In a move straight out of a science fiction novel, Germany is pioneering the use of live cockroaches as covert surveillance tools. A tech startup called
SWARM Biotactics
, based in Kassel, is developing AI-powered "backpacks" that are mounted on real cockroaches, effectively turning them into biologically integrated spy agents. These miniature devices are equipped with sensors, cameras, and neural stimulators, allowing remote control and autonomous swarming in tight or inaccessible environments, according to Reuters. Backed by over €13 million in funding, this innovation is set to redefine the future of surveillance and battlefield intelligence.
From lab to battlefield: How the spy cockroach works
SWARM Biotactics' technology involves fitting Madagascar hissing cockroaches with ultra-lightweight, AI-enabled backpacks. These include:
Tiny cameras for real-time reconnaissance
Environmental sensors to detect gas, radiation, or heat
Neural stimulators that send signals to the insect's nervous system to direct movement
Wireless communication modules for operator control or swarm-level coordination
This tech allows the bugs to slip through rubble, walls, or tight spaces where conventional drones fail—making them ideal for urban combat zones, hostage rescues, or disaster response, according to Reuters.

While the primary use is for military surveillance and reconnaissance, the company also sees applications in disaster relief, such as locating survivors in collapsed buildings or chemical hazard detection in industrial zones. These AI-equipped insects could soon become part of firefighting, urban planning, and search-and-rescue operations.

NEW DELHI: India has once again missed the boat to enhance the underwater operational endurance and stealth of its latest Scorpene or Kalvari-class conventional submarines, with the already delayed air independent propulsion (AIP) system developed by DRDO still not ready for integration with the vessels. The first Scorpene submarine to be built at the Mazagon Docks (MDL) with French collaboration, INS Kalvari, which was commissioned in Dec 2017, will now complete her ongoing maintenance refit at the Mumbai naval dockyard without being retrofitted with the AIP plug as was originally planned, defence ministry sources told TOI. "The fuel cell-based AIP system developed by DRDO's Naval Materials Research Lab, which has L&T as the prime industry partner, is still not yet operationally available. Hopefully, it should be ready by the time the second Scorpene (INS Khanderi) comes for her scheduled normal maintenance refit in mid-2026," a source said. The Navy after a long delay has inducted six diesel-electric Scorpene submarines, constructed by MDL in collaboration with the French Naval Group under Project-75 for over Rs 23,000 crore, with the sixth INS Vagsheer being commissioned in Jan this year. Under it, each submarine will undergo a complex project called "jumboisation", involving precision cutting of the hull, safe insertion of the AIP plug and then rejoining the structure to ensure the vessel is fully operational again. Unlike nuclear-powered submarines, which have unlimited underwater endurance, diesel-electric boats must surface or snorkel every couple of days to get oxygen to recharge their batteries. Those fitted with AIP, however, can stay submerged for around two weeks to significantly boost their stealth and combat capabilities. With Pakistan on course to induct eight Yuan or Hangor-class conventional submarines with AIP from China in a major capability jump, India's depleting conventional underwater combat arm has become a major worry. China, of course, now has the world's largest navy, which includes over 50 diesel-electric and 10 nuclear submarines. Apart from the six French-origin Scorpenes, India has seven very old Russian Kilo-class and four German HDW diesel-electric submarines at present. It also has two operational SSBNs (nuclear-powered submarines armed with nuclear ballistic missiles) in INS Arihant and INS Arighaat, with the third to be commissioned as INS Aridhaman this year, as reported by TOI earlier. The long-pending projects to build three additional Scorpenes for Rs 38,000 crore and six new-generation diesel-electric submarines, with both AIP and land-attack cruise missiles, for Rs 70,000 crore under Project-75-India at MDL, are also yet to be finalised and inked.

Bengaluru: HCLTech CEO C Vijayakumar has emerged as the highest-paid Indian IT CEO, crossing the $10 million mark and topping the compensation charts. US-based Vijayakumar earned Rs 94.6 crore in the 2024–25 financial year, which comprised a base pay of Rs 15.8 crore, a performance-linked bonus of Rs 13.9 crore, long-term RSUs worth Rs 56.9 crore, and a bonus of Rs 1.7 crore. Vijayakumar's peers include TCS CEO K. Krithivasan, who earned Rs26.5 crore for the 2023–24 financial year, marking a 4.6% increase from the previous year. Infosys CEO Salil Parekh received a 22% hike, taking his total compensation to Rs 80.6 crore. Wipro CEO Srinivas Pallia, who took over in April last year, earned Rs 53.6 crore; since this is his first year in the role, there is no prior comparison. According to the firm's annual report, Vijayakumar received a salary increase of 7.9% compared to the previous year. However, the average salary hike for employees excluding managerial personnel in the last financial year was 3.1%. Vijayakumar's salary was 662.5 times the median remuneration of employees in the 2024–25 financial year. Bengaluru: A senior Karnataka minister has said tech behemoth TCS planning to lay off 12,000 employees is "alarming" and hinted at withdrawing the labour law exemption, while his ministerial colleague has confirmed to TOI the tech industry will continue to enjoy the safety bulwark from labour inspections until 2029. The Karnataka labour department is seeking a serious "relook" at the exemption under the Karnataka (Standing Orders) Act of 1946 for IT, ITeS, BPOs and startups. In light of the TCS move, labour minister Santosh Lad said there is an urgent need to look at the exemption clause enjoyed by tech and tech-enabled companies. However, IT&BT minister Priyank Kharge said the exemption clause has been in force from 2014 and will remain in effect till 2029. "Nothing can be done for now," he added. Minister Kharge said the TCS development "is an internal matter" over which the govt does not have any control and that it does not reflect the condition in other IT and ITES companies. On Sunday, Lad said his department is already talking to TCS and coordinating with other relevant departments. There are four conditions laid down in the standing-order exemptions to IT/ITES/BPO and startups: Set up internal committee to prevent sexual harassment at workplace; form a grievance-redressal committee; inform the labour department on disciplinary actions against employees; ensure employee service conditions at workplace. These exemptions were enforced in Karnataka for the IT/ITES sector in 2014 for a five-year period. Subsequently, it was extended twice for a five-period each. BOX Industrial Employment (Standing Orders) Act 1946 The labour standing orders are applicable to any industry which has over 100 employees and are intended to maintain harmonious relationships between employers and employees, to regulate conditions of recruitment, discharge, disciplinary action, leave, holidays of the workers. The orders dictate classification of the workforce, work schedule, holidays, paydays, and wages. Notices must be issued before termination of employment, allow formation of labour unions and labour dept inspection.
