Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi performs 1st robotic lung transplant in gulf region
With this landmark complex surgery, two patients have now successfully undergone robotic lung transplants, marking a major milestone in the region's advanced surgical and organ transplant capabilities.
Both patients had idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) as well as secondary pulmonary hypertension, a progressive condition that gradually scars the lungs and makes breathing increasingly difficult.
These surgeries were quite complex due to pulmonary hypertension, a condition that puts extra strain on the heart and lungs. To support the patients during the operation, the medical team used Veno-Arterial ECMO, a technique that temporarily takes over the work of the heart and lungs while the damaged lungs are replaced.
These life-saving surgeries would not have been possible without the extraordinary generosity of organ donor families, whose selfless gifts make such transplants possible.
The hospital also acknowledges the critical role played by healthcare professionals from donor hospitals, the National Programme for Organ Donation and Transplantation – HAYAT, the Department of Health- Abu Dhabi, and the National Centre at the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP).
Further solidifying its leadership in regional transplant medicine, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has surpassed a significant milestone this year, completing over 60 lung transplants since the relaunch of the programme in 2022, establishing itself as the most advanced and active centre of its kind in the region.
These cases exemplify the programme's potential and underscores Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi's emergence as a global referral hub for patients with end-stage lung disease, including complex conditions such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease as well as Interstitial Lung Disease, Cystic Fibrosis, Pulmonary Hypertension, and Bronchiectasis.

Through the collaborative efforts across 36 local entities in the emirate, the Ministry succeeded in surpassing this target by over 20%. The success was driven by the adoption of innovative promotional strategies that enhanced the impact and human dimension of health awareness messaging. Awareness workshops held at the Majlis of H.H. Mohammed bin Hamad Al Sharqi, Crown Prince of Fujairah, along with the engagement of the Fujairah Youth Council, the Federal Youth Authority, universities, ministries, and healthcare entities, played a key role in the programme's success. They also highlighted the effectiveness of the Government Accelerators model in delivering transformative societal change. Innovative technologies Building on the success in Fujairah, Hayat expanded to cover Northern Emirates, thanks to the flexibility and scalability of the model. The project continued to deliver impactful results by producing compelling visual content documenting donor and recipient stories. Cost, convenience and health: Middle East consumers are reshaping the future of food, PwC report finds

Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia – PwC Middle East today launched its Voice of the Consumer 2025: Middle East findings, revealing how consumers in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar and Egypt are rethinking what, where and how they eat. The findings point to a new consumer reality: cost-conscious decisions are now being made along with a surge in demand for wellness, personalised nutrition and smarter, tech-enabled food systems. At the core of this transformation is a regional consumer who is financially aware, culturally rooted and increasingly health focused. While almost half of the survey respondents cite cost of living as the most pressing national concern, many still make room for convenience, with 53% ordering takeaway at least once a week, well above the global average of 34%. Health is fast becoming a lifestyle driver, with 67% actively concerned about ultra-processed foods and pesticides in what they eat. The report notes a surge in wearable tech, use of health apps and openness to weight-loss prescriptions, with 9% already using GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic and Mounjaro, nearly twice the global figure. Consumers are also turning to smart solutions, with over 40% using generative AI for personalised meal and fitness plans. Canadian University Dubai to lead three DFF funded projects to advance healthcare innovation
Dubai, UAE: Researchers from the Canadian University Dubai (CUD) have been awarded three separate grants from the Dubai Future Foundation (DFF) Research, Development, and Innovation (RDI) Program to advance the application of technologies to improve the health of people in the UAE. CUD faculty will be leading each of the projects, that will develop tools to improve health outcomes and position the UAE at the forefront of technology-driven healthcare solutions. The university's School of Engineering, Applied Science and Technology has secured two grants to support projects aimed at advancing technologies that support diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of healthcare. Led by CUD's Prof. Firuz Kamalov, in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi School of Management and the University of Huddersfield, a team of researchers will pioneer an Explainable Artificial Intelligence system to support the early detection of dementia and to develop an understanding of its potential progression. The project has the capacity to deliver a major step forward in transforming dementia care through AI-driven innovation that can deliver earlier diagnosis to improve patient treatment, guide clinical decisions, and offer vital support to families. Meanwhile, another project in the same School of Engineering Applied Science and Technology is led by Associate Professor, Dr. Haythem El-Messiry, in partnership with researchers from Shandong University and the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence. This project will harness the power of Volume Electron Microscopy (VEM) to enhance biological research capabilities. VEM involves a group of electron microscopy techniques for revealing the 3D ultrastructure of organisms at nanometer resolution. The technology is heralded as a revolutionary advancement in imaging to unravel biological complexity at scale, supporting the progression of research in health sciences. This project aims to develop a fast, robust, and high-precision VEM image processing workflow which can achieve high-throughput and high-resolution large-scale biological 3D structure analysis to effectively bridge the gap between cell biology and tissue biology analysis. A third project in the university's School of Health Sciences and Psychology will embark on a pioneering project to establish a Health Technology Assessment (HTA) System in the UAE, to improve evidence-based decision-making in healthcare. Aiming to digitize health systems and promote multi-sectoral and multidisciplinary approaches, the project will integrate AI and web-based platforms, to enable more informed decisions about the value and reimbursement of health technologies. Led by CUD Assistant Professor, Dr. Mohammed AlKhaldi, the research team will also include CUD Associate Professor, Dr. Wissam Ghash, along with collaborators from McGill University, Canada and University of Bonn, Germany. Each of the projects aims to contribute to the UAE's strategic vision to be a world leader in healthcare and wellbeing. Speaking about the awards, CUD Provost, Dr. Adam Fenech said, 'These grants recognize CUD's leading role in health research and innovation in the UAE and wider region.
