It is a decisive repositioning with only five percent of the same companies demanding a total return to the office just two years ago in 2023. Now 54 percent of companies that make up the Fortune 100 — the biggest companies in America — are fully in-office and 41 percent are flexible. Larger companies are leading the charge, with smaller operations still favoring flexible work, the latest data has revealed. Starbucks has been among the recent household names that have demanded its corporate workers return to its Seattle headquarters for at least four days a week. Google and Amazon have also pushed their employees to come back to in-person work, citing alleged productivity benefits. Other than the biggest companies in the country, most firms are actually maintaining their flexible working policies. Some 51 percent of employees with remote-capable jobs were working hybrid in 2025, down slightly from 52 percent in 2023, according to recent data from Gallup Poll. The story looks similar for those working completely remotely, with 28 percent working exclusively at home now compared to 29 percent in 2023. Experts argue that the biggest companies in America are pushing for workers to return to the office even if they lose talent because they can afford to do so. It comes as separate data from JLL revealed that Gen Z, who have been characterized by many as work shy, are actually the most eager to get back into the office. Those born between 1997 and 2012 attend the office 3.1 days a week, compared to older age groups who show up between 2.5 and 2.7 days a week, a survey from the company found. Many Gen Z employees have only known remote or hybrid work, having entered the workforce during or after the pandemic. Prominent voices such as JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon have warned that homeworking is holding younger workers back. 'The young generation is being damaged by this,' he said in a leaked recording of a private meeting. 'They're being left behind socially, in sharing ideas, and meeting people.'

Hospitals face paying £8,000 a shift to cover striking doctors
Hospitals could be forced to pay as much as £8,000 to cover the shift of a single striking doctor if multiple consultants are needed to staff some wards overnight. Advice on the British Medical Association (BMA) website says consultants asked to cover shifts overnight in a hospital should have a second consultant on call with them to cover higher-level duties. According to the BMA's rate card, for each junior doctor's overnight shift during the strike, two consultants in London would cover it for £334 per hour, or £4,008 for an overnight shift, totalling £8,016 for both consultants. Hospital leaders described it as 'worrying' and said the funds needed to cover a striking doctor were 'unacceptable'. One junior doctor, who is not striking in this round of industrial action but did last year, said some consultants were 'slower' at day-to-day activities on the ward, which sometimes led to multiple consultants covering one overnight shift. 'The type of things that you are doing overnight [are] quite different to the job that you do as a consultant during the day [but] something that the junior, the resident doctors, core and foundation trainees do all the time. Some of these might be quite practical and logistical things that if you're a consultant [you are] not physically used to doing on the computer system. They're the kind of things you need to do quickly overnight,' the doctor said. While consultants could very ably clinically assess patients, they might be 'a bit slow' at the tasks needed overnight, the doctor suggested. 'Sometimes they feel safer, I think … having more of them on because, more from a speed perspective,' the doctor added. • How much do NHS doctors really earn? Here are the facts BMA guidance says some consultants may have 'concerns' about working on wards. ''Acting down' to provide cover for absent resident doctor colleagues may involve tasks that you have not had to perform for many years, and you may have concerns about the ability to carry out certain tasks involved in ward work,' the advice states. 'A consultant has a professional obligation to act within their sphere of competence. As such, you need to be clear with your employer that you do not feel that you can safely and competently perform the work required and that doing [so] may expose you to enhanced risk of medico-legal consequences. If your employer refuses to take the necessary action to make alternative arrangements […] then, as above, you will need to follow our guidance on raising concerns.' One hospital executive said that while the hospital had not used more than one consultant to cover shifts, the cost of cover ran 'into the millions' and further cuts to NHS services might be needed as a result. 'The cost of consultant cover during the period, which runs into millions of pounds, [is a] huge amount of money that is unfunded. It's well publicised that there's a real tension at the moment in the NHS between safe timely services and financial viability,' said the executive, who did not wish to be named. • Striking doctor called off picket line to treat 'very sick' babies 'We're trying to navigate our way along that. Inevitably, if we accumulate debt as a result of paying consultants more to pick up these shifts, that money is not going to be funded by our NHS. So it would be down for each individual NHS organisation to make further cuts to offset the cost of the strikes.' Saffron Cordery, the deputy chief executive of NHS Providers, said: 'Trust leaders are working to minimise the harm and disruption caused by the strike. Ensuring adequate cover to keep patients safe is expensive and there is no extra money to cover this so the unexpected cost is bound to impact on the services they can provide. 'It's really worrying to see the demands for excessive rates to provide this cover. The withdrawal of labour by one staff group should not be seen as a financial opportunity for another. That is totally unacceptable.'

Trader Joe's is continuing its aggressive expansion. It is adding another 30 stores — including two that just opened in Westminster, Colorado, and Northridge, California. New locations are also on the way in Arizona, California, Connecticut, Washington DC, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, and Virginia. These are on top other planned openings, including at least a dozen new stores across 10 states this year. One recent opening puzzled locals because it was less than 100 yards from an existing Trader Joe's. The grocer, founded in 1967 and famous for its cult‑favorite snacks and quirky atmosphere, already has more than 600 stores across 43 states. It is in an expansion battle with rival Aldi, America's fastest-growing grocery chain. German‑owned Aldi — founded in 1946 — operates more than 2,500 locations across 40 US states and plans to open 225 new stores this year alone, on top of the 105 it opened last year. Growth for Trader Joe's and Aldi comes as rival Kroger shutters 60 locations nationwide. It still dwarfs Trader Joe's, and has 3,000 stores and is pouring $45 million into opening 30 new stores and upgrading others in Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky. Trader Joe's new Northridge store kicked off its grand opening with a July 21 ribbon‑cutting ceremony, fan‑favorite snack samples, and free reusable tote bags. The location features murals by California State University, Northridge students, part of the chain's effort to make each store a true neighborhood fixture. In Westminster, Mayor Nancy McNally hailed the city's first Trader Joe's, which opens today. 'People are just very excited about being able to go to Trader Joe's,' she said. Kroger is planning to open 30 new stores in the next 18 months, and upgrade 16 stores in Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. The $45 million investment in this plan will also include a new fuel center at a store in Springfield. Besides openings, Kroger has opted to compete with Trader Joe's by giving its customers access to its Weekly Digital Deals through in-store flyers. In the meantime, Trader Joe's will continue to lure in customers by continuing to surprise customers with viral bags, and introduce desserts like the Dubai-style pistachio dark chocolate bar.
