Fans React to Lauryn Hill Performing in Nearly Empty Stadium
On Friday, July 4, Lauryn Hill took to the stage in Louisiana as part of a star-studded lineup at the 2025 Essence Festival of Culture. The roster also included the likes of GloRilla, the Isley Brothers, Babyface, and Maxwell, with Coco Jones coming in as an unannounced performer.
However, Hill sang in front of a nearly empty stadium after unprecedented delays occurred during the performances of those who preceded her. For instance, GloRilla ended her act at a time when the Isley Brothers had to finish their performance. Consequently, Maxwell took to the stage a few minutes before 1 a.m., further delaying Hill's arrival (via The Hollywood Reporter).
As such, Hill, who is infamous for being late on her shows, has many fans debating on the internet following her performance at the nearly empty stadium in New Orleans. Most of the reactions seem to take Hill's side, instead putting the blame on the organizers.
One X (formerly Twitter) user noted, 'The entire festival was pushed back. This was literally not her fault.' Another fan defended Hill, saying, 'I know we're used to Lauryn Hill not being on time, but the whole day ran late…This was on organizers and scheduling, not Ms. Lauryn Hill.' A third fan highlighted the delays in the concert before noting, 'If I'm Lauryn Hill, I'm probably cussing out Essence cause this is just unacceptable.'
Essence Festival has addressed concerns regarding Hill's show in an Instagram post, stating that the Ex-Factor singer performing in front of a nearly empty crowd wasn't her fault, as 'she arrived on schedule.'

Former Olympic wrestler and MMA star Ben Askren recovering after double lung transplant
Associated Press MILWAUKEE (AP) — Former Olympic wrestler and MMA star Ben Askren, who has been hospitalized in Wisconsin after a severe case of pneumonia, said in a post on social media Wednesday that he had undergone a double lung transplant and is in recovery. Askren said during the Instagram video that he recalls very little of what happened over a monthlong stretch from late May through the first two days of July. His wife, Amy, had said in a series of social media posts that Askren was put on a ventilator in June and placed on the donor list for a lung transplant on June 24. 'No recollection, zero idea, no idea what happened,' Askren said of most of the past six weeks. "I just read through my wife's journal. It's like a movie. It's ridiculous. I only died four times, where the ticker stopped for about 20 seconds.' Askren said he lost about 50 pounds during the 45-day stretch. 'The thing that was most impeccable to me was all the love I felt,' Askren said. 'It was almost like I got to have my own funeral.' The 40-year-old Askren was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, but has lived primarily in Wisconsin, where he runs a youth wrestling academy. He won back-to-back NCAA titles at Missouri and competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics for the U.S. before moving into MMA, where he fought for Bellator and ONE Championship before moving into the UFC. Askren retired from MMA after a loss to Demian Maia in October 2019. He had a record of 19-2 with one no contest. Askren made a brief return to combat sports in April 2021, when he fought social media star Jake Paul in a boxing match. Paul won by technical knockout in the first round of a fight that sold about 500,000 on pay-per-view. ___ AP sports: in this topic

