Enniskillen May day rally delivers high-speed action and family fun

Yahoo08-05-2025
St. Angelo Airfield reverberated with the rumble of engines as the Enniskillen May Day Stages Rally roared into action on Monday, May 5.
Celebrating its 50th anniversary, the event was organised by the Enniskillen Motor Club and featured 80 rally cars competing, along with some of the most popular and well-known drivers, including Garry Jennings, Aaron McLaughlin, and Derek McGarrity.
Garry Jennings, with co-driver Dale McGettigan, claimed the Campbell Contracts May Day Rally trophy after a thrilling victory.
Mr. Jennings was the fastest on four out of five stages in his Ford Fiesta Rally2, finishing with a lead of 9.6 seconds after 24.4 competitive miles. His winning stretch was interrupted by Aaron McLaughlin's Volkswagen Polo GTi R5 and co-driver Darren Curran.
Mr. McLaughlin took second place, while third place was claimed by Derek McGarrity and co-driver Derek Jobb.
With hundreds gathered at the airfield, The Impartial Reporter spoke to several spectators to hear about their experience at the May Day rally.
Stephen Graham brought his young sons—Harry, Archie, and Isaac—out for a day of sunshine, ice cream, and exciting rally spectating.
The family has attended many car rallies, including last year's May Day rally in Enniskillen, as well as various vintage car shows. The boys especially love car racing video games like Need for Speed. Young Isaac was sporting a Hot Wheels jumper, complementing the rally cars.
'We had to get dressed up for it and look the part,' Stephen said.
They were excited to watch Derek McGarrity race around the track, showcasing his expert skill and finely tuned driving reflexes.
Stephen said: 'We are looking forward to seeing the fast cars.'
'Especially when the cars go around the tight bales,' Harry added.
Archie said: 'I like to see the cars drift around the place,
Stephen was also looking forward to seeing some of the vintage cars, he said: 'Maybe see the Mk2 Escorts (Classic Ford), the vintage yokes, they weren't vintage when I was small, now they are.
'I like to see the older classics.'
Another family attending the race was Adrian McManus and his son Loughalin, who have shared a passion for cars and rally driving since Loughalin was young.
'We are from Blacklion, and this is our local rally. I love motor sport, I always have done, and it's nice to come, especially when it's so family-friendly. You can bring your child here and you can see everything
Adrian hasn't just been a spectator; he's also taken the wheel of a rally car at the Rally School Ireland in Monaghan with his wife who is a mechanic
'The school is really good, they coach you on how to drive a rally car properly, they teach you how to visualise corners as well.'
Adrian used to work as a mechanic and has amassed a collection of vintage cars.
'My daily car is a 22-year-old Toyota Celica, I also have an Opel Manta, and an original Mini.'
Laura Browne and her boyfriend, Daniel Johnston, attended the rally on Monday, looking forward to seeing Daniel's uncle, Darren McGuinness.
Daniel said: 'I would come out every year pretty much, I just enjoy getting out.'
While Laura works in a bank and wouldn't want to set foot in a rally car herself, she enjoys spectating the races, describing the feeling as an 'adrenaline rush'.
'It's nice that the sun is out; if it were raining, it would have been worse,' she said.
Jessie Kee and Ellie Kee brought their dog Bella to the May Day rally to watch Jessie's fiancé compete.
'My fiancé, Aaron McAleer, is a navigator with Mark Preston, number 24.
'This is our first time here this year, and this is Aaron's first time navigating as well.
'It's just the whole buzz of everything, and how they and seeing how they get on, and obviously hope there are no accidents.'
It was also young Bella the dog's first rally, and she was just as excited as her owners.

