Penang Port Invests RM37 Mln In Four Hybrid RTG Cranes To Enhance Efficiency, Sustainability
GEORGE TOWN, June 23 (Bernama) -- Penang Port Sdn Bhd has invested US$7.88 million (RM37 million) in acquiring four new hybrid rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes from Mitsui E & S Co Ltd, Japan, to enhance operational efficiency and promote environmental sustainability.
In a statement today, Penang Port said the addition of these four new hybrid RTGs brings the total to 11 hybrid units as part of the 31-unit RTG fleet and this significant upgrade underscores its commitment to innovation.
Penang Port began its hybrid RTG journey with three units in 2019 before adding four more in 2020.

'Hybrid RTG cranes play a crucial role in modern port operations by efficiently loading and stacking intermodal containers with impressive accuracy. What sets these machines apart is their innovative use of both diesel and electric battery power.
'We anticipate a 50 per cent reduction in fuel consumption and emissions with the addition of these hybrid cranes, leading to significant cost savings compared to traditional diesel-powered RTGs,' the statement said.
Meanwhile, chief executive officer Datuk Sasedharan Vasudevan said the investment underscores Penang Port's commitment to enhancing operational efficiency while fostering a greener and more sustainable port environment.
'With these new RTGs, we will significantly improve our container handling capacity, optimise our operations, and most importantly, reduce our carbon footprint, paving the way for a healthier future.
'The arrival of four hybrid RTG cranes represents a significant advancement for Penang Port and the communities it serves,' he added.
In addition to the operational benefits, this initiative aligns closely with Penang Port's strong environmental, social, and governance (ESG) sustainability goals. It encompasses aspects of the port's operations, from minimising carbon footprint and improving waste management practices to optimising resource utilisation.

Construction of second batch of LMS vessels on schedule, says Defence Minister
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled (centre) at the Istanbul Shipyard to survey the construction of the second batch of three Littoral Mission Ships (LMS) by Turkish defence firm Savunma Teknolojileri Muhendislik (STM). - Photo: Bernama ISTANBUL: The construction of the second batch of three Littoral Mission Ships (LMS) by Turkish defence firm Savunma Teknolojileri Muhendislik (STM) at the Istanbul Shipyard is proceeding according to schedule, says Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin. The Defence Minister said the first LMS is expected to be launched next April, followed by the second in June 2026 and the third in August 2026. "The construction of the second batch of LMS marks the first procurement following the signing of the government-to-government (G2G) memorandum of understanding (MOU) for defence acquisitions during my official maiden visit to Turkiye in June last year. "The progress of this construction is definitely important because it serves as the benchmark for the new procurement approach by the government," he told reporters after surveying the ship construction at the Istanbul Shipyard here on Thursday (July 24). He was accompanied by Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) chief Admiral Tan Sri Zulhelmy Ithnain and a delegation from the Defence Ministry. He said that after the vessels are launched into the water, they will enter a critical phase involving integrating various systems to be used on board, before Malaysia takes full delivery of the three ships by the end of 2027. He added that the procurement of the three LMS vessels will be followed by an Industrial Collaboration Programme (ICP), which has the potential to significantly impact the local defence industry, including through technology transfer that will be finalised by the end of this year. He said that Turkiye, before becoming a producer of defence products, also underwent a process of technology transfer from other countries before successfully developing its defence industry. "Malaysia has the same aspiration. Hopefully, the good bilateral relations and strategic collaboration between Malaysia and Turkiye can help propel the local defence industry, and at the same time, strengthen national sovereignty," he said. The second batch of LMS vessels for the Navy is based on the Ada-class corvette design developed by STM, which is equipped for multiple roles. Each of the ships will also be armed with ATMACA surface-to-surface missiles and air defence systems. Earlier, Mohamed Khaled attended the International Defence Industry Fair (IDEF) 2025, which is one of the world's prestigious defence exhibitions, organised by Turkiye's Ministry of National Defence (MOND) at the Istanbul Expo Centre. - Bernama

S&P 500 and Nasdaq notch record closes
NEW York: The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq notched record high closes on Thursday as robust results from Google parent Alphabet fuelled optimism about other heavyweight artificial intelligence stocks, while Tesla slumped after the electric vehicle maker's results disappointed investors. Alphabet rose 1% as the search giant's results boosted confidence that heavy investment in a race to dominate AI technology is paying off. Shares of Microsoft, Nvidia and Amazon each climbed 1% or more. The US-Japan trade deal and recent signs of progress in talks with the European Union also fuelled Wall Street's gains. "Investors are feeling optimistic about trade negotiations, about the economy, the trend in inflation, as well as the better-than-expected Q2 earnings reports," said Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at CFRA Research. Tesla tumbled 8.2% after CEO Elon Musk warned of a "few rough quarters" as the US government cuts support for electric vehicle makers. The stock has fallen around 25% so far in 2025. UnitedHealth fell 4.8% after the insurer revealed it was cooperating with a Department of Justice probe into its Medicare practices, following reports of both criminal and civil investigations. IBM dropped almost 8% after its second-quarter results fell flat with investors, hampered by disappointing sales in its core software division. Honeywell fell 6.2% despite topping Wall Street's expectations and raising its annual outlook. The S&P 500 crept up 0.07% to end the session at 6,363.35 points. The Nasdaq gained 0.18% to 21,057.96 points, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.70% to 44,693.91 points. Volume on US exchanges was relatively heavy, with 19.9 billion shares traded, compared to an average of 17.8 billion shares over the previous 20 sessions. Eight of the 11 S&P 500 sector indices declined, led lower by consumer discretionary, down 1.23%, followed by a 0.75% loss in materials. American Airlines tumbled nearly 10% after the carrier forecast a big third-quarter loss, hurt by sluggish domestic travel demand. US President Donald Trump's global trade war has created the biggest uncertainty for the airline industry since the Covid-19 pandemic. Markets were also monitoring Trump's planned visit to the Federal Reserve's headquarters on Thursday, following months of the president criticising Fed chair Jerome Powell for interest rates that Trump views as too high. With the Fed widely expected to hold rates steady at next week's meeting, traders see a 60% chance of a September rate cut, according to CME's FedWatch tool. A US Labor Department report showed jobless claims last week fell to 217,000 – well below estimates – signaling continued resilience in the job market. US business activity gained momentum in July, but companies hiked prices on goods and services, fueling economists' predictions of faster inflation in the months ahead, largely driven by rising import tariffs. Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones within the S&P 500 by a 1.3-to-one ratio. The S&P 500 posted 46 new highs and 6 new lows; the Nasdaq recorded 81 new highs and 44 new lows. — Reuters
