Ex-cooperative bank CEO Sujata Mahajan's arrest in fraud case illegal, court rules
Mahajan was taken into custody on September 30, 2024, in connection with a major financial fraud case. An audit revealed irregularities in loan disbursements, with loans worth Rs 1.88 crore allegedly obtained by Mahajan's husband and relatives without proper approval from the bank's Board of Directors. The total scam is reportedly valued at over Rs 242 crore. The court acknowledged that Mahajan's involvement in the financial offence was revealed during the investigation. However, it noted that her arrest took place after sunset and without informing her relatives, both of which are violations of legal procedure. As a result, the court deemed the arrest illegal.Appearing for Mahajan, Senior Counsel SV Manohar argued that the chargesheet lacked direct evidence of her involvement in the fraud. He also highlighted that the outstanding loans linked to her husband had already been repaid. Stressing on the procedural flaws, he said Mahajan's arrest after sunset and the failure to inform her relatives violated her fundamental rights.Opposing the bail, Public Prosecutor DV Chauhan contended that the investigation revealed Mahajan's role in sanctioning and disbursing loans without proper authorisation. He described the case as a serious economic offence, affecting nearly 37,000 depositors. The court pointed out discrepancies in the records related to Mahajan's arrest and the lack of communication with her family. It concluded that these procedural violations rendered the arrest unlawful.Granting bail, the High Court directed Mahajan to cooperate with the ongoing investigation, attend all court hearings, and surrender her passport.- Ends

Silver outshines gold, hits 1.12L/kg
Ahmedabad: Silver outpaced gold in returns this year, with prices in Ahmedabad climbing 30% since Jan 1 to touch a record Rs 1.125 lakh per kilogram on Monday. In comparison, gold gained 28% during the same period, rising from Rs 79,200 for 10g at the start of the year to reach the current Rs 1.015 lakh. The latest spike saw silver prices rise by Rs 2,500 in a single session to go up from Saturday's Rs 1.10 lakh. The white metal's stronger performance is backed by surging industrial demand and tight global supplies. "Silver's outperformance is largely due to increased consumption in sectors like solar energy and electronics. Last week, US President Donald Trump imposed a 50% tariff on copper imports, which will take effect on Aug 1. Since silver and copper are both widely used in industrial applications, especially in electronics and clean energy sectors, if copper becomes more expensive due to tariffs, manufacturers are likely to look for cheaper alternatives like silver," said Haresh Acharya, director of Indian Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA). Nearly 60% of silver's global demand now comes from industrial applications, particularly green technologies. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo "With India's bullish push for green energy through solarisation, silver consumption has sizeably increased in the country. With international prices hovering around $39 an ounce, silver is clearly emerging as a safe-haven investment and an essential input for industry," Acharya added. The increasing price of the yellow metal has impacted retail demand for gold. According to jewellers, both gold and silver are gradually getting out of reach of common customers. "A combination of industrial use and investment demand has fuelled the sharp rise, with silver ETFs attracting increasing investor interest as the metal gains attention for its growth potential. Gold and silver are clearly out of reach of customers. Exchange transactions have gone up substantially to 80% over the past six months, since when gold and silver prices increased. People come with old jewellery for repairing it or exchanging it for new. Jewellery trade is clearly muted," said Manoj Soni, member of the Jewellers' Association Ahmedabad (JAA).

Bank officer held for 27L fraud
Lucknow: The economic offences wing (EOW) of the UP Police on Monday arrested Chheda Lal Anuragi, former bank officer, accused of orchestrating Rs 27 lakh fraud by opening fake accounts in collusion with bank staff and others. He was arrested in Agra where he was posted as branch manager at Indian Bank, Holipura. EOW said that the case dates back to 2006, when Anuragi served as retail banking officer at the Allahabad Bank branch in Atarra, Banda. He along with other officials allegedly opened two fraudulent accounts using forged documents and IDs. Similar fake accounts were opened in Union Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Central Bank of India and Bank of Baroda. Using these fake accounts, chequebooks were issued and account payee cheques were deposited at Allahabad Bank's Atarra branch. Courier stafffalsely cleared these cheques, allowing payment of large sums. Investigations revealed that the original accounts held only nominal balances (as little as Rs 1,000–2,000), yet multiple high-value cheques were cleared. This coordinated fraud led to the illegal withdrawal of around Rs 27 lakh from Allahabad Bank's Atarra branch, causing significant financial loss. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? The five private accused have already been arrested. "Anuragi was apprehended on July 14, 2025, following a special arrest operation ordered by EOW director general Neera Rawat," said a senior EOW officer.
