A bizarre incident during a virtual hearing in the Gujarat High Court has sparked widespread attention after a litigant was seen attending proceedings from his toilet. The episode took place on June 20 before the bench of Justice Nirjar S. Desai and was caught on video, which has since gone viral on social media.
The video begins with a close-up of a man identified as 'Samad Battery', wearing earphones around his neck. As he adjusts his phone, it becomes apparent that he is seated in a toilet. The footage then shows him cleaning himself before exiting the washroom. He briefly goes off-screen and later reappears in a different room.

According to High Court records, the defendant was involved in a criminal case and was seeking the quashing of an FIR. After hearing arguments from both sides, the High Court decided to quash the FIR.
The incident has sparked discussions about appropriate behaviour during virtual court proceedings. This is not the first instance of such misconduct.
In April, the Gujarat High Court fined a litigant Rs 50,000 for inappropriate behaviour during a video conference. Similarly, in March, a Delhi court summoned a litigant who was seen smoking while pleading his case via video link.

One such victim approached the Punjab and Haryana high court, which subsequently ordered the registration of an FIR against him. The case includes charges under Sections 419, 465, 467, 468, and 471 of the IPC, along with provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Gursher is alleged to have played a key role in facilitating televised interview of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi at the CIA staff office in Kharar. At the time, Gursher was serving as DSP (investigation), Mohali, and was frequently stationed at CIA office in Kharar. The interview caused a political and public uproar, prompting intervention from the high court, which led to his dismissal from service and suspension of seven other police officials. The vigilance bureau has intensified its manhunt for Gursher and is expected to widen its probe into his financial transactions, real estate dealings, and possible overseas links.

Goa Police books actors Puja Banerjee, Kunal Verma for extortion, abduction
Goa Police have registered an FIR against TV actor couple Puja Banerjee and Kunal Verma for allegedly abducting and extorting money from Bengali filmmaker Shyam Sunder Dey, officials said on Saturday. An FIR was initially registered at Panache police station in Kolkata on June 12 against the actor couple on the complaint of Dey's wife Malabika. The case was transferred to Calangute Police in North Goa as the purported incident had occurred in their jurisdiction, an official said. Goa Police booked the actor couple, Piyush Kothari, and others on the charges of kidnapping, assault, and extortion. The official said Dey had been asked to appear before Goa Police for recording his statement. "We have asked him to appear before the investigating officer as soon as possible," the official said. Dey's wife stated in the FIR that her husband shared a familial relationship with Banerjee and Verma, who offered to fund his business project. Dey has 50 films to his credit. "He is frequently approached by investors and lenders for his film projects, and in that capacity developed a close, almost a family relationship with Kunal and Puja, who had offered him to fund for his business project," the complaint reads. She claimed that her husband was working on a script writing assignment and driving a rented car with his assistant in Goa on May 31 when he was abducted. "On May 31, a black-coloured vehicle intercepted Shyam Sunder's car and he was abducted by goons, Puja Banerjee and Kothari. He was forcefully taken to an unknown location, where he was assaulted and tortured by Banerjee, Kunal Verma, and the hired goons," Malabika alleged. The accused threatened the filmmaker with false implication in a narcotics case if he failed to pay Rs 64 lakh. "During this illegal confinement, the accused seized his two mobile phones, forcibly extracted his personal data and passwords, and threatened to misuse them," the FIR stated. The victim was taken to a hotel where he was staying and then moved to an unknown villa on June 1. Malabika alleged that her husband managed to arrange and pay approximately Rs 23 lakh to the accused between May 31 and June 3 under immense mental pressure. She wrote an email on June 3 to concerned senior police officers in Goa who managed to rescue her husband on June 4.

‘Digital arrest' scam in Thane: 3 arrested for duping man of Rs 3.04 crore; money converted to crypto
THANE: Thane cyber police arrested three men for allegedly duping a city resident of Rs 3.04 crore through a sophisticated 'digital arrest' scam. This scam involved impersonating govt officials and threatening victims with fake legal action. The accused – Kishore Bansilal Jain (63), a cooperative society chairman from Dadar; Mahesh Pavan Kothari (36), a garment trader from Santacruz; and Dhaval Santosh Bhalerao (26), a cosmetics businessman from Bhandup – were arrested on June 19. Investigations revealed they transferred Rs 82.46 lakh of the fraud proceeds overseas using cryptocurrency. The money was converted into Tether (USDT), a type of Virtual Digital Asset (VDA)—a stable cryptocurrency pegged to the US dollar—commonly used for cross-border transactions and often exploited in online scams due to its speed and semi-anonymous nature. According to the FIR registered at Thane police station, the fraudsters initially contacted the victim claiming to be from a courier company, alleging that a parcel sent in his name was seized. The package allegedly contained a laptop, 140 grams of drugs, a Thai passport, three debit cards, and 4 kg of clothes. The accused used multiple beneficiary bank accounts to layer the stolen funds before converting them to cryptocurrency for overseas transfer, said deputy commissioner of police (Cyber) Parag Manere.
