Genomics, AI shape future of personalised, preventive healthcare in UAE
SARA ALZAABI (ABU DHABI)The UAE has been making significant strides towards personalised, preventive healthcare — and behind the major projects in the sector are collaborations with global institutions and innovators.
Genomics and artificial intelligence (AI) are playing a central role in shaping the future of health and enhancing patient-centred care, experts and delegates at the Abu Dhabi Global Healthcare Week (ADGHW) told Aletihad on Thursday. 'Genomics is a fundamental part of biology; understanding our genome helps us identify risks for diseases like cancer and heart conditions. It also shows us which medicines work best for each individual, said Jacob Thaysen, CEO of Illumina, an American biotech company. Illumina has been at the forefront of sequencing the entire UAE population's DNA, a groundbreaking project aimed at creating personalised health profiles. 'Now, our focus is on turning these insights into real steps to improve health and longevity,' Thaysen said. 'By understanding polygenic risk scores, people can take action to avoid diseases like cancer.'The UAE is the first country in the world to implement such a large-scale genomic project, Thaysen said. 'It is setting the stage for the future of healthcare worldwide.'Pharmaceutical firm Eli Lilly and Company is also among those who have established strong ties with UAE health authorities, particularly the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi.'We focus on three main therapeutic areas: diabetes, obesity, neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, and oncology, particularly cancer,' said Nadim Hasbani, Head of Corporate Affairs Strategy, Middle East and Turkey areas at Eli Lilly and Company.The firm signed two partnerships with the DoH in 2024. 'The first is focused on Alzheimer's, to establish a Centre of Excellence in Abu Dhabi. The second MoU addresses obesity, exploring alternative solutions like medications instead of relying solely on surgery.'Meanwhile, healthcare provider Mediclinic — another participant at the ADGHW — is focused on promoting a healthcare system built around wellness. 'Prevention is better than cure. Mediclinic is absolutely committed to prevention and to ensuring a balanced healthcare ecosystem,' said Barry Bedford, COO for UAE at Mediclinic Middle East.
Explaining the role of AI and technology in this mission, he said: 'AI can help us predict and prevent conditions—but we still need that compassionate human interaction between doctor and patient. Itis critical that we do not take the compassion out of healthcare.'

Marcos is expected to invite Trump to attend the East Asia Summit, which the Philippines will host during its ASEAN chairmanship in 2026. Marcos is the first ASEAN head of state to make an official visit to the US under Trump's current term.

20 July 2025 10:02 ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)Global gas flaring surged for a second year in a row, wasting about $63 billion in lost energy and setting back efforts to manage emissions and boost energy security and the practice of burning natural gas during oil extraction, reached 151 billion cubic meters (bcm) in 2024, up 3 bcm from the previous year and the highest level in almost two estimated 389 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent—46 million of that from unburnt methane, one of the most potent greenhouse gases—was needlessly some countries have reduced flaring, the top nine largest-flaring countries continue to account for three-quarters of all flaring, but less than half of global oil data compiled and analyaed in the World Bank's annual Global Gas Flaring Tracker shows that flaring intensity—the amount of gas flared per barrel of oil produced—has remained stubbornly high for the last 15 years.'When more than a billion people still don't have access to reliable energy and numerous countries are seeking more sources of energy to meet higher demand, it's very frustrating to see this natural resource wasted,' said Demetrios Papathanasiou, World Bank Global Director for Energy and report highlights that countries committed to the Zero Routine Flaring by 2030 (ZRF) initiative have performed significantly better than countries that have not made the commitment. Since 2012, countries that endorsed ZRF achieved an average 12% reduction in flaring intensity, whereas those that did not saw a 25% accelerate progress, the World Bank's Global Flaring and Methane Reduction (GFMR) Partnership is supporting methane and flaring reduction projects through catalytic grants, technical assistance, policy and regulatory reform advisory services, capacity building, and institutional strengthening. For example, in Uzbekistan, GFMR allocated $11 million to identify and fix methane leaks in the gas transportation network, cutting methane emissions by 9,000 tonnes annually, and potentially reaching up to 100,000 tonnes each year. US threatens Mexican airline flights over airline competition issues
The Trump administration said it is taking a series of actions against Mexico over the government's decisions to rescind some flight slots for American carriers and force US cargo carriers to relocate operations in Mexico City. US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said in a statement the department could disapprove flight requests from Mexico if the government fails to address US concerns over decisions made in 2022 and 2023. The department is also proposing to withdraw antitrust immunity from the Delta Air Lines joint venture with Aeromexico to address competitive issues in the market. Mexico is the most popular international destination among US airline travellers. The Transportation Department said Mexico has not been in compliance with a bilateral air agreement since 2022 when it abruptly rescinded slots and then forced US all-cargo carriers to relocate operations in 2023. Duffy said Mexico was expected to allow construction to alleviate congestion at Mexico City's Benito Juarez International Airport (MEX), but that has yet to materialize three years later. "By restricting slots and mandating that all-cargo operations move out of MEX, Mexico has broken its promise, disrupted the market, and left American businesses holding the bag for millions in increased costs," the department said. The Transportation Department issued a pair of orders requiring Mexican airlines to file schedules with the department for all their US operations and requiring prior US approval before operating any large passenger or cargo aircraft charter flights to or from the United States. "Mexico has altered the playing field significantly for airlines in ways that reduce competition and allow predominant competitors to gain an unfair advantage in the US-Mexico market," the department said. "Mexico's actions harm airlines seeking to enter the market, existing competitor airlines, consumers of air travel and products relying on time-sensitive air cargo shipments traded between the two countries, and other stakeholders in the American economy." If the US rescinds antitrust approval for Delta and Aeromexico, they would be required to discontinue cooperation on common pricing, capacity management, and revenue sharing, but Delta would also be able to retain its equity stake in Aeromexico, maintain all of its existing flying in the US-Mexico market unimpeded and continue a partnership.
