Is Rajinikanth and Mani Ratnam reunion on cards? Here's what Thug Life director has to say
Rajinikanth and director Mani Ratnam had previously collaborated on the iconic film Thalapathi, which was released in 1991. Now, the filmmaker has spilled the tea on this and whether fans can expect a reunion from them.
In an interaction with News18, the director said, 'I think you should ask Rajini sir. You should see… we never know. After Thug Life, I plan to take a break. I have four scripts in mind, but none of them are fully fleshed out yet. If nothing comes out of them, then that's the end of it.'
For those unaware, the superstar and visionary director had previously worked together in Thalapathi. The film was based on the Hindu epic Mahabharata and the friendship shared between Karna and Duryodhana. It portrays Surya, an orphan who dwells in the slums and is known for his benevolent nature.
After he scuffles with a goon, he gets acknowledged by a mighty gangster called Deva, and later they become friends. As things start to come under the joint guidance of Surya and Deva, things take a turn when a righteous district collector comes into play who also happens to be a kin of Surya.
The rest of the film focuses on how Surya attempts to reconnect with his roots and how his friendship with Deva develops amid these events. Aside from the superstar, the movie also had actors Mammootty and Arvind Swamy as co-leads.
Coming to Mani Ratnam 's upcoming venture, the director is slated to hit the big screen with a film starring Kamal Haasan and Silambarasan TR, titled Thug Life. The gangster actioner tells the tale of Rangaraaya Sakthivel Naicker, an aging Yakuza-like gangster who has raised his foster son, Amaran, to take over his place in the mafia.
However, when Sakthivel is presumed dead, all suspicions lead to his adopted son. Now, with vengeance in mind, the former makes a return from his grave, eager to settle the scores for once and for all.
Apart from Haasan and STR, the film has Trisha Krishnan, Abhirami, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, and more in key roles.
On the other hand, Rajinikanth will be hitting the big screens on August 14, 2025, with the Lokesh Kanagaraj directorial Coolie.

Maa Box Office Collection Day 2: Kajol's Film Mints Rs 10 Crore, Sees Slight Growth
Last Updated: Kajol's mythological horror film Maa, directed by Vishal Furia, got mixed reviews. Despite a slow start, it crossed Rs 10 crore. Kajol's big-screen return after three years with Maa, a mythological horror film directed by Vishal Furia, has been met with a mixed response from both critics and audiences. Despite a lukewarm start on Friday with Rs 4.65 crore, the film showed a slight upward trend on its second day. As per early estimates, Maa has now crossed the Rs 10 crore mark at the box office. As per trade tracker Sacnilk, Maa earned Rs 4.65 crore on its opening day and followed it up with Rs 5.4 crore on Day 2. Despite receiving mixed reviews, the film held its ground, bringing its total domestic collection to Rs 10.05 crore. On its first Saturday, the film saw a Hindi occupancy rate of 22.36 per cent starting with 9.94 per cent in the morning, which picked up to 26.87 per cent in the afternoon and peaked at 30.26 per cent during evening shows. Maa was released alongside Vishnu Manchu's big-budget mythological drama Kannappa, which opened with a strong Rs 9.35 crore on Day 1. However, while Maa showed a slight rise in collections on its second day, Kannappa witnessed a dip. A part of the review of Maa by News18 read, 'The concept and story have substance, but the film lacked largely because of its style of storytelling. Besides, the film also has a lot of stereotypes that could have been done without. Besides the exaggeration that the palace had a almost 30-feet tall Kali maa's stone carved statue, the way people from Chandrapur talk in the film, everything seems to be a cliche that all the Bengalis would be running away from. It only gets disappointing to see Ronit Roy, who plays a vital part in the film, deliver all his Hindi dialogues with such a heavy Bengali accent. A lot would argue that it is not how people from Bengal speak when they talk in Hindi." In Maa, a mythological horror thriller, Kajol takes on the powerful role of Ambika, a fearless mother who will stop at nothing to protect her daughter from dark, supernatural forces. The film blends myth and mystery, marking Kajol's first foray into the horror genre. Alongside her, the cast includes Indraneil Sengupta, Jitin Gulati, and Kherin Sharma. Directed by Vishal Furia, Maa is backed by producers Ajay Devgn and Jyoti Subbarayan. First Published: June 29, 2025, 07:34 IST
