Mike Myers, Dawn Richard, Lauren London and Kid Cudi named in Diddy trial. Here's why

Yahoo19-05-2025
The trial of Sean "Diddy" Combs is underway, in what is expected to be a closely watched and scandal-ridden celebrity trial.
Combs is on trial for an array of federal charges, including sex trafficking, racketeering and transportation to engage in prostitution. He has pleaded not guilty to all counts.
At the start of trial, potential jurors were given a list of people and places related to one of the biggest names in music, in hopes of excluding individuals with too-close ties to the mogul's massive web of connections – a unique challenge.
The names included Michael B. Jordan, Kid Cudi, Cassie Ventura Fine, singer Michelle Williams, Mike Myers, Dallas Austin, Lauren London and Dawn Richard.
The list, a who's who of Hollywood and music elite, paints a picture of Combs' far-reaching influence in the entertainment industry. Now with a jury set and witness testimony revealing new details about Combs' alleged dealings, the public is learning more about just how embedded he truly is.
Diddy on trial newsletter: Step inside the courtroom as music mogul faces sex-crimes charges.
Known for the hit track "Me & U," the lead single off her self-titled (and only) studio album, Ventura Fine is the prosecution's star witness after alleging in a bombshell lawsuit in 2023 that Combs had trafficked, sexually assaulted and physically abused her during their decadelong relationship. The two "amicably" settled the lawsuit a day after her filing.
The former Bad Boy Records artist, who'd been dating the hip-mogul since she was 19, was on the stand for four days in Week 1, tearfully testifying about the alleged control he had over her career, the volatility of the producer's moods and the frequent emotional, psychological and physical abuse she faced.
She has also revealed details about the drug-fueled "freak offs" they participated in, her eight-figure settlement and Diddy's previously unknown opioid overdose in 2012.
Kid Cudi was briefly romantically involved with Ventura Fine, Combs' ex-girlfriend. The singer testified on May 14 that her 2011 romance with Cudi, born Scott Mescudi, angered Combs and sparked a violent outburst.
The Ohio-born rapper was first mentioned in Ventura Fine's bombshell 2023 civil lawsuit against Combs, with Cassie citing an alleged incident in which Combs threatened to "blow up" Cudi's vehicle, seemingly in retaliation for his relationship with Ventura Fine.
Cassie alleges Diddy assaulted and threatened her over Kid Cudi relationship
The alleged arson incident also appeared to be part of prosecutors' case against Combs. Ventura Fine said in court that Combs discovered the relationship after going through her phone.
Per Ventura Fine's account, Combs became angry and lunged at Cassie with a wine bottle opener between his fingers, but she said she managed to escape and went to a hotel, where she contacted Kid Cudi using a burner phone. She added that Combs threatened that he was "going to hurt Scott and I."
USA TODAY has reached out to Kid Cudi's rep for comment.
Ventura Fine touched on a connection to actor Michael B. Jordan as Combs' attorneys scrutinized Cassie's other relationships in court May 15. Ventura Fine said Combs suspected that she was in a relationship with the Emmy-nominated actor after the pair broke up in 2015, per Fox News. At the time of their split, the singer-actress was filming a movie in South Africa. (Cassie starred in the musical drama "Honey 3: Dare to Dance," which was set in South Africa and reportedly concluded filming in December 2015.)
Dawn Richard, a former member of the Combs-founded groups Danity Kane and Diddy – Dirty Money, is likely on the list as she filed a lawsuit last year alleging she witnessed his abuse of Ventura Fine and was also sexually assaulted, falsely imprisoned and deprived food, sleep and pay by the "Bad Boy Records" founder.
Actress Lauren London, who also appears on the list, has been open about Combs' support for her in the wake of the death of her late partner, rapper Nipsey Hussle.
Dallas Austin, a fellow music producer, came up in the business at a similar time to Combs, and may have made the list for his close childhood relationship with late model Kim Porter, a longtime romantic partner of Diddy's. Austin was also mentioned as one of the attendees of Ventura Fine's 21st birthday party.
It is not immediately clear why Destiny's Child singer Williams or actor Myers made the list, though there is a brief segment in "Austin Powers," among Myers' most famous movies, that pokes fun at the music mogul. USA TODAY has reached out to all of their reps for comment.
Combs is facing federal sex-crimes and trafficking charges in a sprawling suit that has eroded his status as a power player and kingmaker in the entertainment industry.
He was arrested in September 2024 and has been charged with racketeering, sex trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution. He has pleaded not guilty to all five counts.
The trial will not be televised, as cameras are typically not allowed in federal criminal trial proceedings.
USA TODAY will be reporting live from the courtroom.

