ICEA launches technology access platform for manufacturers, partners VC firm Caret Capital

NEW DELHI: The
India Cellular and Electronics Association
(
ICEA
) on Tuesday launched the '
Venture Access Labs
' in partnership with Venture Capital (VC) fund
Caret Capital
, to facilitate technology access between startups and India's electronics and manufacturing companies.
The association, in a joint statement, said that the platform would significantly provide the Indian manufacturing industry a competitive edge and connect manufacturers with startups innovating in the domains of advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), energy efficiency, materials science, and more.
It will also cover several functions, including procurement, planning, manufacturing, supply chain, finance, HR, legal and ESG (environmental, social, and governance).
'The research and development (R&D) spending of Indian companies has been really low, even lower than the average R&D spend of other countries. If Indian companies aspire to create world-leading products, they need to significantly invest. But the financial gap is too huge for them to cover on their own, and that is where we are trying to help with our latest initiative,' Salil Kapoor, co-founder and chief mentor of Venture Access Labs (VAL), told ETTelecom.
According to him, manufacturers in India can partner with domestic and international innovators to pool investment into technologies, which is expected to ease the financial strain on startups and MSMEs, and drive the overall R&D spending in the ecosystem.
ICEA will create an 'innovation directory' containing information about startups, technology innovators, disruptors, and incubators, along with their domain and use case expertise, and the real-life problems they are attempting to solve. The platform will enable one-to-one connection.
VAL expects to facilitate up to three cohorts of startups in various domains every year.
The collaboration with the VC fund, which supports early-stage startups, will ensure India's manufacturing industry has access to a vetted pipeline of global startups and emerging technologies that are strategically aligned with the specific business needs of industry, ICEA said.
'By opening the door to international technological advancements and building an innovation pipeline, we aim to accelerate India's
electronics manufacturing
capabilities and global competitiveness so as to capture a larger global market share,' said Pankaj Mohindroo, chairman, ICEA.
'The Venture Access Labs platform stands as a strategic catalyst in this transformation, empowering Indian industry to sharpen its global edge through innovation. VAL offers a unique platform for enterprises to discover, pilot, and scale breakthrough technologies that can redefine the future of manufacturing in India,' said Prajakt Raut, co-founder and managing partner at Caret Capital.

‘India set to become…': PM Modi after Trump's ‘dead economy' remark

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday indirectly responded to former US President Donald Trump's recent remarks labelling India's economy as 'dead,' asserting that India is poised to become the world's third-largest economy and must remain vigilant in protecting its interests amid global instability. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addresses a public meeting, in Varanasi.(PMO) Addressing a rally in Varanasi, PM Modi stressed the importance of economic self-reliance and reiterated his government's commitment to farmers, small industries, and youth employment. His remarks came just days after Trump announced a 25% tariff on Indian imports and warned of further economic penalties over India's continued trade with Russia. 'There is an atmosphere of global instability. All countries are focusing on their individual interests. India is set to become the third biggest economy in the world, and that is why India will have to stay alert as far as its economic interests are concerned,' the Prime Minister said. While Modi did not mention Trump by name, his comments were seen as a veiled retort to the US President's assertion that India's economy had "tanked" and that it relies heavily on American markets. Underscoring India's economic resilience, Modi called on citizens and the business community to support indigenous production through a renewed commitment to the 'vocal for local' movement. 'We will buy only those things that are made by Indians. We need to become vocal for local,' he urged the crowd, calling for a nationwide resolve to buy and promote 'swadeshi' products. 'Those who want the best for the country and want to see India as the third biggest economy in the world, be it any political party, should leave their differences aside and instil a resolution for 'swadeshi' products,' he added. The Prime Minister further said that the government's highest priority remains ensuring the welfare of farmers, small-scale industries, and employment generation. 'Our farmers, our small-scale industries, the employment for youth — their interest is our top priority. The government is doing everything it can in the best interest of the country. However, there are some responsibilities we have as citizens,' he said. PM Modi also made a direct appeal to India's business community, urging them to prioritize domestic products, especially in light of global disruptions. 'I also want to say to my brothers and sisters in the business community — the world is going through instability, and we should commit to selling only swadeshi goods,' he said. Earlier in the day, Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for infrastructure projects worth ₹2,200 crore in Varanasi. These included the widening and strengthening of key roads, construction of railway overbridges, and improvements to both rural and urban transportation corridors — part of ongoing efforts to modernize the constituency he has represented since 2014.

Currently not looking at getting benefits of EV promotion scheme: Volvo Car India MD

Swedish luxury carmaker Volvo is currently not looking at availing of benefits under India's scheme to promote passenger electric vehicles due to existing scale of the industry and will consider bringing plug-in hybrid vehicles in the country if the tax structure is conducive, a top official of its Indian arm said on Friday. Volvo Car India , which launched the refreshed version of its best selling model XC60 in India at an introductory price of ₹71.9 lakh, believes that the entry of new players like Tesla is good for popularising electric vehicles. "We believe right now, with the current scale of our industry, CKD (completely knocked down) offers the best solution. That is what we already have, and we'll continue to do that. As more benefits are seen and we anticipate bigger scale then we can evaluate others," Volvo Car India Managing Director Jyoti Malhotra told PTI. He was responding to a query on whether Volvo Car India is looking to avail of the benefits under the government's Scheme to Promote Manufacturing of Electric Passenger Cars in India. Under the scheme companies are allowed to import up to 8,000 electric four-wheeler units annually at a lower import duty of 15 per cent, against 70-100 per cent currently, provided they commit an investment of ₹4,150 crore for setting up local manufacturing facilities. Malhotra said there are various factors before taking "a call, and one of them is also the scale", adding "we have so many benefits available in India. There are different ways we can make cars in India or import cars in India." When asked about the increase in competition with the entry of the likes of Tesla in India, he said,"I would say we are not looking at anybody as a competitor. They are all different car makers, they are colleagues, they are all welcome to come. I think India needs more, the more the merrier." Asserting that Indian customers need choice, Malhotra said,"We are a huge country. One good thing I can say is that in the last 6-7 months we have seen a lot of interest in electric cars, we have seen a lot of interest in new generation cars and I think it is good... So the entry (of Tesla) is good for the customers." On Volvo Car India's sales growth of EVs, he said,"Within our own portfolio, almost one in four cars, roughly 25 per cent that we sell are electric cars, which is really very will be bringing another electric car, EX30 later this year." The company currently sells two EV models -- EC40 and EX40 -- in India. On the rare earth magnet shortage, Malhotra said,"We are doing assembly. We get our kits from other plants, so we are not directly impacted." On the refreshed XC60, he said it is being assembled at the company's Bengaluru facility along with other models that the company sells in India, he noted. When asked if the company would consider the plug-in hybrid version of the model, he told reporters, "We have a range of mild hybrids and plug-in hybrids... Those are the range that we have in this car (XC60) global portfolio has it but the Indian tax structure is not really conducive as of today." He further noted,"If things change, we can always bring it. So we are keeping a close watch." Under the current regulations hybrid passenger vehicles of length of up to 4 metre and up to 1200 cc petrol engine and up to 1500 cc diesel engine attract 28 per cent GST. On the other hand hybrid passenger vehicles of length above 4 metre or above 1200 cc petrol engine and above 1500 cc diesel engine are taxed at 28 GST with 15 per cent additional cess. "The mild hybrid that we have on offer today with the current (tax) structures that we have in India, I think this is best suited because we can offer the best value to our customers," Malhotra said, adding "but if things change, you can always bring it". On the company's sales growth prospects, he said Volvo Car India is looking at a flattish growth this year as it is in a transition from old platforms to newer ones.
