HUGE football star and manager 'to star on the upcoming season of Strictly Come Dancing'

Daily Mail22-06-2025

Football icon Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is reportedly set to appear on the upcoming season of Strictly Come Dancing.
The former Chelsea and Netherlands striker and ex-England coach, 53, is believed to have signed up to the BBC flagship show, according to The Sun.
A source told the publication: 'Jimmy has a huge fanbase from his years playing in the Premier League and is a very likeable character.
'Show producers are always keen to book a retired footballer as it gets footie fans tuning into the series and becoming unlikely fans of the show.
'Jimmy has a competitive edge and is going to get his head in the game.'
The father-of-four was a professional player with Leeds and Middlebrough for two decades before he retied in 2008.
MailOnline has contacted representatives for Strictly Come Dancing for comment.
The rumour comes weeks after Strictly bosses announced the professional lineup for this year's show and revealed there will be two brand new dancers joining.
Dianne Buswell, who lifted the glitter ball in December with Chris McCausland, will be joining Nadiya Bychkova, Karen Hauer, Katya Jones, Neil Jones, Nikita Kuzmin, Gorka Marquez, Luba Mushtuk and Jowita Przystal in returning to the dance floor this September.
They will be joined by Johannes Radebe, Aljaž Škorjanec, Nancy Xu, Lauren Oakley, Michelle Tsiakkas and Vito Coppola who will all take to the floor once more alongside two new stars, who will be announced closer to the time.
Amy Dowden, who pulled out in the opening weeks of last year's show due to a foot injury, will also be back on Strictly for 2025, as will Carlos Gu and Kai Widdrington, who didn't have a celebrity partner last year.
Despite rumours that he might be making a return after missing out on last year's series, Giovanni Pernice will not be heading back to the ballroom this time around.
Sarah James, Executive Producer, BBC Studios said : 'The excitement is already building ahead of the new series and in addition to welcoming back our fantastic returning Pros, we are looking forward to welcoming two brand new Professional Dancers to the line up who will help bring another unforgettable series of dazzling dance and loads more besides to viewers later in 2025.'
As well as the pros taking part in the competition itself, all of them will be taking to the floor each week in group routines.

