Former All-Star center Dwight Howard had devastating news to share with the basketball world on Wednesday night.
Howard, a three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year, revealed that his dog was killed in an alleged hit-and-run. He shared photos of his dog Sunday on Instagram along with some touching words about her.
"From the moment I got you, Sunday, you were more than just my dog…You were my peace. My protector.A reminder of everything beautiful and calm just like those early Sunday mornings," Howard said. "You hugged like no other.Barked at nothing like it meant everything. And every time I called your name, you came running full speed like your only mission was to love me.You waited at the door for me every single day, just to wrap your paws around me. And I'm gonna miss those hugs more than I can put into words."
Howard then called out the driver responsible for Sunday's tragic death.
"I was having a great time in New York this past week until I got the news that my Sunday got loose and was hit by a car that kept going," Howard wrote on Instagram. "I'm devastated because you were the dog that never left my side, the dog that stuck to my hip at all times, and the one time you wander off without me being there someone takes you away from me.
"Who could be so heartless to do this to such an innocent girl with no remorse. I've been trying to hold this in… I really have but it's killing me inside to get answers! I need answers and I won't stop searching until I find out what happen to my beautiful Sunday."
Immediately after Howard shared this devastating news on social media, basketball fans extended their thoughts and prayers.
"My condolences brother Sunday was a beautiful dog. May you find the answers and have peace," one person told Howard.
"So sorry to hear about Sunday brother - hopes and prayers for her beautiful soul," a second person said.
"Praying for healing for you. They are our family," another person wrote.
"I'm so sorry. What a heartless action to hit a poor dog and not immediately get it to an emergency vet," an Instagram user commented.
Howard has asked people with any information regarding his Belgian Malinois to reach out to him.
It's unclear if the police are investigating this alleged hit-and-run.
All we know for now is that Howard's dog was reportedly struck by a car in Suwanee, Georgia.Prayers Pouring In For NBA Legend Dwight Howard Thursday first appeared on The Spun on Jun 26, 2025

Yankees' Clarke Schmidt makes franchise history with scoreless innings streak

NEW YORK — After dominating the Baltimore Orioles with seven no-hit innings in his last outing, New York Yankees manager hailed Clarke Schmidt as 'one of the most underrated starting pitchers in the game.' Soon — if he's not already there — he'll be properly rated as one of the best starters in Major League Baseball. Advertisement Schmidt set the Yankees' single-season franchise record with 28 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings in the Expansion Era (1961), passing Catfish Hunter's 26-inning streak in 1975. Athletics designated hitter Brent Rooker snapped Schmidt's streak in the fourth inning with a solo home run over the left-field wall. Schmidt's streak is the longest scoreless streak by a Yankees starter since Don Larsen's 29 innings across the 1957 and 1958 seasons. Clarke Schmidt's 2Ks in the 2nd…and Sword. ⚔️ — Rob Friedman (@PitchingNinja) June 28, 2025 Schmidt's streak began after a humiliating first inning against the Cleveland Guardians on June 4. Schmidt allowed three runs on three hits against a Guardians lineup that featured eight left-handed hitters that day. Since the second inning against the Guardians, Schmidt has been dominant. 'I just feel like he has a real good handle on his arsenal,' Boone said before Saturday's game against the Athletics. 'I feel like his pitch usage right now, especially the last few, has been excellent.' The scoreless streak coincided with Schmidt incorporating a four-seam fastball to his arsenal. It's a pitch he hasn't thrown since the early years of his MLB career, as he scrapped it for a cutter and sinker. But entering Saturday's game, Schmidt's fastball has been elite, holding opposing hitters to a .125 batting average and .188 slugging percentage. 'This has been a pitch that we've been working on and fiddling with over the course of this year,' Schmidt said earlier this month. 'I'm really happy with where it's been. It doesn't always get registered as a four-seamer, so the usage is messed up a little bit. For me, it just gets guys off the cutter, especially lefties. It can be effective versus righties as well for some swing-and-miss at the top of the zone, especially when guys are hunting my breaking ball package. When you can mix up usages and get guys off certain pitches that they're obviously sitting on, that's when you find success.' Advertisement Schmidt hasn't just been helping the big-league club find success when he's on the mound, either. The righty took The Athletic through his day-to-day routine with how he gets prepared for his start day. That story has since been shared with Yankees minor leaguers and coaches for them to get a sense of what it takes to be a major-league starter. This story will be updated.

Kansas deputy, suspect killed in exchange of gunfire after a call about fireworks, authorities say

PHILLIPSBURG, Kansas (AP) — A sheriff's deputy in Kansas responding to a call about fireworks died after being shot by a man who was then killed by the fatally wounded deputy, authorities said. Phillips County Sheriff's Office Deputy Brandon Gaede, 30, was pronounced dead at a hospital about an hour after the shooting Friday evening in Phillipsburg, the sheriff's office said. The city of about 2,000 people is near the state's border with Nebraska. The sheriff's office said Gaede was responding to a call about illegal, non-consumer-grade fireworks being detonated at a home in the city when he made contact with Kolton Griffith, a resident at the home believed to be responsible for the fireworks. When Gaede tried to place Griffith in handcuffs after developing probable cause to arrest him, a struggle broke out and Griffith pulled out a handgun that had been concealed and shot Gaede, the sheriff's office said. Despite being struck by gunfire, Gaede returned fire, hitting Griffith multiple times, the sheriff's office said. Griffith died at the scene. The shooting will be investigated by the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office.

Hurricanes Select NCAA Center Charlie Cerrato 49th Overall

The Carolina Hurricanes have selected Penn State center Charlie Cerrato with the 49th overall pick of the 2025 NHL Draft. Cerrato, 20, is a double overager, having gone through multiple drafts, but he put the time in in the NCAA to round out his game and get on scout's radar. Advertisement The 6-foot center had 42 points in 38 games last season with Penn State and was a finalist for the Big Ten Freshman of the Year. Center was a big need for the Canes, so the addition of Cerrato, an older prospect, could certainly help out the pipeline.
