While the Calgary Flames have gobs of salary-cap space, we don't expect them to be especially busy on Canada Day. They still have some more retooling to do before Craig Conroy is likely to be reeling in any big fish.

Giroux staying with Senators, source says as Blue Jackets re-sign Fabbro
Veteran forward Claude Giroux is staying in Ottawa after agreeing to a one-year contract with the Senators, a person familiar with the discussions confirmed to The Associated Press on Sunday. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the agreement is not finalized and was reached two days before the player was scheduled to become a free agent. Sportsnet first reported the deal. In the meantime, the Columbus Blue Jackets locked up defenseman Dante Fabbro to a four-year, $16.5 million contract, while the Tampa Bay Lightning placed forward Conor Sheary on unconditional waivers for the purposes to terminate his contract. The 37-year-old Giroux is set to return for a fourth season in Ottawa, after helping the Senators reach the playoffs for the first time in eight years. The former Flyers captain had 15 goals and 35 assists in 81 games to reach 50 points for a 13th career season last year. Columbus acquired the 27-year-old by claiming him in November after Nashville placed Fabbro on waivers. 'Dante was a great addition to our team last season and keeping him in Columbus was a priority,' general manager Don Waddell said. The Lighting are parting ways with Sheary. The 10th-year player was limited to playing just five games with the Lightning last season, while spending a majority of last season in the minors because of the team's salary cap constraints. The 33-year-old Sheary had one more year left on his three-year contract, and was due to make $2 million next season. Sheary won Stanley Cups during each of his first two NHL seasons with Pittsburgh in 2016 and '17. He signed with Tampa Bay as a free agent two years ago, and finished with four goals and 15 points in 62 games with the Lightning. He also played for Buffalo and Washington, and has 124 goals and 267 points in 593 games. If unclaimed, Sheary will become an unrestricted free agent. The Seattle Kraken placed forward Joe Veleno on unconditional waivers for the purpose to buy out the final year of his contract, in which he was due to make $2.275 million. Story continues below advertisement Veleno has five seasons of NHL experience and was acquired by Seattle last week in a trade that sent forward Andre Burakovsky to Chicago. The 25-year-old Veleno spent his first four-plus NHL seasons in Detroit, and has 38 goals and 81 points in 306 games. The Anaheim Ducks maintained their depth at goalie by signing Ville Husso to a two-year contract extension. The 30-year-old provides the Ducks insurance behind projected starter Lukas Dostal and Petr Mrazek, who was acquired in a trade that sent John Gibson to Detroit on Saturday. Husso has a NHL record of 71-46-19 and went 1-1-1 in four appearances with Anaheim last season after being acquired in a trade with Detroit in February. Husso spent the rest of his time with Anaheim in the minors.

Senators sign forward Claude Giroux to 1-year contract extension for 2025-26 season
Ottawa Senators announced Sunday that the team has signed forward Claude Giroux to a one-year contract extension for the 2025-26 NHL season. Steve Staios, general manager and president of hockey operations, announced that Giroux's new contract includes a base salary of $2 million for the next season, in addition to bonuses that could reach $4.75 million. 'Claude brings veteran leadership and a competitive edge to our group and has been a consistent presence on and off the ice,' said Staios. 'We are excited to bring him back next season.' The 37-year-old appeared in 81 regular season games in 2024-25 with the senators, scoring 15 goals and 50 points. He's only missed one regular season game in three seasons with the capital's team. Giroux has also collected 193 points in 245 games for the nation's capital. Giroux has compiled 1,116 points over the course of 18 NHL seasons, ranking 66th all-time amongst skaters.

The following day, when the Flames welcomed Mace'o Phillips to the fold, the heavy-hitting blue-liner wanted to brag a bit about his own mother, Amy. 'She's kind of the reason I am who I am today,' Phillips said. 'She is the first person I hugged when I got picked. I can't thank her enough for all she's done for me.' Amy has been a pillar of strength for this defence prospect from Wayzata, Minn., raising Mace'o and his sister as a single parent. She was also a heck of an athlete in her own right. During the draft broadcast, they mentioned that Amy competed in gymnastics and soccer. According to her son, who has spent the past two seasons with USA Hockey's National Team Development Program (USNTDP), there was another sport that they forgot to mention. 'Her eighth-grade year, she was out in the field at Apple Valley High School here in Minnesota and she was just kicking some field goals with her friends,' Phillips said. 'And the boys' football coach saw her kicking field goals and they asked her to be the kicker for the boys' football team in high school. 'So I definitely get some of that athleticism from her.' Potter and Phillips, two of the eight prospects selected by the Flames in the 2025 NHL Draft, are actually close friends. They both hail from Minnesota and were teammates with the USNTDP in 2023-24. Everything College Hockey recently filmed a day-in-the-life feature on Potter, who has already played his freshman season with the Arizona State Sun Devils, and Phillips makes a cameo as his pickleball partner. You can bet these buddies have been volleying back and forth about eventually becoming fan faves in Calgary. Just like Jenny was a speedster on skates, Cullen can absolutely fly. This potential pivot is now the fastest player in the Flames' pipeline and has the soft hands required to make offensive plays at high pace. While Mace'o moves well for his size, he is less dash and more smash. At 6-foot-6 and 233 pounds, he would also be an appealing football recruit. He plays an aggressive, imposing brand and led the USNTDP in penalty minutes this winter, with 103. There is a former NHL tough guy on the Flames' amateur scouting staff, and he can vouch for Phillips' grip strength.
