Jayson Tatum gives first update on Achilles tear rehab
Jayson Tatum has a grueling road ahead after undergoing surgery for an Achilles tear last month. However, the Celtics star gave a brief optimistic update on his recovery in a post on X Saturday.
'Day 25…days starting to get a little easier,' Tatum wrote in a X post.

Tatum underwent surgery for his right Achilles tear on May 13 after suffering the injury in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the Knicks. His only other public comment since the injury has been an Instagram post on May 14 thanking everyone for their support following the injury.
Tatum underwent surgery on his torn Achilles less than 24 hours after suffering the Achilles tear. However, the fast turnaround with the surgery may end up proving to be beneficial according to Brad Stevens.
'Super hard for Jayson, more than anybody,' Stevens said last month about the aftermath of the injury. 'As has been well documented, he loves to play, and I think even missing two games has been grueling for him. So we know that there is a long road ahead and that there's going to be several steps that he'll have to take before he ultimately gets back out on the court, but the positive was we were 15 minutes away from Dr. O'Malley, who is a terrific surgeon, who has done a number of these.
'[Team doctor] Dr. Schena was on the phone with him before we left the building on Monday night, and he was out of the MRI and consultation and done with surgery by the time we had an injury report the next day, because there was real benefit to doing it early. So as tough as that injury is and as tough as that was that night, just an amazing set of circumstances, and an amazing thank you from our organization to Dr. O'Malley, the nurses at HSS and everybody there, the hotel that we were staying in and the accommodations they made Jayson feel comfortable in. I thought it was about as good of a transition in about as bleak of a feeling as you could have.'

In a follow up interview with Chris Forsberg of NBC Sports Boston last month, Stevens elaborated on the potential impact of Tatum's quick surgery on his recovery.
'Blood supply and different swelling benefits early on in those first 72 hours was the timeframe we were talking about,' Stevens said. 'We were fortunate to be there at HSS. I thought they did a great job. Our team doc did a great job of helping organize it. We were there with Brandy and Jayson and Jeff Wexler, his agent and everyone was quick to make that call. I think there's real benefit to that.'
The Celtics have not commented on a timetable for Tatum's recovery but Tatum's father indicated to Marc Spears of ESPN that the Celtics All-Star expects to return in 8-9 months. Players who have returned from an Achilles tear in the NBA in the past year have need anywhere from 8-18 months for their recovery before returning to the floor.
The Celtics will try to retool their roster around Tatum this summer in the aftermath of a disappointing second round exit this past season.

'I mean, I think anytime you're talking about an injury like that,' Stevens said. 'It's another piece of information that you have to ingest and figure out how that affects you moving forward for next year and into the future.'

