Balestier Khalsa bid farewell to coach with 3-2 victory over Albirex Niigata
SINGAPORE – When Balestier Khalsa coach Peter de Roo took over a Tigers side who were second-last in the Singapore Premier League (SPL) in September 2022, he introduced a style of football that combined possession with aggressive pressing during transitions.
In his final match at Bishan Stadium on May 25, his charges did well to showcase his football philosophy, giving the Dutchman the perfect parting gift with a last-gasp 3-2 victory over Albirex Niigata — a team Balestier have not beaten since 2015.
Substitute Reycredo Bukit, who scored his first goal for the club and the winner in the 95th minute, said: 'I (dedicate) my performance today to coach Peter de Roo. Thank you for giving me the experience of playing in my debut professional season.
'It's so amazing… A very good start for me, and I keep going.'
Victory against Albirex, who in 2024 transitioned from a team comprising mainly Japanese players to a local outfit, on the final day of the SPL saw Balestier finishing fourth in the league in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1997 and 1998.
De Roo, who was inundated with requests for photos and autographs by fans after the final whistle, said: 'I am proud the guys gave it their all to the end. We wanted to go out with a bang. We worked extremely hard.
'We wanted to repay the supporters for their faith in the last two and a half years. We did not do that with the best football, but as always, the boys played their socks off and worked so hard.'

The 55-year-old's swansong was all the more satisfying as he had finally broken the hoodoo against Albirex after eight losses in as many league meetings, including his first game in charge, a 3-5 home defeat.
The Tigers began the game with just a third of the possession, but patiently waited for opportunities on the transition. They opened the scoring in the 27th minute when Jared Gallagher whipped in a deep cross that was met by Anton Fase, who rose highest at the back post to power a header into the top corner.
Just before the interval, Balestier top scorer Kodai Tanaka combined with former Albirex teammate Masahiro Sugita for their second goal. Tanaka produced a neat flick into Sugita's path and the winger shimmied past a flailing Hassan Sunny before sweeping the ball home. After a brief VAR check, the players wheeled away in celebration, heading straight to the bench to share the moment with their departing coach.
The White Swans threatened to spoil the party as they pulled one back soon after the restart. A cross floated in by Arshad Shamim was nodded in by defender Koki Kawachi for his first goal of the season.
An unmarked run by Kawachi during a corner resulted in another bullet header past Balestier keeper Hafiz Ahmad to level the game.
Throwing bodies forward in search of a winner, the hosts' persistence paid off when Reycredo spotted Hassan off his line and sent a shot into the back of the net.
While disappointed with the stoppage-time loss, Albirex coach Keiji Shigetomi said: 'We wanted to finish the season with a win. We really wanted to give our fans a result they could celebrate… But I believe my boys didn't give up, and they showed our fighting spirit.'
Over at the Jurong East Stadium, Tanjong Pagar United stunned third-placed Geylang International as they played out a thrilling 3-3 draw.
Earlier on May 24, Brunei DPMM brought their SPL chapter to a close with a sixth straight win, edging Hougang United 3-2 in a hard-fought encounter, courtesy of a brace from top scorer Davis Ikaunieks (12 goals). They are set to rejoin the Malaysia Super League in the 2025/26 season.
Tampines Rovers and Lion City Sailors eked out a 0-0 stalemate on the same day after the latter rotated their outfield players for the match, retaining only substitute goalkeeper Zharfan Rohaizad from the first leg of the Singapore Cup semi-final against DPMM as they gear up for the second leg on May 27.
Analysis
Balestier showcased some attractive passages of counter-attacking play, but were nearly undone by some pedestrian defending. A late offensive onslaught paid dividends as they notched the late win for their departing coach.

