Prep baseball: West Ranch defeats Mater Dei to capture Southern Section Division 2 title
"In my ears, on my eyes," said West Ranch pitcher Hunter Manning of the insect invasion. "You have to keep going."

After 101 pitches in the Southern Section Division 2 championship game Saturday night, Manning celebrated by catching a pop fly for the final out with runners on second and third to close out a 2-1 win over Mater Dei and finish his senior season with a 10-0 pitching record as he heads off to UC Irvine.
It was the final game for coach Ryan Lindgreen, who is stepping down to devote more time to his three young children. Like last season when Hart coach Jim Ozella ended his coaching career with a Division 2 championship, Lindgreen got to celebrate the same way. West Ranch has decided not to play in next week's Southern California regionals.
Errors got Mater Dei in trouble from the beginning, when a dropped fly ball off a hit by leadoff batter Landon Hu led to a West Ranch run in the first inning. Then a throwing error on a ground ball set up an RBI single by Ryan Oh in the fourth for a 2-0 lead.
Manning was in control for much of the game. He retired the first nine batters in order and finished with six strikeouts and no walks. But a one out error in the seventh gave Mater Dei an opening as Manning began to tire. Bradley Beaudreau singled and Brady Guth hit an RBI single to make it 2-1. After a flyout, Mater Dei had the tying and winning runs at second and third.

On a 3-and-1 count to CJ Ciampa, Manning caught a pop up between home and first, launching the West Ranch celebratory dogpile. This team had two no-hitters in the playoffs and a walk-off hit from Ty Diaz in the semifinals to come away with the first championship in school history.
Manning also gets bragging rights in the family. His uncle, Pat, was a top player at Mater Dei in 1999 and teammate of Mater Dei coach Richard Mercado.
Glendora 2, San Dimas 0: Aaron Jacobsen delivered two doubles and the pitching duo of Tanner Gable and Brayden Johnson combined for the shutout in the Division 3 championship game.

Johnson threw the final 3⅔ innings, allowing one hit with two strikeouts and no walks. Santiago Garza had three hits.
Estancia 4, Pasadena Marshall 3: A three-run triple by Jake Humphries in the bottom of the seventh inning wiped out a 3-1 deficit and gave Estancia the Division 6 championship.

The Golden State Warriors took him in the second round of the 1994 NBA Draft, and he was subsequently traded to the Lakers. He played two seasons with the Purple and Gold and averaged 3.1 points and 2.4 rebounds in 8.9 minutes a game. The 6-foot-9 big man was nicknamed "Pig" because his facial features resembled those of that specific mammal. After leaving the Lakers, Miller spent six more seasons in the NBA. He also spent time with the Yakima Sun Kings of the Continental Basketball Association and won league championships there in 2003 and 2006. West Indies hold their nerves to beat Pakistan in T20 thriller
LAUDERHILL, Fla. (AP) — Jason Holder took four wickets and then smashed a boundary off the final ball of the game to lift West Indies to a thrilling two-wicket victory over Pakistan on Saturday and level the three-match Twenty20 cricket international series. The veteran allrounder bowled an inspired spell to take 4-19 off four overs, as Pakistan struggled to 133 for nine after it won the toss and batted in Florida. The West Indies reply also stumbled as Pakistan's spinners kept scoring difficult but late cameos by Gudakesh Motie and Romario Shepherd kept West Indies just about in the contest before Holder's heroics off Pakistan talisman Shahid Shah Afridi's final delivery clinched it. It is the first T20 victory for West Indies in seven matches, a span that includes a heavy 5-0 series defeat to Australia, on top of a test series sweep last month. 'Been a tough couple of weeks for us,' captain Shai Hope said. 'We always try to get better, the guys have put in a lot of hard work. 'Hopefully today is the turnaround we are looking for.' Earlier, Hasan Nawaz's 40 from 23 balls and captain Salman Agha's 38 from 33 deliveries led Pakistan from a precarious 53-4 in the 10th over, but 133 looked a vulnerable target at the innings break. Fresh from taking three wickets in Pakistan's 14-run win in the opening game at the same venue on Thursday, Mohammad Nawaz took another three Saturday, returning 3-14 from his four overs. When Roston Chase was teased into a big shot by Saim Ayub, West Indies had sunk to 70-5 in the 14th over and looking at a steep mountain to climb. Needing eight runs from the final over, Afridi removed Shepherd off the second ball, with Holder and new batter Shamar Joseph only able to score singles off the next three balls. Afridi then bowled a wide to leave West Indies needing three runs from the final ball. Holder then found the gap at backward square to score the boundary they needed and end their six T20 match losing streak. 'We've had a fair bit of criticism which is warranted,' player-of-the-match Holder said. 'We haven't done justice to our potential. 'We can be a lot better, consistency has definitely plagued us.' Aaron Civale stars as the White Sox beat the Angels 1-0 to surpass 2024 win total
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Aaron Civale pitched one-hit ball into the seventh inning, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Los Angeles Angels 1-0 on Saturday night to surpass their win total from last season. Chicago improved to 42-69 with its 10th win in 14 games since the All-Star break. It finished with a 41-121 record in 2024, breaking the modern major league record for most losses in a season. The White Sox scored their only run on Kyle Teel's RBI single in the second against Kyle Hendricks (6-8). Teel drove in Luis Robert Jr., who reached on a leadoff single. Civale (3-6) struck out eight in 6 1/3 innings. He is 2-0 in his last three starts, allowing an unearned run and seven hits in 17 1/3 innings. The Angels got their only hit when Zach Neto beat out a slow roller down the third base line leading off the fourth. It was the team's third consecutive loss. Brandon Eisert retired each of his five batters, and Jordan Leasure finished the one-hitter for his third save in seven opportunities. Brooks Baldwin had two of Chicago's six hits. The White Sox played without infielder Miguel Vargas, who was scratched because of a left oblique strain. Key moment Nolan Schanuel walked after Neto's hit. But Civale retired the next three batters.
