Double sex attacker's 'unduly lenient' ten-year jail sentence to be reviewed
Arshad Chaudrhy sexually assaulted one girl on multiple occasions in 2017 and, three years later, sexually assaulted another woman and attempted to rape her.
The 50-year-old was arrested after the two victims bravely came forward - and was then charged with seven sexual assaults, one attempted sexual assault and one attempted rape.
He denied all the offences at court but the jury saw through his lies. He was found guilty and sentenced to ten years in prison.
However, a spokesperson for the Attorney General's Office (AGO) has now confirmed that Chaudrhy's sentence had been referred under the Unduly Lenient Sentence Scheme.
They said: 'I can confirm that the Solicitor General has referred Arshad Chadurhy sentence to the Court of Appeal as they agree that it appears unduly lenient.
'It is now for the court to decide whether to increase the sentence.'
As previously reported, Chaudrhy was jailed on June 23 this year at Teesside Crown Court.
Following the sentencing, investigating officer Detective Constable Neil Chisholm from CET said: 'Chaudrhy targeted these two women in pursuit of his own sexual gratification.
'His crimes have had a lasting impact on his victims who were put through even more trauma when he tried to deny his crimes.
'Thankfully the jury saw through his lies and found him guilty. I'm pleased that justice has today been served and that he is now in prison where he can't hurt anyone else.
'Hopefully it has brought some closure to the victims.
'I'd like to thank the victims for their courage and strength throughout this whole process. I'd encourage anyone who has been sexually assaulted to come forward and report it.
'We will fully investigate it and support you throughout.'

‘Serious and systemic failures' at Oakhill youth jail prompt Government action
The Government has promised urgent reforms at Oakhill Secure Training Centre after inspectors uncovered 'serious and systemic failures' putting children at risk. Youth justice minister Sir Nic Dakin described the findings as 'truly shocking and unacceptable' following an inspection that led Ofsted, the CQC (Care Quality Commission) and HMI Prisons to issue an urgent notification to Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood. Inspectors found safeguarding systems in disarray, a fractured leadership team, and 30 staff suspended since November 2024 – 23 of them before mid-July this year, including 16 over allegations involving children. Sir Nic said: 'This is a truly shocking and unacceptable report. 'I have already visited Oakhill Secure Training Centre this week to ensure urgent action is being taken by G4S to prioritise the safety of the young people in their custody, and to further address the very serious concerns raised by Ofsted and the chief inspector. 'We will publish an action plan within the month to support them further in these efforts – and will not hesitate to take further action if needed.' Inspectors said Oakhill, in Milton Keynes, is no longer child-centred and found staff conduct to be of 'significant concern'. One deputy director has been dismissed, while the other and the centre's director are suspended. An interim director and new deputy have started work but have had 'limited opportunity' to make an impact. In response, G4S has appointed an interim director, and all staff implicated in allegations have been suspended. Concerns have been reported to local authorities, statutory bodies and the police where necessary. Each child's placement is now being reviewed, with the option to reduce the number of children at the centre if required. A governing governor has been also installed to provide additional oversight, alongside another appointed to lead on the urgent notification process. The Ministry of Justice said a full action plan would be published within 28 days. The inspection, carried out between July 21 and 25, follows years of concerns about the centre. Oakhill was rated inadequate at its last full inspection in October 2024 and has not received a rating higher than 'requires improvement' since 2017. The urgent notification process was introduced in 2017 to allow inspectors to trigger immediate action in cases of serious failure. It comes amid wider concerns about the youth custody estate, with MPs warning in a recent report that delays to secure schools and centre closures have left vulnerable children – particularly girls – in 'unsafe conditions'. The Public Accounts Committee said the system was 'totally unsuited' to meeting children's complex needs and warned that custody numbers are expected to more than double by 2024. Dame Meg Hillier, who chairs the committee, said the Government lacked a coherent strategy for youth custody and urged ministers to 'get a grip'.

"Following the report, officers were deployed along with the East Midlands Ambulance Service to safeguard those children concerned," police said, confirming that "all children present at the camp" had since been assessed. "Following an initial assessment, eight children were taken to hospital as a precaution and have all since been discharged," the release stated. Police confirmed officers had "contacted the parents or guardians of those children who were taken to hospital," adding that a suspect had been arrested on suspicion of poisoning. "A 76-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of administering poison/a noxious thing with intent to injure/aggrieve/annoy. He remains in custody at this time," the release — shared on Thursday, July 31 — stated. Local Detective Inspector Neil Holden, the senior investigating officer on the case, said: 'We understand the concern this incident will have caused to parents, guardians and the surrounding community," per the release. 'Please be reassured that we have several dedicated resources deployed and are working with partner agencies including children's services to ensure full safeguarding is provided to the children involved." Further inquiries are being carried out by authorities "to establish the circumstances of the incident as well as providing reassurance to families affected as well as the local community," the release noted. Conor McGregor loses appeal in civil sexual assault case
Conor McGregor has lost his appeal against the finding of a civil jury that he sexually assaulted a woman. Three judges in the Court of Appeal in Dublin rejected all grounds of McGregor's appeal. The MMA fighter was accused of raping Nikita Hand after a jury at Dublin's High Court found in November that McGregor assaulted her in a Dublin hotel in 2018. He was ordered to pay her nearly €250,000 (£215,000) in damages and around €1.3m (£1.1m) in legal costs following the trial. After the jury found him civilly liable, McGregor appealed on the basis of five grounds, one of which involved new evidence that was dramatically withdrawn at a hearing earlier this month. It was an affidavit from a former neighbour of Ms Hand, Samantha O'Reilly, who said she had witnessed a physical row between Ms Hand and her then-partner at about the same time of the incident at the Beacon hotel. His appeal went forward largely based on the circumstances under which his "no comment" answers to gardai (police) were allowed to enter the trial. Reading out the judgment on behalf of the three-judge panel, Mr Justice Brian O'Moore summarised the grounds for appeal before explaining why the Court of Appeal dismissed all five. "I therefore dismiss the appeal in its entirety," he said. Outside court, Ms Hand described the case as a "long and painful journey" and said the appeal has "re-traumatised me over and over again and being forced to relive it had a huge impact on me". Addressing "every survivor out there", she said "I know how hard it is, but, please, don't be silent. You deserve to be heard. You also deserve justice. Today I can finally move on and try to move on". Asked if she had any message for McGregor, she said "no". McGregor's co-defendant has also lost his appeal against the trial judge's decision not to award him his legal costs. During the same trial in November, the jury did not find James Lawrence had assaulted Ms Hand at the hotel. However, the trial judge decided that Ms Hand would not have to pay Mr Lawrence's costs. His legal team challenged whether that decision was correct and reasonable, arguing that Ms Hand should have to pay as the jury did not find he had assaulted her. Delivering their judgment on Thursday, the three judges of the court - Ms Justice Isobel Kennedy, Mr Justice Brian O'Moore and Mr Justice Patrick MacGrath - agreed to dismiss both appeals in their entirety. "I therefore dismiss the appeal in its entirety," he said. Ms Hand was embraced by her supporters in court after the judgment was delivered.
