Nikola Jokić cries tears of joy, takes champagne shower after his horse wins race in Serbia

Yahoo5 days ago
Much was made about Nikola Jokić's stoic reaction to winning the 2023 NBA championship.
This is not that.
Jokić, whose love of his horses is well-documented, watched one of them win a race in his home country of Serbia on Sunday. Arena Sport TV documented the action and Jokić's reaction in a video that the Denver Nuggets shared Sunday afternoon.
Jokić let the emotions fly.

After his horse crossed the finish line, Jokić put his head in his hands in tears. He then hopped a fence to access the track, still in tears as he approached his horse and his driver with his arms wide open. He then shared a hug with the driver and gave his horse a pat on the back.
The tears kept flowing as he walked with his team to the celebration circle. There, Jokić was in charge of the magnum bottle of champagne. He popped the cork, then sprayed down his team, horse included.
He then proceeded to pour champagne on the heads of his team members while saving the final champagne shower for himself.
It was a display of unbridled joy.
Cue up Jokić's stoic reaction in the immediate aftermath of leading the Nuggets to the NBA championship in 2023:
"It's good," Jokić told ESPN when asked how it feels to win his first championship. "The job is done. We can go home now."
This reaction resulted in jokes about how much Jokić does or doesn't care about basketball. Which were, of course, silly.
Jokić has been the best basketball player in the world for several years running. He's a three-time MVP and a two-time Olympic medalist in addition to being an NBA champion. Of course he cares about basketball. A lot. One doesn't reach his level without caring.
And he did let his guard down in the ensuing celebrations in the Nuggets locker room ... :
... and again during Denver's championship parade:
But it's fair to say that Jokić's love for his horses and their racing success holds an unparalleled place in his heart.
Nothing — at least in public — seems to come close.

Sixers big man Joel Embiid in attendance as Phillies take on Tigers

The NBA offseason calendar has flipped to August as now is the time for players to begin preparation for the upcoming season. Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid is continuing to rehab as he works his way back from April knee surgery--his second in 14 months--but appears to be in good spirits. The Philadelphia Phillies are continuing their march to the postseason, and on Saturday, played host to the Detroit Tigers. The contest featured an excellent pitching matchup as Zack Wheeler took the mound for Philadelphia while Tarik Skubal was on the bump for Detroit. The two are legitimate contenders for the Cy Young award in their respective leagues. Embiid pulled up to Citizens Bank Park--as he does regularly--to take in the Phillies vs. Tigers matchup. The Sixers will be counting on Embiid to be ready to roll when training camp begins. After playing only 19 games due to the left knee limiting him, the big fella is taking his time and hopes to be ready for when the season begins in October. Lakers' Adou Thiero spotted working out at team practice facility

Los Angeles Lakers rookie Adou Thiero was pictured working out at the team practice facility on Friday in preparation for his upcoming rookie campaign in the NBA. Thiero averaged a career-high 15.1 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.6 steals on 54.5% shooting from the field in 27 games as a junior last season at Arkansas. He was tied for the most points on the team (407), despite missing eight games due to a left knee hyperextension. The 36th pick has been around for much of the offseason after missing summer league as he continued to recover from his knee injury. He was also among those on hand to support Luka Dončić after the five-time All-Star signed a three-year, $165 million contract extension on Saturday. Thiero registered eight 20-point performances with the Razorbacks, including a season-high 26 points and 10 rebounds on Dec. 7 in a win over UTSA. He ranked second in the SEC in field-goal percentage and eighth in box plus-minus (plus-10.6). The 21-year-old Thiero reportedly agreed to sign a three-year, $5.95 million contract with the Lakers via the second-round pick exception. The first two years are guaranteed on the contract, which includes a team option in the last season. After missing summer league, Thiero is expected to be ready for the start of training camp next month. He is working to prepare himself to contribute to the team and is eager to get to work.

Napheesa Collier injury update: Lynx superstar exits Aces win

The Minnesota Lynx lost superstar forward and 2025 WNBA MVP favorite Napheesa Collier to an ankle injury on the road against the Las Vegas Aces on Saturday afternoon. While the Lynx were up 92-49 over the Aces late in the third quarter, Collier fell to the court and needed assistance to get up and leave the game. The team soon ruled her out for the rest of the contest with a right ankle injury. Minnesota coach Cheryl Reeve had no update on Collier's condition during her postgame press conference. The Lynx got the 111-58 victory, but losing Collier for any substantial amount of time would be absolutely catastrophic for Minnesota's WNBA title hopes. We'll keep you updated once we know more about Collier's injury status.
