certificates of sponsor in many cases, which were used to secure admissions in these private medical colleges under the NRI quota, are "not genuine", it added.

Christian groups protest MLA Padalkar's comments on religious leaders

Terror Groups Using E-Commerce And Online Payments For Financing: FATF
The FATF noted e-commerce and online payments funding terror, citing Pulwama and Gorakhnath Temple incidents, and flagged state-sponsored terrorism and online material procurement. The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has highlighted the use of e-commerce platforms and online payment services to finance terror activities. In the recent statement, the global terror financing watchdog flagged the exploitation of these services while attributing to the February 2019 Pulwama terror attack and 2022 Gorakhnath Temple incident. 'Delegations reported on this trend by referring to the use of state sponsorship for TF (terror financing) either as fundraising technique or as part of the financial management strategy of the certain organisations engaging in terrorist acts. Several forms of support have been reported, including direct financial support, logistical and material support, or the provision of training," said the official statement from the FATF. The FATF report highlighted that the terrorists have been abusing e-commerce platforms and online marketplaces and said terrorists have used such platforms for their operational procurement (equipment, weapons, chemicals, 3D-printing material). Watchdog's report, Comprehensive Update on Terrorist Financing Risks, flagged the flagged state sponsorship of terrorism, stating that 'certain terrorist organisations have been and continue to receive financial and other forms of support from several national governments." After the Pahalgam terror attack that happened in April 2025, FATF had said it would come out with a 'comprehensive analysis of terrorist financing", compiling cases provided by its global network consisting 200 jurisdictions. The body also said that such attacks cannot be executed without financial support. In its report, FATF used terror attacks in India for case study and stated that the online platforms are used to procure materials that help in execution of such attacks. It further said that a key component of the improvised explosive device used in the attack — aluminum powder — was procured through the EPOM Amazon. In February 2019, a suicide bombing targeted a convoy of Indian Security forces in Pulwama in Jammu & Kashmir, resulting in the deaths of 40 soldiers. Indian Nurse Nimisha Priya, On Death Row In Yemen, To Be Executed On July 16
Nimisha Priya, the Indian nurse who is on death row after being convicted for the murder of a Yemeni national, will be executed next week on July 16. Last year, the President of Yemen approved the death sentence of Nimisha Priya, who is from Kerala. Sources in the Ministry of External Affairs told NDTV that they have been closely following the matter since then and have been in regular touch with local authorities and her family members, and have rendered all possible assistance. The sources said the ministry is closely following the matter. All About The Nimisha Priya Case Nimisha Priya moved to Yemen in 2008 to support her parents. After working in several hospitals, she eventually opened her clinic and came in contact with Talal Abdo Mahdi in 2014 for the same, as rules in Yemen mandate partnering with a local to start a business. The nurse from Kerala had a fallout with Mahdi and she filed a complaint against him after which he was arrested in 2016 but he was later released from jail and allegedly continued to threaten her. Nimisha's family claimed that she had allegedly injected Mahdi with sedatives to retrieve her confiscated passport. However, an overdose led to his death. She was arrested while attempting to flee the country and was convicted of murder in 2018. The trial court convicted her of killing the Yemeni national, a decision that was upheld by the country's Supreme Judicial Council in November 2023. Yemeni law imposes a death penalty for a range of offences, including "violating the independence, unity or territorial integrity of the Republic," undertaking "an act, to weaken the armed forces," murder, drug trafficking, adultery, consensual same-sex sexual activity between adults, turning back from or denouncing Islam, and facilitating prostitution. 'Blood Money' To Save Nimisha Priya Though an option of 'Blood Money', also known as compensation for the victim's family, was open, the amount is always decided by the family. Priya's mother, who works as a house help in Kochi, sold her house to fight the case, said lawyer Subhash Chandran, who is part of the forum comprising politicians, businessmen, activists, and expatriates seeking justice for Nimisha. Talks to negotiate the blood money with the victim's family had come to an abrupt halt in September 2024 after Abdullah Ameer, the lawyer appointed by the Indian Embassy, demanded a pre-negotiation fee of $20,000 (approximately Rs 16.6 lakh), according to a report by Manorama online. MEA provided $19,871 to Ameer in July last year, but he insisted on a total fee of $40,000, payable in two instalments, before he would resume talks. The Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council succeeded in raising the first instalment of Ameer's fee through crowdfunding. However, later they reportedly faced challenges in ensuring transparency to donors about how the funds were being used. The Centre in January had said that it is closely tracking the case and extending every possible help to the family; however, her mother warned that "time is running out and pleaded for help." "I am deeply grateful to the Indian and Kerala governments, as well as the committee formed to save her, for all the support provided so far. But this is my final plea -- please help us save her life. Time is running out," she said.
