Punjab: 9th Guru's martyrdom: DSGMC calls for joint commemoration with SGPC
In a letter addressed to SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami, DSGMC president Harmeet Singh Kalka said the commemoration functions should be held jointly, reflecting the spirit of Panthic unity and honouring Guru Teg Bahadur's supreme sacrifice.
'Guru Teg Bahadur was martyred in Delhi for protection and religious freedom of Hindu religion. There are reports of separate events being planned by the DSGMC and the SGPC. Such a fragmented approach is not befitting the legacy of Guru Sahib,' Kalka stated in his letter.
He reminded the SGPC of the past collective efforts that united the Sikh community — the 300th anniversary of Khalsa Foundation Day at Takht Keshgarh Sahib (Anandpur Sahib) in 1999, the 400th birth anniversary of Guru Angad Dev, the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev in 2019 at Sultanpur Lodhi and the tercentenary of the installation of Guru Granth Sahib at Takht Hazur Sahib, Nanded, in 2008.
Kalka also requested that the commemoration include remembrance of Bhai Mati Das, Bhai Sati Das and Bhai Dyala Ji, who were martyred alongside Guru Tegh Bahadur.

Amritsar: Gobind Singh Longowal —a three-time president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), a minister in the Parkash Singh Badal-led SAD govt in 1997, and a four-time MLA — is hopeful of unity among Akalis when the rebel group, of which he is a part, elects a new president on Aug 11. Talking about the upcoming session of the rebels on Aug 11, he said they will elect the new president, and the five-member committee leading the reorganisation had extended an invitation to SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal to attend the session. "We have always been votaries of unity. Even the Akal Takht has called for panthic unity. That is our guiding principle," said Longowal. Asked about SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami and former SGPC president Kirpal Singh Badungar backing out of the seven-member committee formed by the Akal Takht on Dec 2, 2024, and reducing it to five members, Longowal said they had only bowed before the directions of the Akal Takht. "We will continue to follow the Sikh clergy's decision," he said. Longowal did not rule out the possibility of a truce between Sukhbir Singh Badal-led SAD and the rebel faction, stating that unity was in the best interest of the panth. Amritsar: The Akal Takht has issued fresh summons to Punjab cabinet minister Harjot Singh Bains, directing him to appear before the Sikh clergy on Aug 6 in connection with a controversial event held in Srinagar that allegedly hurt Sikh sentiments. It will be chaired by Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, the officiating jathedar of the Akal Takht, and focus on various Panthic issues and religious matters. Bains has been summoned for organising a programme in Srinagar related to the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur, which sparked controversy and hurt Sikh sentiments, said Bagicha adding that Bains has been officially informed via email. He further said that Jaswant Singh, director of the language department, Punjab, who was also associated with the event, is currently abroad attending a relative's wedding and is expected to return by Aug 12. Accordingly, he will be summoned to appear before the clergy at a later date. Earlier, both were summoned on Aug 1, but due to the death of the brother-in-law of Giani Gargaj, the meeting was postponed.
