Hameed, addressing the crowd, reaffirmed his stance, stating, 'We stand firm on our decision to resign,' and announced his resignation as president of the Congress district minority cell. Following his lead, leaders Abdul Rauf and M S Mohammed also submitted their resignations, amplifying the call for a broader resignation movement within the party's minority wing.
According to sources, frustration over the Karnataka government's failure to address communal violence in Dakshina Kannada led to a chaotic Congress minority cell meeting on Thursday afternoon. Former mayor Ashraf resigned as vice president of the Dakshina Kannada District Congress and from the party on May 28.
Ashraf criticised the Congress-led state government for not curbing alleged Sangh Parivar-led harassment, including hate speeches, wrongful arrests, and the murder of Abdul Rehman. His resignation sparked a wave of others, reflecting deep discontent with the Congress leadership's inaction despite repeated community appeals.
The May 29 meeting was called to formalise protests against the state's handling of communal tensions, particularly Abdul Rehman's killing, which district minister Dinesh Gundu Rao attributed to personal enmity, a claim Ashraf dismissed, alleging misinformation by officials. The decision to begin resignations sent a clear message to the state government and Congress high command, setting a charged atmosphere for the meeting, where demands for accountability and swift action escalated into disorder.

The Opposition's decision to move a motion to remove Justice Yashwant Varma in the Rajya Sabha was set rolling on July 15 at the Congress Parliamentary Strategy meeting, where the lead Opposition party took a call that the government should not be allowed exclusive ownership of the motion, aimed at uncovering the alleged corruption in the judiciary. Wads of half-burnt currency notes were found at the official residence of Justice Varma in Delhi when a fire broke out there on March 14. At the meeting, according to those aware of the discussion, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, senior leader and Rajya Sabha member P. Chidambaram and the party's chief whip in the Rajya Sabha Jairam Ramesh among others felt that Rajya Sabha should not stand as a mute spectator to the process. The government had reached out to all sides for a bipartisan motion to be moved in the Lok Sabha. The Congress then started the process of collecting signatures from the other Opposition parties. 'This process had been going on since Thursday (July 17, 2025) last week,' a senior Congress leader said. Barring the Trinamool Congress and Samajwadi Party MPs, who were not available for various reasons, other Opposition leaders signed the motion. A total of 63 signatures were collected. The motion was submitted around 2 p.m. to Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar's office, who, around 4 p.m., informed the house about it. He went on to describe the procedure, asking the Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha, P.C. Mody, to enquire with the Lok Sabha about the submission of a similar motion and proceed accordingly. In cases where the motion is submitted on the same day in the two Houses, a joint statutory committee is constituted to investigate the matter. A notice for the removal of a judge has to be signed by no fewer than 100 members in the Lok Sabha and 50 in the Rajya Sabha. The three-page motion had signatures from members of the Opposition. It sought Justice Verma's removal on three grounds – 'financial misconduct and lack of transparency', 'unnatural conduct and concealment' and 'breach of public trust and probity', quoting from the Supreme Court's internal committee's report that investigated the incident. It said that the Supreme Court report proved misbehaviour on the part of Justice Varma as defined by Article 124 (4) of the Constitution and thus recommended his removal and further investigations by a statutory committee. At 4.30 p.m., the Business Advisory Committee, which convened minutes after the Chairman's announcement on the floor of the House, Leader of the House J.P. Nadda and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju were missing. When Chairman Mr. Dhankhar enquired about their absence, Union Minister L. Murugan reportedly informed that they had been called away for an urgent meeting. Mr. Dhankhar had articulated both in public and private that the cash recovery at Justice Varma's residence required a thorough probe into where and how the money came from. He was also, till his last day in office, on Monday (July 21, 2025), authenticating the signatures on a motion moved by the Opposition in December last year against the Allahabad High Court Judge Justice Shekhar Yadav for allegedly making a hate speech. On Sunday (July 20, 2025), according to sources, he met Aam Aadmi Party MP Raghav Chadha and, on Monday (July 20, 2025), Congress MP G.C. Chandrashekhar to get them to authenticate their signatures. He had informed the house on Monday (July 20, 2025) that the process of verification of the signatures is going on. Later, around 5 p.m., he told an Opposition MP that 51 out of the 55 signatures had been authenticated. The motion thus met the minimum required number of members to be accepted.

The Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) on Tuesday dismissed the appeal made by the Congress and upheld an income‑tax demand of Rs 199.15 crore. It also rejected the party's argument that late returns should be treated like charitable trusts under Section 12A, stressing that political parties must strictly file within the statutory deadline. The ITAT found that the Congress violated two critical conditions under Section 13A, which governs tax exemptions for political parties. It noted that the Congress filed its income tax return on February 2, 2019, missing the mandatory extended deadline of December 31, 2018, as specified under Section 139(4B). The Congress received cash contributions of a total of Rs 14.49 lakh from various donors, with individual donations exceeding the permissible limit of Rs 2,000 under Section 13A provisions. While the party provided donor names and PAN details – mostly from its own elected MLAs and MPs – the tribunal ruled that the cash payment method itself violated the law. The bench, comprising judicial member Satbeer Singh Godara and accountant member M Balaganesh, stated that Section 13A represents a special exemption that must be applied with strict adherence to all conditions, with any breach rendering the entire exemption invalid. The tribunal dismissed an attempt by the Congress to distinguish between 'voluntary contributions" and 'donations," noting that the party itself made no such differentiation in its records or Election Commission filings. Additionally, the ITAT rejected the party's plea that only surplus funds after expenses should be taxed, instead ruling that once Section 13A exemption is denied, all voluntary contributions become taxable income. Beyond the primary tax demand, the tribunal also upheld additional financial penalties including interest charges under sections 234A, 234B, and 234C totaling over R 35 crore, plus a Rs 10,000 fee under Section 234F for delayed filing. This brings the total financial liability to approximately Rs 234 crore, representing a substantial burden for the opposition party. The Congress had previously appealed to the CIT (appeals) but was unsuccessful, with that appeal being dismissed in March 2023. Congress celebrates SC relief for CM's wife in Muda land case
Mysuru: Congress activists celebrated the Supreme Court's ruling granting relief to chief minister Siddaramaiah's wife, Parvathi, in the Muda land compensation case. The celebrations included special pujas at the 101 Ganapati Temple, where workers held portraits of Siddaramaiah and Parvathi, offered prayers, and chanted "Satyameva Jayate. " They distributed sweets as a mark of celebration.