MailOnline previously revealed that Strictly Come Dancing professional Karen will return to the BBC show this year.
It was rumoured that the programme's longest-serving dancer was axed by bosses, sparking an 'ageism' row among the cast but it has been confirmed that the star, 42, will be back as normal when the series returns in September.
Karen, who joined the lineup in 2012, is yet to win the glitter ball trophy but has reached several finals including with celebrity partners Made In Chelsea 's Jamie Laing and former TOWIE star Mark Wright.
Last year, Karen was partnered with former footballer Paul Merson, 57, but the pair were eliminated in week five and the previous season the dancer performed with DJ Eddie Kadi.
The Venezuelan, who was previously married to ex-pro Kevin Clifton, returns to the show alongside the likes of Strictly favourites Gorka Marquez, Johannes Radebe, and Jowita Przystal, who reached the semifinal stages last year with Pete Wicks.
In November, it was reported that Karen was at 'risk' of losing her place on the show because of her age when dancers like Dianne Buswell, 35, and Michelle Tsiakkas, 29, are younger participants.
Meanwhile, Carlos Gu (pictured, left) and Kai Widdrington (right) will be returning after not appearing in the 2024 edition
Johannes Radebe (pictured, left) is back for the 2025 edition after receiving a huge spike in popularity, leading to a busy diary and will join Aljaž Škorjanec (right)
Katya Jones (pictured, left) will be joining Jowita Pryzstal (right) on the much-awaited return of Strictly this September
A TV source told MailOnline: 'Karen is a well loved and respected member of the Strictly cast and there's no way she would be axed, especially not because of her age.
'She has dedicated years to the programme and can't wait to get back in the training room with a new partner in the next coming months.'
Following speculation surrounding whether she would axed from the long running series due to being in her 40s, Karen spoke about not being 'threatened' by younger competitors.
Indeed, she said performing alongside new joiners makes her feel empowered and she is 'inspired' by the younger generation.
In February, she said: 'Of course, Strictly brings in younger female dancers. I'm the longest serving on the show, but new dancers don't threaten me - I watch them and I learn from them.
'They inspire me and build my confidence. I've become the person for them that I didn't have when I joined the show. I'm always there to help because there is a big spotlight on you on Strictly.'
As well as competing on the show with celebrity contestants Jeremy Vine, Simon Rimmer, Greg Wise and Chris Ramsey, Karen also danced with comedian Jayde Adams, which was her first female partnership.
On competing with a female for the first time in 2022, Karen said: 'I've danced with a lot of male dancers, but it's finding what works for them. This is more natural.
Luba Mushtuk (pictured, left) was partnered with Nick Knowles in 2024 while Nancy Xu (right) danced with singer Shayne Ward last year
Lauren Oakley (pictured, left) stepped in for Amy as JB Gill's partner and Michelle Tsiakkas (right) was with Jamie Borthwick last time
'It is female empowerment for me to be dancing with Jayde. I feel the most comfortable because there is that friendship.
'We are girls and we talk about everything. We cry together, we laugh together. We share so many things.
'When it comes to the dancing we are able to put that emotion into it.'
It was alleged last year that a Strictly 'cull' of the professional dancers would see a change in the lineup, with Gorka rumoured not to be coming back for the upcoming season.
Throughout his time on the show Gorka has been partnered with the likes of EastEnders actress Tameka Empson, Coronation Street star Katie McGlynn, and radio host Nikita Kanda.
In 2024, he competed with Morning Live doctor Punam Krishan and the pair impressed the judging panel with their Couples' Choice performance where they danced a Bollywood routine.
His partner Gemma Atkinson starred on Strictly in 2017, which is how the couple first met, and the fitness model reached the final, narrowly missing out to Joe McFadden and his partner Katya for the glitter ball trophy.
It was alleged last year that a Strictly 'cull' of the professional dancers would see a change in the lineup, with Gorka Marquez rumoured not to be coming back for the upcoming season
The World Latin Champion, who started dancing at the age of 12, landed a new role earlier this year on the judging panel for the Spanish version of Strictly.
He's also been up and down the country performing with fellow pro dancer Karen on their Speakeasy tour.
Gemma has admitted the time she finds most difficult as a mother is when Gorka is rehearsing for Strictly, saying his intense work schedule means he often isn't at their family home in Manchester.
She said: 'He's never here. It's Strictly from July to December. If they get a partner, they're based where their partner is in the week. Obviously London at the weekend.'
In recent years, the Strictly pro lineup has seen Italian dancers Graziano Di Prima and Giovanni be axed following complaints about their conduct in the training room.
Giovanni faced bullying accusations from former celebrity partner Amanda Abbington while Graziano 'kicked' ex-Love Island star Zara McDermott during rehearsals.
There were also reports of a 'mass cull' with producers keen to revamp the Strictly pro cast.

Ireland omissions 'still kill you inside'

By Nick Timoney's own admission, his last Ireland cap was "a long time ago now".The most consistent performer in an inconsistent Ulster team, the 29-year-old has found the Test game a tougher nut to making his debut for Andy Farrell's side against the USA in July 2021, the back row was a late inclusion for that November's Test against Argentina - so late, in fact, that he was sat in his house in Belfast on the morning of the game - and then started a year later against being in various squads over recent years, including touring parties to New Zealand and South Africa, he has not featured since that game three Autumns has consistently selected three from Josh van der Flier, Jack Conan, Peter O'Mahony and Caelan Doris as his loose forward trio, with the odd man out providing impact off the with the former pair away with the British and Irish Lions, O'Mahony retired, and Doris injured, there are rare opportunities to impress for back row hopefuls in Test matches against Georgia on Saturday and Portugal a week later."I'd be lying if I said there weren't times where I was frustrated. I certainly have had times where I feel like I'm incredibly close to it, and I've felt like if I had a chance, I would've taken it and run with it," said Timoney. "I still feel that way, but at the same time, Irish Rugby's not in the business of just dishing out caps because you've had a good game. Like he [Farrell] is still picking the best four lads for the squad, and if those lads stay fit and are playing well the whole time, I mean that's just the way it goes." The likes of Cian Prendergast, Gavin Coombes and Max Deegan are other back row options in a summer squad that will be led by Paul O'Connell with usual head coach Farrell on Lions duty. All have had their own struggles earning selection ahead of Ireland's established options despite impressing for their respective provinces. "It can be tough because, being a realist, you come into a lot of camps and you know that you're not necessarily top of the pecking order," Timoney continued."All the other lads are desperate to play, and then the game against England is opening the Six Nations or something like that and it still kills you inside a little bit every time you're not announced and you're not in the team."Ultimately, if you really value playing for Ireland enough, then there's no choice but to put more emphasis on getting better and working harder so that's just what I try to do."Now 29-years-old, Timoney says he will still "come into every single camp thinking this will be the one" when he makes his true international breakthrough."There's examples of it all over. There's the Deon Fouries of the world who are uncapped until 35 and [play] in a World Cup final," he added, citing the South African hooker who played 76 minutes off the bench when the Springboks won the World Cup in 2023. While his only previous experience against Saturday's opponents came as a sevens international, Timoney is well familiar with at least one star of Georgia's a youngster, he would regularly turn to YouTube for clips of the best back rows of the era. The likes of Sebastien Chabal, Sean O'Brien, David Wallace and Stephen Ferris provided regular viewing, but the rampaging Mamuka Gorgodze was a particular favourite."I have hours of Mamuka Gorgodze footage watched from when I was a kid. I used to watch a highlight video of his pretty much every week," said Timoney of the former Montpellier back row nicknamed 'Gorgodzilla'."Back in the day when you're a kid, as you would with loads of different rugby players that were in your position and you kind of looked up to, you'd look up some of their clips, their highlights, but there was a 10-minute compilation video of Mamuka Gorgodze playing a lot of European countries for Georgia, loads of clips from them playing Poland and Russia and Spain and stuff. "So I used to watch that a bit when I was younger. He was a bit of a tank." 'We know what's coming' While the decidedly more nimble Davit Niniashvili is the current star of Georgian rugby, under former Leicester Tigers and Edinburgh head coach Richard Cockerill, Timoney expects a robust challenge in Tbilisi. "They're big, they're physical, they're passionate and you're not going to get an easy game against them," he said."We've seen that over the last number of years with lots of their performances, so we know what's coming."That sort of selfish desire to impress is going to be there a little bit with a lot of people, but channelling that into the battle that's going to come is key for us."

