New cast members and first looks revealed as Harry Potter TV series begins production
On Tuesday, a new round of actors was announced. Rory Wilmot will play Neville Longbottom, Amos Kitson will be Dudley Dursley, Louise Brealey will embody Madam Rolanda Hooch, and Anton Lesser will take on Garrick Ollivander.
What will it be about?
According to HBO, the new series will be 'a faithful adaptation of the beloved Harry Potter books', and 'will feature an exciting and talented cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail and much-loved characters Harry Potter fans have adored for over 25 years'.
The TV show is therefore expected to resemble the original eight films relatively closely, meaning it will follow Harry's discovery that he is a wizard, his departure from his muggle family, his entry to Hogwarts, his adventures alongside Hermione and Ron, and his near-death encounters with He Who Shall Not Be Named (aka the big bad, Lord Voldemort).
However, since TV series usually end up being significantly longer than feature films, the series is expected to explore more of the books' plotlines in greater detail. Each of the seven Harry Potter novels will make up an entire season.
How do people feel about it so far?
Anticipation for the newest adaptation has been steadily building since its announcement in 2023. However, some fans of the films have expressed disappointment over how starkly similar the production shots are to that of the original screen adaptation.
'There is … a thesis to be written on the autocannibalism of pop culture,' one X user wrote. 'The evolution of pop culture from 'new things based on old things' (Star Wars) to 'new takes on old things' (Tim Burton's Batman) to 'new versions of old things that look just like the old things'.'
This is compounded by the controversy around J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter novels. She has been accused of transphobia for her views on gender identity and for suggesting that trans issues affect women's rights.
Over the years, Rowling has contributed money to anti-trans crowdfunding campaigns and also vocally opposed Scotland's gender recognition bill in 2022. She donated £70,000 ($143,700) to For Women Scotland, which launched a legal challenge that resulted in the UK Supreme Court ruling in April that the legal definition of a woman is based on biological sex.
Her views have led some fans to boycott the Harry Potter franchise, including its books, the movies, the video game Hogwarts Legacy, and presumably also the upcoming TV adaptation.
Meanwhile, others are questioning whether the TV remake is necessary given the major success of both the books and the eight films.

'Irrespective of J.K. Rowling, this remake is so redundant,' one X user wrote, to which another commented: 'Is it a remake, or an expansion of the story that wasn't told in the books/movies? If it is just a made-for-TV remake, then no. Completely unnecessary. Go watch the movies.'
Is J.K. Rowling involved?
The series is executive produced by J.K. Rowling, which some fans believe suggests she will be more involved in the upcoming series compared to the films.
'I read the first two episodes of the forthcoming HBO Harry Potter series and they are SO, SO, SO GOOD!' Rowling wrote on X in June. Replying to a comment asking whether she wrote any of the series' scripts, she said, 'no, but I've worked closely with the extremely talented writers.'
Beyond Rowling, the show will be led by Francesca Gardiner and directed by Mark Mylod, both of whom worked on Succession.
When can we watch season one?
The first season is expected to debut on HBO Max in 2027. According to Variety, shooting on season one is expected to last until the autumn of 2026, with season two then going into production after a short break.

"I saw a picture of a toy that's being released, which is kind of to scale to the normal toys, so the Galactus one is about two and a half feet tall. So, yeah, it's very strange to see yourself in toy form." Ineson explained that there was some dialogue from Galactus that he was disappointed to see absent from the flick's final cut, but he respects director Matt Shakman's editorial decisions. He said: "From my point of view, there's no kind of sections, but there were various versions, dialogue-wise, of certain speeches, and there were a couple of phrases that I particularly liked that I would have liked to have stayed in that were replaced by other ones. "But that's not my job. I don't do those things. That's Matt and editors." The Fantastic Four: First Steps also stars Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/ Invisible Woman and she has confessed to becoming a "nerd" about her alter ego. She told Variety: "I'm such a Sue nerd. "There was something so allegorical about her. She was called Invisible Girl. Then Psycho-Man comes and disrupts everything, and she has a meeting with her own dark side in Malice. She comes back, and she renames herself Invisible Woman. So she transforms from a girl to a woman. "There's something about meeting the hardest parts of yourself in Malice that felt extremely poignant to me. I'm really hopeful I might be allowed to be Malice at some point for her." Vanessa previously described how she loves to take on "challenging" roles. The Crown actress told TheTalks: "I really like pushing past my limits in that way — I love it. "When I read something and go, 'Uh, I don't know how I am going to do this,' then I know I should do it. I don't think it feels as challenging when you read a script and go, 'I know exactly how I am going to do this.'"

After the show's co-creator Michael Patrick King announced that And Just Like That wouldn't be returning for a fourth season, Parker took to Instagram to share a clip montage of her playing Bradshaw over the years along with a heartfelt poem to mark the end of the Sex And The City franchise. 'She has made the hardest, worst and best decisions. Travelled near and far for the new, the vintage, friends and love. Changed homes, time zones, boyfriends, her mind, her shoes, her hair, but never her love and devotion to New York City,' Parker wrote, referencing the character she's portrayed for over two decades on HBO's Sex And The City, And Just Like That and in two feature films. Liam Neeson feels that he is too old for action movies
Liam Neeson thinks he is getting too old for action movies. The Taken star has moved away from his typical genre in the new comedy flick The Naked Gun and admits that he doesn't want to "insult" viewers by taking on parts that are unsuitable for his age. In an interview with Variety, Liam said: "The first Taken was 18 years ago, I was 54. Feels like a lifetime ago. I still get offered the occasional one. "But I'm 73, for f***'s sake. I don't want to insult audiences if they're watching whole fight scenes and it's not me. I just wouldn't do it. "Up until recently, I liked doing my own fight stuff. But I don't want to be doing that stuff with a Zimmer frame or walking stick. Sure, there might be another out there, but nothing definite on the horizon." Neeson stars in The Naked Gun as Frank Drebin Jr. - the son of the late Leslie Nielsen's hapless detective in the original movies - and explained that he did not rewatch the previous flicks after taking the lead role in Akiva Schaffer's legacy sequel. He said: "No, I just trusted the script. And knew it would get better the more they worked on it. Akiva was the co-writer but there was always another writer on set - a friend of Akiva's obviously - and they would supply alternate endings to scenes. Try this, try that." Liam and his co-star Pamela Anderson have been at the centre of romance rumours during the promotion of the film and he believes that the pair's "chemistry" was useful for some of the sexual innuendo in the movie. The Star Wars actor said: "Yeah, there's a couple of outlandish scenes. From day one we just seemed to have a nice chemistry together and I trusted that and didn't want to work on it. "Like, there's something happening here, it's nice, so just leave it alone and it'll grow, you know?" Liam added: "We had dinner a couple of times. She's a wonderful baker. She made me sourdough bread. And her assistant made some beautiful muffins. Gluten-free muffins. Terrific. She's very into her gardening back home. "But yeah, we had a couple of meals together." Neeson insists that it was "serious business" for the cast during the making of the movie despite the hilarity involved in the scenes. Asked if the actors burst into laughter during takes, he explained: "No, that didn't happen. When we rehearsed stuff, we'd get rid of our personal giggles. And some of the scenes require certain choreography - sight gags and stuff like that. "I don't want to say it was always serious, far from it. But it was serious business, of course, shooting any movie and keeping a sense of lightness. You know, that's very important."