Advertisement It's a pitch Díaz has toyed with while playing catch but hadn't developed enough confidence in to use during a game. His verdict? The pitch still needs work. Díaz's changeup (he threw only one) registered 95 mph — essentially not much different than his fastball. Ideally, Díaz would throw his changeup in the low 90s. 'I wanted to see how it would look in a game,' Díaz said Saturday before the Mets' 9-2 loss to the Pirates at PNC Park in which the Mets players called a team meeting after the ugly defeat. 'It didn't look good, because I threw it 100 percent. When I throw it playing catch, I throw it maybe 60 percent so the movement is way better. He's utilized his slider on 48 percent of occasions, with the one changeup mixed in. Why add the changeup? 'It will make [hitters] think more,' Díaz said. 'But I have got to make sure I have a good changeup. If I don't feel it's good enough, I will stick with my other two pitches.' Advertisement It's hard to argue against what has worked to this point for the right-hander, who entered Saturday with a 1.99 ERA in 32 appearances for the Mets this season. He was also 16-for-17 in save opportunities. Díaz's big first half has positioned him as a possibility to represent the team in the All-Star Game. His lone selection for the Mets came in 2022 — but he didn't appear in the game. But he's been a different pitcher over the past two months — entering Saturday he had allowed only one earned run over his previous 20 appearances for a 0.41 ERA. 'My first month wasn't that good, but after that, I started feeling better,' Díaz said. 'I am commanding my spots really good. I walked too many people in that first month and I think that was the main thing, throwing strikes.' The elite tight end prospect was warming up and went through the majority of position drills when he pulled his hamstring and was unable to work out the rest of the day. Prothro was visibly disappointed but his physical development, which was the biggest question mark surrounding his ranking, was obvious. He weighed in at 216 pounds and, despite the pulled hamstring, even participated in the bench press competition where he recorded nine reps of 225 pounds. Georgia is trending in Prothro's recruitment but Auburn and a handful of other teams are in pursuit. The caliber of defender Georgia commit Lincoln Keyes faced at Five-Star was new to him and it was good for the national analyst team to evaluate him under these conditions. The Michigan native is a very impressive prospect with great hands and the ability to make tough catches over the middle and down the field. He'll be a very reliable target for Georgia quarterbacks when he gets on the field in Athens but that could take some time. Keyes has a well-rounded game but he could find it difficult to consistently create separation from defenders when he reaches the next level. That being said, the style Keyes plays with would complement Prothro's skillset beautifully, if both do end up signing with Georgia. The two highly ranked tight ends were frequently seen chatting and playing catch during the down time on Tuesday. That relationship appears to be fairly strong and could pay dividends for the Dawgs down the road. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH GEORGIA FANS AT Holden Niemi was a late addition to the Rivals Five-Star roster and took advantage of the opportunity to make a strong impression. The 2027 prospect out of Illinois is fairly well-developed from a physical perspective and showed strong athletic traits throughout the workout on Tuesday. Adjusting to the variety of quarterbacks seemed to be a bit challenging for him at times, which resulted in passes falling incomplete. Niemi is only heading into his junior season so there is plenty of time for him to make adjustments to his game before he reaches the next level. He is, however, on the smaller side when it comes to the trends that have emerged in the NFL Draft for tight ends so keeping an eye on his physical growth will be a focus going forward. Tennessee tight end commit Carson Sneed posted impressive measurements during registration on Monday and he had plenty of bright spots on the field Tuesday. At 6-foot-6, 246 pounds, Sneed is fairly lean but plays with a great deal of strength, which showed when linebackers and defensive backs bounced off of him as they tried to disrupt his routes. He isn't the most natural receiver but there is plenty of potential to get excited about, which is surely part of the reason why Florida, North Carolina and others are trying to pry him away from the Volunteers. The Boston Celtics have had a busy 48 hours, first trading Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers and then Kristaps Porzingis to the Atlanta Hawks. The moves were a clear effort from the team's front office to get under the dreaded second apron, and signal that the Celtics may be willing to view 2025-26 as more of a transitional year as Jayson Tatum recovers from his torn Achilles. Advertisement The Celtics still have some big decisions ahead of them, with multiple players on their roster set to hit free agency, including big man Al Horford. Recently, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania stopped by The Pat McAfee show and revealed what the market is looking like for the 39 year-old. 'There's an uncertainty around Boston right now with Jayson Tatum potentially missing all of next season.. I am told Al Horford has a pretty robust free agent market outside of Boston,' said Charania. While he may not be the same player that he was a decade ago, Al Horford remains a valuable tool for the modern NBA, able to shoot the three-ball and guard the perimeter reasonably well for a big man. Advertisement After trading Porzingis, the Celtics will be looking for additional depth in their frontcourt heading into next season. It's worth noting that backup center Luke Kornet also will be hitting free agency in a week. Boston is unlikely to drop off of a cliff in 2025-26 as long as Jaylen Brown and Derrick White (as well as talented new trade acquisition Anfernee Simons) are on the roster, but their chances of competing for an NBA championship given Tatum's injury and their recent trades would appear to be slim. Advertisement With that being the case, it will be interesting to see how Brad Stevens and the rest of the Celtics' front office navigate the remainder of the offseason.
