A tragic fire incident triggered by a gas leak during a cylinder change that claimed two lives in the city on Thursday has brought to the fore the need for safety measures while handling LPG yet again.Officials highlighted the serious risks associated with improper handling of LPG. On Thursday, a gas leak led to a devastating fire, resulting in the deaths of two person and causing critical injuries to four others. Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire was ignited by a lamp after a gas leak went unnoticed during cylinder replacement.Earlier this year, on January 6, an LPG cylinder explosion in Bommasandra caused significant damage and injuries. In March, a couple sustained severe burns due to an LPG leak in Frazer Town. Additionally, six people, including a child, were injured in an LPG explosion in Abbaiah Reddy Layout near Baiyappanahalli.Officials and safety reports indicate that such incidents are more common in rural areas, largely due to low awareness, delayed maintenance, and limited access to essential safety resources.To reduce the risk of gas leaks and cylinder-related accidents, it is essential to take a proactive approach, experts said. Fire safety experts said regular safety inspections of LPG cylinders and connections should be made mandatory and conducted by certified professionals. Government bodies and LPG providers must also organise awareness programs that educate the public about safe usage, identifying leaks, and responding during emergencies, they said.Furthermore, mock drills and training sessions must be carried out at regular intervals in residential colonies, schools, colleges, workplaces, and public areas. These help in familiarising people with emergency protocols and boost their confidence to handle real-life situations. Telangana Government Prioritizes Women's Empowerment Through Welfare Schemes in Maldakal
Gadwal: The Telangana State Government is implementing numerous welfare schemes aimed at the empowerment and development of women, and every woman must take advantage of these opportunities for her growth, said District Collector B.M. Santosh. On Tuesday, the Collector, along with Gadwal MLA Bandla Krishna Mohan Reddy, participated in the 'Indira Mahila Shakti' and ration card distribution program organized by the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) at the Maldakal Mandal headquarters. Addressing the gathering, Collector Santosh stated that the state government is prioritizing women's economic empowerment through various schemes. He highlighted that over 600 women's self-help groups (SHGs) are actively functioning in Maldakal Mandal, with more than 8,000 women as members. He encouraged more women to join these groups to benefit from interest-free loans, livelihood opportunities, rice procurement centers, and uniform stitching units. The Collector noted that last year, SHGs in the mandal received loans totaling ₹26 crores, and this year, ₹72 lakhs in interest was waived. An additional ₹4.36 lakhs were sanctioned for uniform stitching initiatives. To further enhance livelihood opportunities for rural women, the government released an Enterprise Grounding Amount of ₹15.80 crores. He also announced plans to establish a petrol pump and a 1-megawatt solar power plant in the mandal with an investment of ₹3 crores, creating more income-generating avenues for women. The ration card distribution program saw over 900 new cards issued in Maldakal. The Collector assured that every application is being reviewed at the field level and that the concerned departments are working diligently to resolve issues. He urged beneficiaries to use their free ration responsibly and warned against diverting it to the black market. He added that schemes like Indiramma Housing, Rythu Bharosa, free bus travel for women, and solar power projects are being made accessible to all. He encouraged women to make full use of these programs for their progress. Gadwal MLA Bandla Krishna Mohan Reddy emphasized that the government is giving special priority to women's welfare by implementing a wide range of schemes. Through the Maha Lakshmi Scheme, women now benefit from free bus travel, increased Aarogyasri coverage up to ₹10 lakhs, subsidized LPG cylinders at ₹500, and 200 units of free electricity. He added that Indiramma houses are now being sanctioned in the names of women, and SHGs are being empowered to manage solar power plants, rental buses, petrol pumps, rice mills, and tailoring units. With a vision of turning one crore women into millionaires, the government is providing interest-free loans and multiple income avenues, he said. The MLA assured that every eligible person would receive a ration card and every poor family a house. He also reaffirmed the government's commitment to ongoing infrastructure improvements in Maldakal, including irrigation canals, drinking water facilities, roads, healthcare, and education. The event was attended by Additional Collectors Lakshmi Narayana and Narsinga Rao, local officials, women SHG members, community representatives, and residents.

Mumbai: An explosion caused by a gas cylinder leak resulted in the collapse of a ground-plus-two structure at around 5:35am in Bandra East on Friday, injuring 15 people; three are critical. The injured include an eight-year-old boy and three senior citizens. Most residents were fast asleep. Some were on their way for Friday's first prayers at the adjoining mosque, while others were preparing their children for school when the explosion took place in the home of 65-year-old Rehana Ansari and her husband, 68-year-old Mehmood Ansari, on the first floor. Both sustained 50% burns and were in critical condition at KEM Hospital. The fire brigade managed to rescue six residents of the building after extricating them from the debris. They faced a tough time carrying out the rescue operation, as they had to enter the area where the structure collapsed from a neighbouring masjid. Subsequently, the fire brigade also managed to remove as many as six intact LPG gas cylinders from the debris. "We could get the six persons out consciously and safely, as they were trapped under the debris due to the cavities created by the iron angles used in the structure when it collapsed. Of the six, four were residing on the ground floor and two on the first floor. Some of those on the ground floor got out on their own," said a fire brigade official. "The masjid, whose window was damaged in the explosion, was vacated, and the fire brigade was given space in the masjid to carry out rescue work," said Iftekar Ibrahim Shaikh, who resides in the neighbourhood. "I was just about to start the ritual when parts of the wall fell on me," he said. Khan escaped with a minor injury on his forehead. While many said they were fortunate enough to be taken out of the rubble early, Haseena Sheikh (50) remained trapped for five hours. Sheikh and her 25-year-old son, Asif, who were on the first floor of the structure, had woken up early for prayers as well. They remained trapped under the debris, screaming until the rescue team found them. Sadiq, another son of Haseena, and his wife, Sharmin, were on the second floor and were rescued earlier. Mustafa and Shabana Sayyed, parents of two teenage girls, had just woken their 16-year-old daughter, Alfiya, for school. "Her mother was helping her comb her hair, and in an instant, we heard a loud noise and the roof collapsed." Their 18-year-old daughter was still asleep at the time. The entire family is now admitted to Bhabha Hospital, along with 13 others, with Shabana suffering injuries from metal objects that fell on her as she shielded Alfiya. Mustafa received a few stitches, and both daughters escaped with minor injuries. The youngest victim of the tragedy, eight-year-old Mohammed Irfan Khan, is the only other patient in ICU. He is conscious and is being treated for severe head injuries.
