Breaking Ex-cathaoirleach pleads guilty to €172,000 theft from charity
Seán McKiernan, with an address at Trinity Bungalow, Virginia Road, Bailieborough in Co Cavan, was charged with 58 counts of theft at various unknown locations within the State.
The charges relate to thefts in amounts ranging from €500 to €7,500 from Navan Mental Health Housing Association on dates in 2019.
McKiernan, 43, appeared before Judge John Martin at Trim Circuit Court, where the former Fine Gael councillor pleaded guilty to two sample charges.
The first sample count relates to the theft of €5,230 on 26 March 2019 at an unknown location, while the second count involves the theft of €800 from the Meath-based charity on the 6 April 2020.
McKiernan was a councillor for the Bailieborough electoral area from 2007 to 2014.
He made history in 2011 when, at age 29, he was elected as the youngest ever Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council.
He was a member of the Cavan Monaghan Education Training Board and served a term as its chair.
McKiernan was also a member of the national executive of Fine Gael for over a decade.
Free legal aid was previously granted to Mr McKiernan in the form of a solicitor and two barristers.
Judge Martin remanded McKiernan on continuing bail to appear before Trim Circuit Court on 21 October next for a sentencing date to be set.

‘Urgent action' needed to prevent kids ‘being exposed to harmful content' ahead of video sharing site age checks laws

Speaking on the issue, Deputy Keogh said: "As a newly elected TD and as Chair of the Children & Equality Committee, pushing for initiatives that protect children's mental health from harmful online content is a top priority. "Access to pornography nowadays is a free for all and is completely unregulated." She added: "If a parent discovered that their teenager had been exposed to pornography while watching television at a friend's house, it's likely they would be permanently banned from visiting, and the friend's parent could be reported to Tusla. READ MORE ON IRISH NEWS "Yet we give teenagers smartphones with open access to the internet, where they regularly encounter misogynist and toxic content online, especially on well-known pornographic websites." Online Safety commissioner Niamh Hodnett has said that video-sharing platforms will be supervised by Coimisiun na Mean to ensure verifications are in place by July. For explicit websites based outside of Ireland, the commission will work with the European Commission and regulators across the EU. 'I support recent comments by Tánaiste Simon Harris, who said users here should be at least 16 before they can have a social media account, in line with Ireland's Digital Age of Consent. 'URGENT ACTION NEEDED' 'I truly believe urgent action needs to be taken across the board to prevent children being exposed to pornography, violence and other harmful content online.'. Keogh added that she looks forward to engaging with the commission and social media platforms through the Oireachtas Children's Committee. Woman (70s) killed in crash with truck near Drogheda
A woman in her 70s has died after a crash on Thursday morning. The collision involving a car and a truck happened around 10.30am at Platin Terrace, on the outskirts of Drogheda , Co Meath . The woman, who was driving the car, was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported. Her body has been moved to Our Lady's Hospital, in Navan. Gardaí and emergency services are attending the scene. READ MORE The road remains closed to allow forensic collision investigators to conduct examinations. Local diversions are now in place, a garda representative said. Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact them. Drivers with camera or dashcam footage from the area between 10am and 11am this morning are asked to make this available to Gardaí.