PORTHCAWL – Rio Takeda and Eri Okayama of Japan shot matching rounds of 67 to take the lead after one round of the AIG Women's Open in Porthcawl, Wales on July 31. The duo are five under after one trip around Royal Porthcawl, and Miyu Yamashita made it an all-Japanese top three on the leaderboard as she turned in a four-under 68. Behind them is a 10-way tie at three under that features three more Japanese players – Chisato Iwai, Shiho Kuwaki and Mao Saigo, who won the Chevron Championship earlier this year. Takeda is vying for her first Major title after finishing in a tie for second at the US Women's Open in June. 'I had a double bogey today, but I was able to quickly change my mindset and it was good that I was able to do that,' she said. 'Other than that, I was able to save par and make some birdie putts, so I played very consistently.' Okayama's score was particularly impressive as she has been troubled by a back injury in recent months. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. 'I've barely been able to practise up until this point. I never expected to finish in this position.' Takeda shot her 67 despite committing a double bogey at the par-5 ninth, a hole where other players were making birdie or even eagle. She made seven birdies, including at four of her last seven holes. It was a similar story for Okayama, who is ranked No. 139 in the world and whose only previous wins have come in Japan. Her lone blemish was a bogey on her first hole, but she responded by making five birdies on the rest of the front nine before getting one final birdie to drop at No. 17. Yamashita's round was highlighted by a four-birdie run at Nos. 4-7, followed by eagle at No. 9. The two star players who commanded the most attention were world No. 1 Nelly Korda and British phenom Lottie Woad. Korda, still looking for her first win of any kind in 2025, is just three back of the lead following a two-under 70. Several other notable names are tied at 70, including world No. 2 Jeeno Thitikul of Thailand and former Major winners Ayaka Furue of Japan, Minjee Lee of Australia and Koreans Amy Yang and A Lim Kim. Then there was Woad, whose even-par 72 featured four birdies and four bogeys. 'It was a bit mixed,' she said of her round. 'Had a good amount of birdies; just few poor bogeys on the front nine that could have definitely been avoided.' Max Verstappen quells speculation by committing to Red Bull for 2026
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Red Bull's Max Verstappen arriving at the Hungaroring circuit ahead of this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix. BUDAPEST - Max Verstappen ended weeks of speculation about his future on July 31 when the reigning Formula One world champion said he would be staying with Red Bull in 2026. Verstappen said it was time to 'stop all the rumours'. 'I've never really said anything about it because I was just focused on talking to the team about how we can improve our performance,' the Dutchman explained, at the Hungaroring circuit ahead of this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix. 'And that's why I had nothing really to add, but I think it's time to basically stop all the rumours. 'For me, it's always been quite clear that I was staying anyway.' Four-time world champion Verstappen's future became a subject of speculation after rival driver George Russell revealed his Mercedes team were talking to the Dutchman's management about his future plans. It emerged that there was a performance clause in Verstappen's contract that offered him a chance to leave Red Bull if he was not in the top three at the end of July. Top stories Swipe. Select. Verstappen is contracted to Red Bull until the end of 2028 and a similar scrutiny of his contract is expected in 2026 once it becomes clear which teams have adapted and progressed best under the new regulations. Verstappen has fallen 81 points behind series leader Oscar Piastri of McLaren into third place in the drivers' championship this year. Red Bull are in a state of flux, after sacking their team principal Christian Horner this month and replacing the Briton with Laurent Mekies, the boss of their 'B' team Racing Bulls. 'No one really knows' Horner's departure will have pleased Verstappen's father Jos, who turned against the man who had led Red Bull from their launch in 2024 following an accusation by a woman colleague of 'inappropriate behaviour'. The Englishman was twice cleared over the claims by the Formula One team's parent company, Red Bull GmbH. At the Belgian Grand Prix last weekend, Max Verstappen insisted Horner's shock departure had no impact on his future plans. He said the well-publicised discord between his father and Horner was never a problem. 'People can have a difference of opinion and I expect that to happen because if everyone agrees, there is a problem.' On July 31, when asked about his future after next year he replied: 'If you ask me that question next year, then yes, we'll have that speculation, but I never speak about it because I am more interested in working on performance - and that's why I never really talk about what is in my contract.' Despite McLaren and their two drivers Piastri and Lando Norris dominating this season, he said he still retained hopes of gaining some success before the end of the year. 'I know that the cars will be different next year, but there are still things that you can take out of this year on the engineering side of things and also implement for next year. 'So, you cannot just say 'Okay, we're not winning the championship this year, so we just write it off completely'. 'No-one really knows where they will be at next year.' AFP

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Soccer Football - Pre-Season Friendly - Yokohama F Marinos v Liverpool - Nissan Stadium, Yokohama, Japan - July 30, 2025 Liverpool's Wataru Endo is presented with an award after the match REUTERS/Issei Kato Wataru Endo said he could not join Yokohama F Marinos after a trial at the J-League club years ago, after the Japan midfielder returned to his hometown side on Wednesday as a Liverpool player. It was the first time Endo played in the Liverpool shirt in his own country as the Premier League champions beat Yokohama 3-1 in a pre-season friendly. "I supported this club actually and I went to (a) trial but I couldn't join this club. Now I came back here as a player of (Liverpool). It was a dream-come-true moment," the 32-year-old told Liverpool's official website. "It was an amazing moment for me because I came back to Japan as a Liverpool player. For me, it meant a lot." Endo made his senior debut at Shonan Bellmare, a club based in Hiratsuka, over 30 kilometres away from Yokohama. He played for Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart before joining Liverpool in 2023. Virgil van Dijk handed Endo the captain's armband as the latter replaced the Dutchman in the second half. "I think it was a great gesture. I think all Japanese people maybe wanted me to be captain," Endo added. Liverpool begin their Premier League title defence with a home game against Bournemouth on August 15. REUTERS
