NTSB finds illegal exit ramp parking contributed to deadly crash
The NTSB voted on Tuesday to approve the findings and recommendations related to the crash that occurred in Highland, Illinois, in 2023, in which a Greyhound bus careened into three tractor trailers parked illegally on the shoulder of an exit ramp outside the Silver Lake rest area late at night.
The bus driver's fatigue was found to be the probable cause of the crash, in which three bus passengers were killed and seven seriously injured. The truck drivers were uninjured.
'Also contributing to the crash were the three combination vehicles parked on the shoulder of the exit ramp – prohibited by Illinois statute – due to the recurring lack of available truck parking,' NTSB affirmed.
'The NTSB doesn't usually weigh in on the need for congressional funding for specific programs, so I do think this is a big deal and I do think it is much-needed,' NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said at the meeting, pointing out that legislation pending in Congress would set aside funding specifically for constructing more truck parking nationwide.
Among 21 findings in the investigation, six related to issues involving a lack of truck parking, which was ranked by the American Transportation Research Institute as a top issue among truck drivers.
'Combination vehicles routinely parked on the shoulder of the exit ramp to the Silver Lake rest area due to recurring lack of available truck parking, which increases the risk of them being struck by an errant highway vehicle,' NTSB found.
'The limited truck parking capacity and subsequent unsafe parking observed at the Silver Lake Rest area were consistent with a lack of access to long term parking spaces for combination vehicles on the National Highway System.
'Individual states are limited in what they can do, and a centralized effort can more broadly address the safety risk caused by lack of available truck parking throughout the country.'
Recommendations approved by NTSB staff at the meeting directed at DOT included expanding efforts to use the department's Truck Parking Information Management System to identify rest areas around the country in critical need of additional parking.
NTSB also recommended that DOT 'pursue available options to increase commercial vehicle parking capacity on highways, such as establishing a grant program for states, local governments, and other eligible entities' and to evaluate 'the benefits of ending restrictions on private development of rest areas, and seeking additional congressional appropriations as necessary.'

Federal investigators eye driver fatigue in deadly 18 wheeler crash on I-20 tied to Florida-based carrier
Federal investigators are examining the role driver fatigue may have played in a deadly I-20 crash near Terrell over the weekend involving a Florida-based truck driver and his employer, Hope Trans LLC. The National Transportation Safety Board, in coordination with the Texas Department of Public Safety, has opened a safety investigation into the crash that killed five people on Interstate 20 in Terrell, Texas. The driver, identified as Alexis Osmani Gonzalez-Companioni, 27, is from Florida and works for Hope Trans LLC, a trucking company with a listed address in the Orlando area, according to USDOT records. Records show the company had a previously listed address of Tacoma, Washington. Federal transportation records show Hope Trans LLC has been in operation since 2021. The company currently operates 65 trucks and employs 80 drivers. It is listed as being in compliance with federal safety regulations. In the past 24 months, Hope Trans LLC has been involved in three crashes resulting in injuries, though none were fatal until this weekend's incident. In terms of driver compliance, based on federal inspection in the past 24 months, the company's record is slightly better than the national average. Five percent of Hope Trans LLC drivers were found "out of service" during a federal inspection, compared to the national average of 6.7%. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration website shows no "acute/critical" violations for hours-of-service compliance or driver fitness. Federal rules limit commercial truck drivers to a 12-hour driving limit after 8 consecutive hours off-duty, as well as a 70-hour weekly limit over 7 consecutive days. As the NTSB continues its investigation, questions remain about what could have been done to prevent the crash—and whether warning signs were missed.

Wind turbine blade crashes into traffic on busy Northeast interstate
One person is reported injured after a wind turbine blade broke loose from a truck and crashed into traffic on Interstate 70 in Maryland. It happened early Monday morning in Washington County, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) confirmed to Fox News Digital. "At approximately 5:30 a.m., a tractor trailer traveling westbound on I-70 was pulling a wind turbine blade that struck the guardrail causing the blade to go partially into the eastbound lanes," a statement said. "The blade was then clipped by a tractor trailer traveling eastbound." The crash resulted in the closure of all westbound lanes of I-70 at I-81 and two lanes in the eastbound direction, the Maryland SHA said on X. All lanes were reopened by 8:28 a.m., a subsequent post said. The scene, captured by a Maryland Department of Transportation camera, showed the blade in the middle of the interstate while impacting traffic on both sides. "Heavy tow crews were able to back the truck up after the guardrail was cut out and get the trailer back onto the westbound lanes. The entire unit was then driven up to I-70 west of Md. Rt. 63 and parked on the wide shoulder," SHA's statement said. The one person taken to the hospital had non-life-threatening injuries, according to FOX 5 DC.