Greg Gutfeld, Fox's Late-Night King, Joins Fallon For Rare Crossover

Greg Gutfeld's appearance on NBC's The Tonight Show later this week not only marks the Fox News Channel host's first appearance on one of the major late-night TV talk shows. It also comes at a time when the Fox host's star is on the rise, given the new Fox Nation game show he hosts in addition to his regular nightly Fox talk show. And, more importantly, his upcoming Jimmy Fallon appearance on Thursday coincides with Gutfeld increasingly proving to be the exception to the late night talk show rule. While the economics and key metrics for traditional late-night talk TV remain in terminal decline — and with CBS' The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and its veteran host set to disappear altogether next year — Fox's motormouth funnyman is quite possibly the only late-night host without a reason to be looking over his shoulder at the moment. In fact, the latest Nielsen data points to Gutfeld continuing to dominate the late-night landscape, his Gutfeld! being the highest-rated in the genre (averaging a little over 3.1 million viewers and just shy of 400,000 in the key demo). Since the announcement of Colbert's cancellation alone, Gutfeld's ratings are up 11% in terms of total viewers and 4% in the demo. What makes Gutfeld's ascent even more remarkable is how lean his operation is compared to the network shows he now outperforms. While CBS reportedly burned through a staggering $100 million annually to produce Colbert's show — which included a staff of around 200 — Gutfeld! runs much leaner. Fox's Greg Gutfeld is winning the late-night ratings war I haven't been able to nail down an official exact figure but have nevertheless heard that the budget for Gutfeld! doesn't even approach double-digit millions, and that the show's team numbers around 20 people. No wonder former late-night host Samantha Bee commented just days ago that CBS' cancellation of Colbert was a 'no-brainer," given the fact that the show was 'definitely hemorrhaging money.' Likewise, it's no surprise that Gutfeld couldn't resist a bit of teasing during his Friday episode, when he alluded to Colbert's recent interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris: 'While Colbert interviews a loser, Jimmy Fallon invites … a winner.' Gutfeld's audience applauded as he went on to plug his upcoming chat with Fallon. 'It's the biggest crossover since the Harlem Globetrotters visited the Golden Girls.' He continued: 'Unlike the other guys, Jimmy sitting with me proves he's not afraid of upsetting his peers or afraid of my mesmerizing charm.' When Gutfeld! premiered back in April 2021, it brought a comedic and politics-infused vibe into competition with the celebrity-heavy format practiced by NBC, CBS, and ABC. The Gutfeld! formula essentially blended its host's sharp monologues with irreverent panel chats — and that bet has clearly paid off for Fox. Since its launch, Gutfeld! has grown its total viewership 113% according to Nielsen data (and 46% in the coveted 25-54 demographic). By August 2022, it had even dethroned Colbert as the top-rated late-night show, a lead it never surrendered. Gutfeld's upcoming sitdown with Fallon, meanwhile, is also notable for another reason: Fallon, whose show typically avoids overt political drama these days in favor of games and music, has rarely booked a conservative media personality of Gutfeld's profile (at least in the Trump 2.0 era; Trump himself, of course, famously appeared as a happy-go-lucky guest before becoming president). It could be argued this is an attempt by NBC to make a play for a broader audience, bearing in mind that late-night guests tend to overwhelmingly lean to the left of the ideological divide. Or maybe it's simply a ratings play, given Gutfeld's dominance of late-night. Whatever the reason, the fact remains: This is a terrible time to be a late-night TV host, and to be a network working to support that host's show. Everything from streaming to hyper-partisan politics are eating away at ad dollars and pulling audiences elsewhere. CBS cited financial reasons for pulling the plug on Colbert, despite strong viewership compared to his peers (as an aside: One can't help wondering that if losing money really was the issue, it seems strange for CBS to prefer to continue bleeding money into 2026 rather than pulling the plug on Colbert immediately). In this climate, Gutfeld stands as the outlier. He's built a cable-based juggernaut that not only tops his direct competitors but often outdraws the combined viewership of the traditional late-night slate. Gutfeld can chuckle about his Fallon appearance being a 'crossover,' but in terms of ratings momentum he's the one who has the upper hand.

After Jimmy Fallon Was 'Shocked' By Stephen Colbert's Late Show Cancellation, The Tonight Show Host's New Primetime Series Will Air Twice Per Week

