Hot In The City: Why The Wrong Trees In The Wrong Places Matters

In the last days of last month, the death toll tripled in several major European cities in the face of sweltering heat. Milan, Paris, Barcelona and London were the worst hit. With more than two thirds of the world's population expected to live in cities by 2050, the race to cool them down is on. Tree planting has become an important part of urban heat mitigation efforts.
But a Cambridge University-led study shows that planting the wrong species or combinations of trees may not just reduce the benefits, but actually make things worse, elevating night time temperature.
The scientists found that planting trees in urban areas can lower pedestrian-height air temperature by up to 12 degrees centigrade (53.5 F). Introducing trees reduced the highest temperature in 83% of the cities studied. However, the extent will vary, depending on urban layout and species' traits.
'Our study challenges the common perception that trees are the ultimate panacea for overheating cities worldwide,' says Professor Ronita Bardhan from the University of Cambridge. 'Trees have a crucial role to play in cooling cities down, but we need to plant them much more strategically to get the best results.'
For instance, adds Bardhan, 'The cooling behaviour of a species in a rural environment may be very different in an urban setting. It also matters where these trees are placed. In more sparsely populated areas they will do well, but in heavily built-up areas, they won't.'
Until now, we've known relatively little about unique tree cooling mechanisms and how these interact with different urban features. Previous research has tended to focus on specific climates or regions, relying on fragmented case studies.
The first comprehensive global assessment of urban tree cooling has changed all that. The authors looked at a wide range of studies over 17 climates in 100 cities and regions for the period 2010 – 2023. Understanding why planting matters is the first step in getting green right.
How Trees Cool Cities
In daytime, trees help reduce temperature by blocking solar radiation while water evaporation and foliage alters the airflow. In some circumstances, however, the 'wrong' trees can also increase air temperature at night.
'When the aerodynamic resistance is high and the leaf stomata close, heat dissipation through transpiration is reduced, limiting the escape of heat energy,' Bardhan says. 'This typically happens at night. If there is a high humidity load, this humid-warm air can be trapped and re-circulate beneath the tree canopy.'
The scientists found that urban trees in compact settings are most effective in cooling cities in hot and dry climates but are less effective in hot, humid ones.
In tropical wet and dry climates with distinct wet and dry seasons, such as central Africa, parts of South America and northern Australia, trees can be very effective in cooling cities by day. In Nigeria, trees can cool temperatures by as much as 12 degrees centigrade. But at night, trees warmed cities the most, by up to 0.8 degrees.

A lush green canopy hangs over parts of Dubai City. Among the acacias, neem, olive, palm and other desert trees the evening air carries the scent of Indian jasmine. Last year the municipality planted 216,500 new trees as part of its ambitious 2023 Quality of Life Strategy.
Bardhan and colleagues found that trees performed well in arid climates such as Dubai's, cooling cities by just over 9 degrees and warming them at night by 0.4 degrees.
Elsewhere, however, in a tropical rain forest climate with higher humidity, daytime cooling was only 2 degrees. Closer to home, trees in more temperate climates, such as London, can cool cities by 6 degrees but warm them up by 1.5 degrees.
In many hot countries, trees tend to be evergreen. By including deciduous trees in the mix, the cooling effect can often be greater. Recent planting schemes in Saudi Arabia have incorporated deciduous as well as evergreens.
The nature of the local urban environment will have an impact on the potential cooling while the idea balance of temperate and deciduous trees will vary. Urban layouts such as London's are more likely to benefit from the inclusion of deciduous trees alongside evergreens, but to a lesser extent than in Saudi Arabia.
'If you plant deciduous trees in a densely populated part of London, they won't perform in the same way as in the wild,' Bardhan observes. 'It's also important where these trees are placed. Trees may perform well in sparsely populated areas, but in dense urban settings the limited cooling impact reflects failed design.
"To be effective for the climate, cities need to treat nature as a fundamental design variable, rather than an afterthought.'
Selecting the optimum type and location for trees in an urban setting is critical.
Few cities can afford projects on the scale of Dubai's and those who may need the right trees most because of global warming – are often the poorest.
Bardhan and her colleagues at Cambridge have come up with a solution. They are developing a prototype shading device, inspired by nature's way of cooling. It's already been tested out successfully in dense urban areas.
'It mimics everything that natural trees do,' explains Bardhan 'We can control humidity along with temperature unlike standard shading devices that only regulate temperature. The design also allows the release of trapped radiation at night, unlike a tree.'
The shading device can resemble a tree or take other forms, such as a vending cart. Rather than just being a luxury in affluent neighbourhoods, shade and cooling can come to schoolchildren and the most vulnerable communities at relatively low cost. As Bardhan says, it's climate action put into reality.
With the data provided by the Cambridge study, urban planners have an invaluable tool that could transform efforts to reduce heat.