Cierra breaks silence on 'Love Island USA' exit, apologizes for 'incredibly offensive' slur
Days after her abrupt exit from the "Love Island USA" villa, Cierra Ortega is addressing the reason she was removed from the show. In the week leading up to her departure, some social media users expressed outrage over screenshots of a few alleged Instagram posts and messages in recent years that showed Ortega using a racist slur against people of Asian descent to negatively refer to her eyes. The 25-year-old, wearing a sweater with "empathy" emblazoned across the front, opened a nearly five-minute video on Instagram on July 9 by issuing an apology to "not just anyone that I have hurt or deeply offended, but most importantly, the entire Asian community. I am deeply, truly, honestly, so sorry." "While I was in the villa, there were some posts that resurfaced from my past where I was very naively using an incredibly offensive and derogatory term," she said. "I had no idea that the word held as much pain, as much harm, and came with the history that it did, or I never would have used it. I had no ill intention when I was using it, but that's absolutely no excuse because intent doesn't excuse ignorance." She went on to call the post "not an apology video," but rather "an accountability video." On July 6, she was phased out of the Peacock romance-competition show – in which she first appeared at the end of the June 3 premiere episode – around 15 minutes in as narrator Iain Stirling announced she "has left the villa due to a personal situation." She and her partner, Nic Vansteenberghe, were the only couple to label themselves as exclusive; their fellow islanders appeared to consider them frontrunners to win the cash prize as the season concludes Sunday, July 13. What happened? What we know about Cierra Ortega's 'Love Island USA' exit Cierra 'had no idea' slur she used was racist Ortega said she did not know the racist origins of the word she used in multiple social media posts, explaining, "I do want it to be known that I genuinely had no idea that it was a slur. I had no of its meaning." The slur was "immediately removed from my vocabulary" in 2024, when she posted an Instagram story and "a follower of mine reached out to correct me and let me know that what I was saying was incredibly hurtful." She shared a screenshot of a direct message exchange and denied any "narrative" that she had doubled down on using the word, as alleged in a screen grab of an exchange that is circulating on social media. Cierra: 'I completely agree' with 'decision to remove me from the villa' Ortega did not push back against the "Love Island USA" producers' choice to have her leave the reality TV show. "I completely agree with the network's decision to remove me from the villa. I think that this is something that deserved punishment, and the punishment has absolutely been received for sure," she said. Ortega, an Arizonan whose family is Mexican and Puerto Rican, went on to denounce the backlash from viewers, some of whom have allegedly called U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on her family. "My family doesn't feel safe in their own home. I'm receiving death threats," she said. "There's no need to fight hate with hate. I don't think that that's justice." Prior to Ortega's video, a message attributed to her family was posted on her Instagram story on the evening of July 6. Cast members do not regain access to their phones for a certain amount of time. "We're not here to justify or ignore what's surfaced. We understand why people are upset, and we know accountability matters. But what's happening online right now has gone far beyond that," the lengthy statement said, in part. "The attacks on her family, her friends, even her supporters, it's heartbreaking. It's uncalled for. And no one deserves that kind of hate, no matter what mistake they've made."

Drake Kicks Off The Road To ‘ICEMAN' With Livestream, New Music Video For 'What Did I Miss?'
For the second year in a row, the 4th of July played host to a momentous musical release; coincidentally, the consecutive drops have come from the two guys who had the biggest rap beef of all time last year, Drake and Kendrick Lamar. The 6 God hosted a live stream where he debuted a new single accompanied by a music video, teased additional new music, and took a victory lap throughout his hometown, Toronto. On Friday afternoon (July 4), the 38-year-old rapper posted a simple graphic on Instagram that read '9 PM.' Soon, music pages began to circulate that he had a new single coming out titled 'What Did I Miss?' A few minutes before it was time to hear the rumored track, a live link appeared on the five-time Grammy winner's YouTube page titled 'ICEMAN EPISODE 1.' The live stream started late, but when it began, fans looked into an ice warehouse for about 20 minutes. For months, Drizzy had been posting images suggesting his next album would be titled ICEMAN, and this company happened to have that same name, so this stream felt like a confirmation. Eventually, the camera angles in the warehouse started changing and showed him walking through the warehouse into a break room. There, he watched old footage of himself performing on a television before the screen transitioned to him standing in his backyard with several guns pointed at him. The beat dropped, and per the chorus, it was clear that this was the worldwide debut of his new single 'What Did I Miss?' and its music video. He rapped and danced along to the song while walking throughout the warehouse before jumping into one of the ICEMAN trucks. The cameras followed him as he drove throughout Toronto, playing a new song rumored to be titled 'Supermax,' plus a repeat of 'What Did I Miss?' and his guest appearance on Smiley's latest single '2 Mazza.' While driving through his city, he greeted and exchanged handshakes with fans. After the live stream ended, Drake announced that 'What Did I Miss?' would be available on all streaming platforms at midnight, and, sure enough, it was. The record reflects on this past year of his career and the betrayals he's been on the wrong side of amid his beef with K. Dot. 'I don't give a f**k if you love me, I don't give a f**k if you like me/ Askin' me, 'How did it feel?' Can't say it didn't surprise me/ Last time I looked to my right, you ni**as was standing beside me/ How can some people I love hang around pu**ies who try me?' he sings in the chorus. Also, notably at the end of the live stream, he announced, 'ICEMAN Coming Soon.' There is currently no date set for the album, but given the father of one's affinity for releasing new albums in the fall, it is safe to predict that he may follow suit here. If so, that would be another year of his career where he releases multiple albums, with the PARTYNEXTDOOR-assisted collaborative album $ome $exy $ongs 4 U coming out this past February.