Police 'examining' Kneecap and Bob Vylan Glastonbury performances

Rapper Bobby Vylan, of rap punk duo Bob Vylan, led crowds on the festival's West Holts Stage in chants of: 'Free, free Palestine' and: 'Death, death to the IDF'. It has been reported that police are looking into Kneecap's performance after a member of the Irish rap trio suggested fans 'start a riot' outside his bandmate's upcoming court appearance. In a post on social media, Avon and Somerset Police said: 'We are aware of the comments made by acts on the West Holts Stage at Glastonbury Festival this afternoon. READ MORE: Scottish refugee charity 'won't shut up, it will show up', says founder 'Video evidence will be assessed by officers to determine whether any offences may have been committed that would require a criminal investigation.' Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy has spoken to the BBC director general about Bob Vylan's performance, a government spokesperson said. They added: 'We strongly condemn the threatening comments made by Bob Vylan at Glastonbury. 'The Culture Secretary has spoken to the BBC Director General to seek an urgent explanation about what due diligence it carried out ahead of the Bob Vylan performance, and welcomes the decision not to re-broadcast it on BBC iPlayer.' A BBC spokesperson said: 'Some of the comments made during Bob Vylan's set were deeply offensive. During this live stream on iPlayer, which reflected what was happening on stage, a warning was issued on screen about the very strong and discriminatory language. We have no plans to make the performance available on demand.' During Kneecap's set, which was not aired by the BBC, band member Naoise O Caireallain, stage name Moglai Bap, lead chants of 'fuck Keir Starmer'. He told the crowd: 'The prime minister of your country, not mine, said he didn't want us to play, so fuck Keir Starmer.' Moglai Bap's comments come after several politicians, including the Prime Minister, called for Kneecap to be removed from the line-up. The band also led crowds in chants of 'Free Palestine', with Liam Og O hAnnaidh, stage name Mo Chara, commenting on the sheer number of flags at the festival after the field where they played had to be closed following overcrowding concerns. O hAnnaidh wore a keffiyeh during the hour-long set, while member JJ O Dochartaigh, stage name DJ Provai, wore his signature tri-coloured balaclava along with a T-shirt that said: 'We are all Palestine Action', in reference to the soon-to-be banned campaign group. The Belfast group made the headlines after O hAnnaidh, 27, was charged with allegedly displaying a flag in support of proscribed terrorist organisation Hezbollah, while saying 'up Hamas, up Hezbollah' at a gig in November last year. Last week, the rapper, who performs under the stage name Mo Chara, was cheered by hundreds of supporters as he arrived with bandmates Naoise O Caireallain and JJ O Dochartaigh at Westminster Magistrates' Court in Free Mo Chara T-shirts. He was released on unconditional bail until his next hearing at the same court on August 20.