The category loosely refers to less developed economies, especially countries outside the U.S. and European orbits. Since 2022, the U.S. has sought to restrict China's access to advanced semiconductors for training AI models. Earlier this month, U.S. chipmaker Nvidia said the U.S. was allowing it to resume shipments of a less advanced H20 chip to China after a roughly three-month pause. However, China has been developing homegrown alternatives, which Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang both praised and described as "formidable" during his third trip to China this month. Stunning Grand Canyon Fossils Reveal Evolution's Weird Experiments

A stunning new fossil find from the Grand Canyon fills in some blanks from a time when evolution began experimenting with weird new forms. About half a billion years ago, life on Earth really started cooking in an event we now call the Cambrian explosion. The fossil record from that time reveals a spike in bizarre, complex creatures appearing within a relatively short amount of time, laying the roots for most of the major animal groups that exist today. Frustratingly, fossils from later in the Cambrian period are rarer, so we don't have a clear picture of evolution's experimental second album. But a newly discovered batch of extremely well-preserved fossils could patch up that gap. These are about 505 million years old – 3 million years younger than the Burgess Shale, the layer in which fossils from the Cambrian explosion appear. Related: A team led by researchers at the University of Cambridge found more than 1,500 small, carbonaceous fossils in samples from the Bright Angel Formation (BAF) of the Grand Canyon, which was once a shallow marine environment. The vast majority of the fossils are priapulid worms, along with a couple hundred crustaceans and a few mollusks. Although ecological resources were plentiful at the time, competition was also on the rise, rewarding species that exploited new niches. Analysis of these fossils revealed a variety of adaptations to do just that. A worm species called Kraytdraco spectatus, for example, was found to be covered in teeth sporting elaborate filaments, which varied in shape and length based on where they were on the body. The researchers suggest that they used their tougher teeth to scrape and rake surfaces, kicking up food particles that they could then filter out of the water using the longer filaments. Crustacean fossils featured signs of suspension feeding by way of tiny hairs that pushed food particles towards the mouth to be ground up by molar-like structures. The mollusks, meanwhile, sported rows of shovel-shaped teeth that could have been dragged front-to-back to scrape algae or microbes from surfaces. The Cambrian explosion gets plenty of attention because it's so well-represented in the fossil record, but that was just the beginning. The newly described fossils, with their exceptional level of preserved detail, provide a fascinating glimpse into the time soon after that, when complex life was established and comfortable, and had the stability to start innovating with new forms. And we should be glad it did: most of the major groups (or phyla) of animals got their start during the Cambrian. That includes arthropoda, encompassing all insects, arachnids, and crustaceans. And there's chordata, which includes us and the rest of our backbone-bearing brethren. The competitive period of the late Cambrian could have cemented the strategies that helped animals stay successful half a billion years later. "If the Cambrian Explosion laid the foundations of modern metazoan adaptive solutions, it is the scaling up of their competitive interactions that may have enforced directional, long-term trends of functional innovation in the Phanerozoic biosphere," the researchers write. Opinion: Looking into a lead-filled society

Although the majority of Orange County is filled with clean suburbs where good health and environment is expected, in the city of Santa Ana, there are many industrial regions where the air, water, and soil are polluted. These contaminants create an ugly landscape. More importantly, they pose substantial dangers to residents, who are a historically disproportionately marginalized community. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), if the amount of lead in the soil exceeds 400 parts per million (ppm) , it is deemed hazardous to health. The California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment lowered the soil lead risk standard to just 80 ppm . However, in Santa Ana, out of the 1,500 soil samples collected, half of them were found to have exceeded the standard of 80 ppm. Furthermore, some samples were found to have reached an astounding 2,600 ppm, highlighting the severity of the issue. Interestingly, UCI-led research found that in the soil where the median household income was below $50,000, there was a 440% higher amount of lead than in places with a median household income of $100,000. Furthermore, over 50% of unsafe lead found in samples were primarily in places with more minority residents who cannot afford benefits such as health insurance. According to the samples collected, two main causes of the lead contamination issue in Santa Ana were found. The first was the excessive use of lead paint up to the year 1978. Buildings were primarily painted using lead paint, and their paint chips and dust continue to be a risk for lead poisoning. However, the main cause of the lead contamination was found to be from historical gasoline emissions. Santa Ana's many old highways and streets cause higher lead concentrations, especially due to its close proximity to neighborhoods. In fact, high levels of lead in children can cause many neurological issues such as developmental delay, learning difficulties, loss of appetite/weight loss, hearing loss, seizures, and more. Adults can also suffer from high blood pressure, joint/muscle pain, loss of memory and concentration, mood disorders, miscarriage, and other symptoms. Although there are still many challenges that the city of Santa Ana faces in regard to its lead contamination, there are many organizations working to make the city a safer place to live. Recently, an initiative headed by Jovenes Cultivando Cambios, called 'PloNo Santa Ana!' partnered with the Orange County Environmental Justice (OCEJ) organization to launch a General Plan (GP) to test lead, repair the soil, and to provide health care to residents who are impacted by the lead contamination. Furthermore, professors from UCI and community members of the Inequities in Childhood Life-Course Lead Exposure and Academic Neurobehavioral Outcomes (I-CLEAN) work to further study the impact that lead has on children. There are several things that all of us can do to alleviate this problem. For example, you can plant vegetation such as sunflowers, spinach, or corn, which have the ability to remove lead from the soil . Furthermore, such plants add much-needed greenspace to cities like Santa Ana. If you want to help advocate for larger changes, then you can join organizations such as the OCEJ PloNo! movement and help change environmental policies on both local and national levels. All of us can agree that everyone, especially children, deserve to live in clean environments.
