Adoor Gopalakrishnan Sparks Row At Kerala Film Conclave Over Remarks On Women, SC Filmmakers
During his speech, Adoor expressed concern that the Rs 1.5 crore allocated for SC and ST filmmakers could be misused. 'I had earlier pointed out to the Chief Minister that this amount could lead to corruption. But no corrective action has been taken,' he said. He suggested that instead of awarding Rs 1.5 crore to a single filmmaker, it would be more effective to support three filmmakers with Rs 50 lakh each.
He further said that structured training was essential before providing such financial aid. 'Those selected from the SC community should undergo at least three months of intensive training by experts to learn budgeting and basic film production skills,' he said.
In a remark that drew strong reactions, Adoor said, 'Don't give funds just because someone is a woman,' though he added that several talented women filmmakers are now emerging.
He criticised the current approach of allocating funds, arguing that public money collected through taxes should not be distributed arbitrarily.
'Many people believe that just by applying, they are entitled to receive money to make a film. That's a wrong notion,' he said.
Several filmmakers, including Dr Biju, objected to his remarks during the session and attempted to respond, but Adoor continued his address uninterrupted. He also took a swipe at the recent protests at the K.R. Narayanan National Institute of Visual Science and Arts, claiming that the agitation was aimed at undermining attempts to restore discipline at the institute.
According to him, the protests ultimately contributed to the institution's decline. Adoor concluded by reiterating that government funding should not be directed towards commercial ventures but should promote quality cinema.
His remarks have sparked backlash from sections of the film industry and civil society, with many criticising the tone and timing of his statements at a conclave aimed at shaping inclusive film policy.

EPS promises 24-hour three-phase power for farmers if voted to power
Traders who took part in the meeting expressed concern over GST and tax burdens. Palaniswami said 24,000 waterbodies under the Rural Development Department and 6,000 of 14,000 under the Public Works Department were desilted during the AIADMK regime for which a sum of Rs 1,240 crore was allocated. Check dams were also built to prevent freshwater from draining into the sea. Campaigning in Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai, Palaniswami cited the death of Congress district president Jayakumar Dhanasingh and the killing of retired SI Zakhir Hussain, and criticised the government. 'Zakhir was hacked to death after he made a video appeal to Chief Minister M K Stalin seeking protection. Everyone saw it, except the chief minister. Had Stalin acted immediately, Zakhir might have been alive today. Jayakumar was found charred to death with his hands and legs tied. Till date, the police is unable to crack the case. TNCC president K Selvaperunthagai is not questioning all this,' Palaniswami said. However, the AIADMK leader did not talk about the recent 'honour killing' of Kavin Selvaganesh.

Ghose panel faults KCR and team
Hyderabad: The Justice PC Ghose Commission of inquiry into the Kaleshwaram project has held former chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, former irrigation minister T Harish Rao , former Finance minister E Rajender and a bunch of senior officials, including the then Irrigation special Chief Secretary SK Joshi, responsible for the colossal waste of public money in the construction of the Kaleshwaram project. The Commission has observed in its report that Rao was directly and indirectly responsible for the irregularities in the project, right from its planning and construction to operation and maintenance of the barrages which are part of the project, sources said. The Commission pointed fingers also at former irrigation minister T Harish Rao, a nephew of KCR. A committee of experts had advised against taking up the Kaleshwaram project, but the BRS regime had 'intentionally suppressed' the report, they said. The sources said the officials had prepared a 60-page summary of the report, which runs into 665 pages. The summary mentioned the names of KCR 32 times, Harish Rao 19 times and former minister Eatala Rajender five times. Rajender is now a BJP Lok Sabha member. The report found Rajender, who was finance minister during the BRS regime, to be negligent, the sources said. Briefing the press after the Cabinet meeting, the Chief Minister, apparently enthused by the damning evidence against former chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and ex-ministers, said that since the report was prepared by an independent judicial commission, the question of resorting to politics of vengeance did not arise. Going by the findings of the Commission highlighted in the report, the government will initiate action against those who were involved in the 'embezzlement of public money in the construction of the Kaleshwaram project.' Amplifying the key findings, Revanth Reddy said that former chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao redesigned the Pranahita -Chevella project and constructed Medigadda, Annaram and Sundilla barrages which were damaged within three months of the construction of the Kaleshwaram project. Although an expert committee had submitted a report against Kaleshwaram, KCR chose to go ahead with the construction of the barrages 'without any planning'. The Chief Minister recounted that, ahead of the Assembly elections, the Congress had promised that, if voted to power, the government would order a probe into the collapse of the Kaleshwaram project. Accordingly, the state government constituted a judicial commission to investigate the misuse of Rs one lakh crore in the construction of the project. Revanth Reddy said that the cabinet reviewed the 665-page Ghose Commission report as well as a summary of the report submitted after vetting by a three-member official committee.