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. The 2025 TV schedule has been a tumultuous time for the world of late night television, including the quiet cancellation of After Midnight in the spring and the shocking cancellation of Stephen Colbert's The Late Show in July. In fact, that latter cancellation caused such massive waves that huge names in pop culture spoke up in solidarity with Colbert. Jimmy Fallon, longtime host of The Tonight Show, expressed support for the Late Show icon... not long before his new show got a premiere date, officially being set to air twice a week on NBC starting in late September. How Jimmy Fallon Reacted To The Late Show's Cancellation Just like Jimmy Kimmel Live!'s Jimmy Kimmel from ABC, NBC's Jimmy Fallon didn't hold back from showing support for the CBS host who was technically his competition in late night television. He posted in a since-expired Instagram Story that he was "just as shocked as everyone" about Stephen Colbert's Late Show and "really thought I'd ride this out with him for years to come." He went a little farther when he joined the likes of fellow NBC late night host Seth Meyers as well as Jon Stewart, John Oliver, Anderson Cooper, Andy Cohen, Adam Sandler, and more celebs for a funny bit on The Late Show in one of the first shots back at CBS for the cancellation. Basically, there was some serious solidarity between late night TV hosts when one of their own got the worst kind of news. For Fallon, however, his future on NBC is looking pretty good. Jimmy Fallon's New Show Gets A Premiere Date Jimmy Fallon's The Tonight Show isn't going anywhere for the time being, and he's in fact debuting a brand new show starting this fall. In the same announcement that confirmed Law & Order: Organized Crime is returning to NBC, On Brand with Jimmy Fallon received its premiere date(s). The new program's first night of the week will be Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET, starting on September 30. The second night of the week will be Fridays at 8 p.m. ET, starting on October 3. The Tonight Show will continue to air Monday - Thursday, as has been the case since NBC cut the Friday night broadcasts last September. So, what is On Brand with Jimmy Fallon? Well, the unscripted series follows Jimmy Fallon after he starts a marketing agency and fills it with the most creative and competitive people he can find, with Bozoma Saint John as the "On Brand Agency's" Chief Marketing Officer to mentor and evaluate the participants. In each episode, the participants of the On Brand Agency will work with a major brand that is looking for a new campaign, including Captain Morgan, Dunkin', KitchenAid, Marshalls, Pillsbury, SONIC, Southwest Airlines, and Therabody. By the end, one creative will be left standing and receive a cash prize as well as the experience gained from competition. Fallon is on board On Brand as host, executive producer, and creator. What About The Tonight Show? I don't want to claim that anything is guaranteed in late night TV after the shocker of Stephen Colbert's Late Show cancellation, but Jimmy Fallon renewed his deal with NBCUniversal as the host of The Tonight Show through 2028 last summer. It seems that he should be safely on the air for another few years if all goes according to plan. Seth Meyers also renewed his deal with NBCUniversal to continue hosting Late Night through 2028. Late Night follows The Tonight Show on weekday nights. That may partially explain Meyers' somewhat optimistic take about the future of late night TV... but then again, he made those comments before The Late Show with Stephen Colbert got the axe. For now, though, there are indeed reasons to be hopeful about the future of late night on at least NBC. Plus, if you're a fan of his work on The Tonight Show, you can get more of Jimmy Fallon starting this fall on September 30 with the premiere of On Brand with Jimmy Fallon. Solve the daily Crossword

Blue Jays acquire Cy Young winner Shane Bieber in trade with Guardians

The 2020 American League Cy Young winner is on the move. The Toronto Blue Jays acquired Shane Bieber from the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for pitching prospect Khal Stephen, the teams announced on Thursday. Bieber, 30, has not made a start this season as he has been recovering from Tommy John surgery that he underwent last season. In free agency this past offseason, Bieber signed a one-year deal with the Guardians, reportedly worth up to $10 million that included a $16 million player option in 2026. The two-time All-Star pitched in just two games last season before undergoing surgery. Bieber was shut down after his first rehab start when he experienced soreness in his surgically repaired elbow. However, things have gone smoothly since that initial setback, as he has made four rehab starts in July between the Rookie-League Arizona Complex, High-A Lake County and Double-A Akron. Bieber threw 57 pitches in his last rehab start and is on track to make his season debut sometime in August. Bieber had spent his entire seven-year career with the Guardians. The Blue Jays currently have five starting pitchers – Kevin Gausman, Chris Bassitt, Jose Berrios, Eric Lauer and Max Scherzer – but a team can never have enough pitching. If Bieber could return anywhere close to his Cy Young form, the Blue Jays would have added another ace to their rotation. He won the award in 2020 during the coronavirus-impacted season. The Blue Jays are 64-46 and hold a four-game lead over the New York Yankees for first place in the American League East. Stephen, 22, was the Blue Jays second-round pick in the 2024 MLB Draft out of Mississippi State. Across three minor league levels this season, Stephen has thrived. Stephen has a 9-1 record with a 2.06 in 17 starts and 91.2 innings this season. The Guardians are 54-54, but they are nine games behind the Detroit Tigers for first place in the American League Central. They are rumored to also trade other key players on their roster before the trade deadline.
