Vedanta's Matri Van initiative for a greener tomorrow
In Odisha's fast-growing industrial landscape, Vedanta Aluminium has emerged as a beacon of proactive environmental stewardship. While the company consistently champions sustainability through diverse initiatives round the year, it has recently achieved an important milestone through its Matri Van initiative. Having pledged to plant 1 lakh saplings in Jharsuguda, Vedanta has now announced the successful completion of this significant goal.
Interestingly, the company has achieved this feat within the span of a year, a testament to its commitment to ecological restoration and preservation. The Matri Van initiative had started in July 2024 with a mass plantation drive aligned with the government of India's 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign.
Organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), the event saw several district officials, Vedanta employees and schoolchildren come together to plant over 2,000 saplings on a reclaimed ash storage area at Kapumal in Jharsuguda district.
The successful completion of one lakh sapling plantation target underscores Vedanta Aluminium's dedication to enhancing Jharsuguda's green cover and fostering diverse biodiversity in the region. It is set to have a significant impact on the local environment by contributing towards better air quality, more carbon absorption and wider natural habitats, while also highlighting the potential of transforming previously utilised land into thriving green spaces.
This landmark achievement is the outcome of Vedanta Aluminium's continuous focus on enabling sustainability efforts.

RAIPUR: Durg district has launched major community-led initiatives to boost water conservation and green cover. Over 1.04 lakh saplings were planted under 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam,' and thousands of soak pits, trenches, and recharge structures have been built voluntarily, reflecting a strong push for sustainable environmental practices without government funding. On July 23, a district-level programme was organised at Gram Panchayat Kodiya in Durg block. Elected representatives have been instrumental in promoting water conservation under the slogans "Ek Sohkhta Santan Ke Naam" (One Soak Pit in the Name of a Child) and "More Gaon Mor Pani" (My Village, My Water). These initiatives encourage residents to construct soak pits and recharge structures. Under the guidance of District Collector Abhijit Singh and District Panchayat CEO Bajrang Kumar Dubey, the "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" (One Tree in the Name of Mother) campaign has successfully seen 1,04,111 saplings planted in 27,883 Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana houses across the district. Beneficiaries planted a maximum of four and a minimum of two saplings per house voluntarily, without government funding. The district has also completed construction of 265 new water percolation recharge shafts in borewells, allowing rainwater to directly replenish groundwater. Furthering water security, the district aims to construct 34,000 water absorption trenches. As of today, 5,800 trenches have been completed. In areas with significant water accumulation, 300 large soak structures have been built in the first phase. Additionally, villagers have voluntarily constructed 2,500 recharge pits near schools and homes.

Chief minister Nayab Singh Saini on Wednesday announced an ambitious target of planting 2.10 crore saplings across the state this year, urging every family to plant at least one tree during the monsoon season in the interest of environmental conservation and a sustainable future. To ensure effective implementation and increase forest cover, Saini announced that all plantations initiated by the forest department would be geo-tagged and regularly monitored using drones for up to five years. The chief minister also released two booklets on herbal vatika and nature trails, aimed at promoting eco-tourism in Morni. He stressed that environmental conservation is a collective responsibility, urging individuals to nurture saplings like their own children for at least five years. He also mentioned the 'Pranavayu Devta Pension Scheme', which provides ₹3,000 annually for the care of trees over 75 years old. So far, ₹1 crore has been deposited into the accounts of guardians of 3,800 trees under this scheme. Additionally, he spoke about the Green Aravalli Action Plan in South Haryana—a joint initiative with the central government—to be implemented across four states. Environment, forest, and wildlife minister Rao Narbir Singh emphasised that Van Mahotsav should be a people's movement, not just a ceremonial event.