On a spirited Saturday, the Newport Jazz Festival defies labels

Other sets, too, fell squarely inside the jazz firmament. Trumpeter Terence Blanchard (whom McBride called a 'big brother') led his band through an atmospheric set on the Quad Stage inside the Fort Adams walls, drawing on his long track record as a composer for film and television. The young British saxophonist Nubya Garcia brought her big, Sonny Rollins-inspired tone and songs from her second album, 'Odyssey,' to the main stage. And the wonderfully inventive drummer Marcus Gilmore led a band in tribute to his late grandfather, the Boston-born Advertisement That ad-hoc band featured a quartet of ringers, led by alto saxophonist Kenny Garrett and supported by two Berklee College of Music faculty members, the pianist Danilo Pérez and bassist John Patitucci. There was experimental chill-out music, Quiet Storm-style neo-soul, a banging DJ set from a descendant of jazz royalty, and a 75-minute finale from headliner Janelle Monáe that was heavy on the funk. Perhaps the most welcome surprise came from the Fleck, Castañeda, Sánchez Trio, which combined the virtuosic banjo playing of the restless bluegrass mainstay Béla Fleck with the superb drummer Antonio Sánchez, and the Colombian harpist Edmar Castañeda. Castañeda was a revelation. Attacking his instrument with flair and aggression, he's surely been called 'the Jimi Hendrix of the harp' elsewhere. The group call themselves the BEATrio, Sánchez explained, after their respective first-name initials. McBride and Newport Festivals Foundation executive director Jay Sweet have taken plenty of steps to acknowledge the listening habits of the younger cohort of their Newport fan base. Some in attendance seemed eager to see the mononymous Willow, the daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. Anchoring the last set on the Quad Stage, she and her ferocious, mostly women band tapped into '90s nostalgia and the singer's vocal range and dexterity on her latest tracks, including 'home' (co-written with Jon Batiste) and 'symptom of life.' Willow performs on Saturday at the Newport Jazz Festival. Rich Fury/Courtesy of the Newport Jazz Festiva Wearing headphones, the young British rap/R&B singer Samm Henshaw acknowledged that he hadn't performed live in a while. 'So you're all very scary to me right now,' he joked before teeing up some new songs with the crowd-pleasing 'How Does It Feel?,' his 2018 breakthrough. Other relative newcomers included KNOWER, an experimental mashup led by a punky frontwoman (Genevieve Artadi) and a drummer (Louis Cole) who drives the band from drum-and-bass to prog metal, and Rich Ruth, the full-band project of Nashvillean multi-instrumentalist Michael Ruth. Their unusual blend, including xylophone, violin, and baritone sax, resulted in an impressionistic, spacey-slash-spiritual sound that hit a sweet spot around midday. Advertisement The jazz royalty previously mentioned was Flying Lotus, the alter ego of DJ-producer Steven Ellison, who is the grandnephew of Alice Coltrane. FlyLo, as he's known, alternated between deafening video-game glitchery and rump-shaking classics (P-Funk, Kool & the Gang, an isolated guitar rhythm that sounded like KC and the Sunshine Band) at the Fort Stage. 'I don't know if you can tell,' he boomed from atop his perch. 'I'm trying to get you all to dance.' Flying Lotus, the grandnephew of Alice Coltrane, appears at the Fort Stage of the Newport Jazz Festival on Saturday. Rich Fury/Courtesy of the Newport JAzz It worked for him. Monáe, in the day's final slot on the main stage, had to work hard to keep the crowd from streaming toward the lines for the buses and water ferries. Fronting a dapper big band, she leaned into her defiant persona (on recent tracks 'Float' and 'Champagne [expletive]') before shouting out musical greats, from Prince, Nina Simone, and Miles Davis, to Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Bits of reggae, electronica, and James Brown surfaced in her music before an inevitable encore of 'Tightrope,' her biggest hit. Fitting for the setting, she wrapped up with 'Come Alive (War of the Roses),' a song that borrows from the Cab Calloway, call-and-response era of big band jazz. 'Categorize me, I defy every label,' she'd rapped earlier in the set, on 'Q.U.E.E.N.' They could have used that as the day's tagline. Cincinnati beatdown victim reveals 'very bad brain trauma' in first remarks since viral assault

One of the victims in the viral Cincinnati brutal beatdown is speaking out to reveal the extent of her injuries, one week after bystander footage captured the moment she was thrown to the ground while reportedly trying to break up the fight. The woman, identified as Holly, can be seen with visible injuries to her face as she speaks to the camera to provide an update on her condition. "It's been very, very hard, and I'm still recovering," Holly said in a video posted online. "I still have very bad brain trauma." "I just want to say thank you so much to everyone for all of the love and support. It is very humbling that you have sent your prayers, your blessings. It's definitely what's keeping me going, and you have just brought back faith and humanity." Holly declined Fox News Digital's request for comment. Holly is one of six victims injured in the July 26 brawl, where she was knocked unconscious on the corner of Elm and Fourth Streets. So far, authorities have arrested four of the six alleged assailants, as a fugitive unit is 'actively pursuing' the two additional suspects. Jermaine Matthews, 39, Dominique Kittle, 37, Montianez Merriweather, 34, and Dekyra Vernon, 24, were arrested for their alleged involvement in the fight. As of Sunday, Kittle, Merriweather and Vernon remain in custody at the Hamilton County Jail, with Matthews posting bond last week. Matthews is charged with two counts of felonious assault, one count of misdemeanor assault and one count of aggravated riot. Both Merriweather and Vernon are charged with felonious assault, aggravated riot and assault charges. Kittle is charged with one count of assault. New footage obtained by Fox News Digital shows the moments leading up to the fight, with one of the victims allegedly yelling a racial slur at the group before the violence broke out. "I did see other fights going on, it was just one of those deals where you got people out drinking and I'm pretty sure drinking had a lot to do with that fight," Jay Black told Fox News Digital. "But it's very unfortunate for the young lady. I pray for her and her family, she was just trying to help out." Black insisted that, "contrary to what people think," there were "a lot of people" who attempted to intervene. Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge revealed that out of the approximately 100 people who witnessed the incident or were involved in the brawl, only one individual called law enforcement. "Trust me when I say this, had the Cincinnati Police Department been notified in real time, our officers would have responded with urgency and force to protect life," Theetge said at the news conference on Friday. However, Holly's tearful statement ended with a heartfelt note to those who were sending their well wishes after seeing the shocking footage. "God bless you all, thank you," Holly said. "I appreciate everything that you're doing for me and my family. It's been very, very hard and I'm still recovering."
