Lionesses captain Leah Williamson believes her new-look side are ready to take on Europe as they look to retain the title they won in historic fashion at Wembley in 2022
Leah Williamson is ready to lead a 'new England' into a huge summer of sport. The Lionesses are preparing to defend their continental title but do so with a squad that looks markedly different from three years ago, with a new crop of fresh faces such as Aggie Beever-Jones and Michelle Agyemang having broken into the squad.
Captain Williamson will bring plenty of experience from previous major tournaments, as well as her own taste of continental success with club side Arsenal in May.
'I think it is exciting, we've said before we are a new England,' the 28-year-old said, as part of a new LG OLED TV collaboration ahead of this summer. 'We look different, women's football looks different, the task is different.
'It gets me smiling thinking about it because we have great memories and we want great memories again, and we are willing to work hard for them. It gives you a spike in your desire and all of those things to be better, and hopefully that means it is the start of a good summer.'
Williamson was embarking on her first major tournament as captain and her first competition as a starter for England in 2022. Since then, she has fought back from an ACL injury and has had to fight for her place back in the team.
All the while, Williamson has been a pivotal part of pushing women's sport to prominence in society, with women's football leading the way.

She added: 'Enjoy every single second and embrace every moment of it. If I could go back and do it all over again, I would. We were lucky we were educated on how big that was and how amazing of an opportunity that was.
'My advice is to just take it all in because it doesn't come around very often, and it is one of the greatest things to be able to do that on home soil, especially the level they are at and the hopes they have of success.'

Benjamin Sesko's asking price changes again to put Arsenal on red alert
Arsenal are interested in signing Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig this summer but have been biding their time, with Viktor Gyokeres another option being considered Arsenal have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Benjamin Sesko after RB Leipzig reportedly dropped their asking price. The Gunners are yet to sign a centre-forward in the summer transfer window but have made Sesko their top transfer target. Mikel Arteta knows they need a top-class striker to bolster their attack following a third straight second-placed finish in the Premier League. Sporting director Andrea Berta is the man tasked with signing one and has explored deals for Sesko and Sporting Lisbon goal machine Viktor Gyokeres. But things have gone quiet of late, much to the annoyance of some supporters, who are desperate for a striker to be signed. However, it now seems as though Arsenal 's patience could be rewarded, with Bild reporting that Leipzig are backing down from their previous stance. It was previously thought that the German side were demanding a fee of between €80million and €100m (£68m and £85m) for Sesko. That had put off the Premier League side, who reacted by exploring alternative options. But now it is being suggested that a fee of €70m (£59.7m) might be enough for the 22-year-old, who is under contract with Leipzig until June 2029 and scored 21 goals in 45 games across all competitions last season. Arsenal are long-term admirers of Sesko and believe he is a better bet than Gyokeres for a few reasons. The Slovenian international is five years younger than the 27-year-old former Coventry City striker and is playing in a more competitive division, with the Bundesliga rated higher than the Portuguese top flight. Sesko is open to moving to the Premier League this summer, but his agent is taking a different approach to Gyokeres, who has fallen out with Sporting's hierarchy. Asked about rumours that he had been lobbying Leipzig to lower their asking price, Elvis Basanovic said: 'This is far from truth. 'We respect RB Leipzig and I am 100 per cent convinced RB Leipzig will also respect our decision for the next step when we decide to do it. Even if there may be – or will be – a strong desire of the player to move to a certain club, we will never force or blackmail RB Leipzig. 'I believe this is not the right way, because the way you actually exit from the club shows your values. Values that you are bringing into a new club. I can understand in very big transfers, there are a lot of different interests but no matter what, I believe in football world should be more respect. 'So that's why we do things in the right way or we don't do them. It's very simple, even maybe in the media it looks very complicated.'

Olivier Giroud 'set to return to Europe at 38' - as LAFC confirm the former Chelsea and Arsenal striker's exit
Olivier Giroud has departed LAFC and reached an agreement to return to Europe, according to reports. The Frenchman has made 37 appearances and scored five goals for the MLS outfit since joining from AC Milan last summer. But after just over a year in Los Angeles, Giroud's final match with the club will be on Sunday, June 29, when the Black and Gold host Vancouver Whitecaps. At 38 years old, Giroud still seems keen to play at the highest level and has agreed a one-year contract proposal from Lille, as per Fabrizio Romano. It is understood that the former Arsenal and Chelsea striker has booked his medical with the Ligue 1 side, and will return to his home nation as the sun sets on his career. With LAFC, he added another piece of silverware to his cabinet, winning the U.S Open Cup in 2024. Giroud will return to France, where he began his career playing in Grenoble's youth academy before finally signing his first professional contract at the age of 21. He then endured a loan spell at Istres before permanently moving to Tours, where he enjoyed a standout stint. With 21 goals in the 2009–10 season, Giroud became Ligue 2 top scorer. His rise continued at Montpellier, helping the club win its first-ever Ligue 1 title in 2011–12 by scoring a league-best 21 goals. This earned him a move to Arsenal in 2012, where he scored 105 goals in 253 appearances, winning three FA Cups along the way. In January 2018, Giroud joined Chelsea, where he contributed 39 goals in 119 games, enjoying success in the FA Cup, Europa League, and, of course, the Champions League, which Chelsea won in 2021. Giroud then moved to AC Milan in 2021, helping them clinch their first Serie A title in 11 years by scoring 11 league goals in his debut season. Across three seasons in Italy, he netted 49 times in 132 matches.
