1 2 New Delhi: A year after the death of three civil services aspirants at Rau's IAS Study Circle in Old Rajendra Nagar, the family of Nevin Dalvin, one of the trio who was drowned in the flooded basement library, is transforming its grief into a memorial. Dalvin's memory will live on, symbolically, in a library bearing his name in Thiruvananthapuram. The library will be located at the family home in the Kerala capital and will not only house a collection of books, but also exhibit the young man's personal belongings. The purpose of the family initiative is to create a space that fosters learning and provide access to books, study materials and other educational resources, particularly to the underprivileged children and students. By offering these resources locally, the family hopes to reduce the need for students to travel long distances, especially to faraway Delhi, for their studies. The family is also opening a hall. "Scheduled to be inaugurated on the anniversary of the tragedy on July 27, the hall will be available to underprivileged families for holding functions," Dr Lanclet, Dalvin's mother, told TOI. He added, "After the incident, I personally know three-four youngsters who were so disturbed that they moved from Delhi and returned to UP to prepare for their civil services exams from there. " Dharmender expressed frustration, saying, "If stronger and more decisive legal action were taken, it could have set a precedent. Unfortunately, justice remains incomplete."

Artists fume as new Cuttack gallery yet to be made operational
1 2 Cuttack: Nearly 11 months after its inauguration, the Cuttack Art Gallery remains closed, much to the disappointment of artists and cultural enthusiasts in the city. The gallery was inaugurated on Aug 31, 2024, by Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan on the occasion of 'Self-Governance Day'. Constructed at a cost of over Rs 2 crore, the gallery was built on the first floor of the Town Hall, covering 5,585sq ft. Equipped with modern amenities such as a lift, toilets and drinking water facilities, it was meant to be a vibrant space for exhibitions, workshops and cultural exchange. Initially, there was a proposal to form an artists' committee to manage the gallery, but the idea didn't materialise. "Several times, we had discussions with CMC to run the gallery, but there was no proper response. The space can be used for academic activities related to arts and crafts, which would attract participants and create a vibrant art culture," said Rabi Narayan Rath, a city-based artist. "But it's disheartening to witness the gallery remain closed since its inauguration," he added. Sudeshna Das, a Cuttack-based painter, said, "City artists were thrilled at the idea of finally having a dedicated gallery space. Vitthalapur beckons faithful from across state for Ashadhi Ekadashi
Bicholim: The Shri Vitthal Rakhumai Satyabhama Temple at Vitthalapur, Sanquelim, is set to celebrate Ashadhi Ekadashi on Sunday. Temple purohit Ramapati Pitre said the shrine's history spans more than 550 years, and the celebration attracts devotees from across the state. 'It is said that after he offered prayers to Lord Vitthal at Pandharpur, the idols of the deities Vitthal, Rakhumai, and Satyabhama fell into his lap,' Pitre said. 'These very idols were brought to Vitthalapur in Sanquelim by some devotees and were installed at a place called Pandharini, 3-4km from this temple.' Since the original site was in a dense forest, devotees faced hardships in approaching the idols to pay obeisance. 'Around that time, a businessman called Porob had a vision that his ship out on the sea would sink. Praying for his ship's safety, he vowed to construct a temple of Lord Vitthal at Vitthalapur,' Pitre said. 'His ship returned safely. He then went on to build a wooden temple. That structure deteriorated over time.' Pitre explained that eventually, a daughter from the Rane family married into the Shinde family of Gwalior, and constructed the temple that stands today. The priest said that the temple's idols are similar to those at Pandharpur. Besides, the temples of Lords Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh, Maruti, and Goddess Bhagwati make the location a Panchayatan Devasthan, a sanctified home to five deities. The Ashadhi Ekadashi festival concludes on the day of Trayodashi during which the Gopal Kalo or Chikhal Kalo festival is celebrated on the banks of the Valvonti river. During this festival, devotees are served ayurvedic juice in the form of tirtha, which is believed to be helpful in curing some diseases. As festivities along the river approach, Mayem MLA Premendra Shet said the banks of the Valvanti will get a new look at the cost of Rs 2 crore, under the aegis of the Goa Tourism Development Corporation. He said work will begin after the rains in two phases. For now, Ashadhi Ekadashi has been celebrated on the premises of Dr BK Hedgewar Vidhyamandir, Karapur-Tisk, with pomp and fervour. As many as 600 students went on a walking pilgrimage from the school to Lord Vitthal temple. Students of govt primary school at Maulingem also undertook the pilgrimage.
