Merrill's 2 homers off Wheeler help the Padres beat the Phillies 5-4
Merrill hadn't homered since May 27, a span of 35 games. He hit a two-run, opposite-field shot to left center with one out in the second to tie the game at 2. He appeared relieved and gently pumped his right fist as he rounded first base and then motioned toward the Padres' bullpen.
His solo shot to right center with one out in the sixth tied the game at 4.
Machado's sac fly off Jordan Romano brought in Fernando Tatis Jr., who had greeted Tanner Banks (2-1) with a one-out single.
Wheeler was
named to the National League All-Star team
but won't pitch because of his start Saturday. He
was replaced Friday
by San Diego reliever Adrian Morejon.
Wheeler allowed four runs and six hits in six innings, struck out six and walked one. It was just the fourth time in 19 starts this season that Wheeler allowed more than two earned runs.

LONDON (AP) — Jannik Sinner's Wimbledon title might mean he'll be able to keep Darren Cahill around as one of his coaches beyond this season — by winning the friendly wager they made before Sunday's final at the All England Club. Back in January, while Sinner was on his way to winning the Australian Open , it came out that Cahill would be leaving his role as one of the No. 1-ranked player's two coaches at the end of the 2025. After Sinner beat Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 for the championship at Wimbledon on Sunday, Cahill was asked whether he would reconsider the decision to depart the team. 'I don't want to answer this,' Cahill responded. 'You know what? You just need to ask Jannik that.' So an Italian reporter followed those instructions and did put the topic to Sinner, who smiled and paused. 'It depends,' Sinner began, 'Whether I want to tell the truth or not.' And then he proceeded to explain the whole situation in Italian, revealing that maybe Cahill's exit is not set in stone, after all. That's because the two of them had a conversation on Saturday night. 'We had a bet before the final. He said: 'If you win tomorrow, you can decide whether or not I stay,'' Sinner recounted. 'Now the choice is mine. I've always looked for a person who is honest, a person who gives me a lot, not necessarily only on the tennis court, but (about) how to live.' Sinner went on to say that he would love to have Cahill stick around. Sinner also did acknowledge that if Cahill did continue to work alongside co-coach Simone Vagnozzi, Cahill probably would not travel on tour as much as he does currently. 'The season is long. SAN ROQUE, Spain (AP) — American Talor Gooch won LIV Golf Andalucia on Sunday for his second LIV Golf title in three visits to Valderrama and fourth overall on the Saudi-funded tour. Gooch closed with a 1-under 70 to finish at 8 under, a stroke ahead of Spanish star Jon Rahm (65). Rahm led Legion XIII to its third team title of the season. Gooch has a record 13 trophies – four regular-season individual wins, seven regular-season team wins, one team championship in 2022 with 4Aces and one individual championship in 2023. MLB-best Tigers limping into All-Star Game break with season-high, 4-game losing streak after sweep
DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Tigers were showered with a smattering of boos as they walked off the field for the last time before the All-Star Game. Seattle defeated Detroit 8-4 on Sunday, sealing a three-game sweep that gave the Major League-leading Tigers a season-high, four-game losing streak. 'We've stumbled a little going into the break,' Tigers right-hander Jack Flaherty acknowledged. 'But I think if you told everyone in here and in Detroit what record we'd have in the first half, where we would be in the division, where we would be overall and that we would have six All-Stars, I think a lot of people would be happy with that.' The Tigers are 59-38, giving them the best record going into the All-Star Game for the seventh time in team history and first since 2006. Detroit has an 11 1/2-game lead over second-place Minnesota in the Central, giving it the largest lead in the division or league at the break in franchise history. The Tigers will be represented by a team-record six All-Stars: pitchers Tarik Skubal and Casey Mize, outfielders Riley Greene and Javier Baez, second baseman Gleyber Torres and infielder Zach McKinstry. Detroit even had its bat boy, Frankie Boyd, voted into the Midsummer Classic on Tuesday night in Atlanta. 'I want our guys to be proud and also hungry,' manager A.J. Hinch said.
