Coupang breaks ground on AI-powered logistics center in Jecheon

Korea Herald19-03-2025
Korean e-commerce giant Coupang is to build an AI-powered logistics center in Jecheon, North Chungcheong Province, the firm said Wednesday.
The groundbreaking ceremony was held at Jecheon's third industrial complex, with attendees including Coupang CEO Park Dae-jun, North Chungcheong Gov. Eom Tae-young and other officials, along with over 200 guests.
Coupang will establish a 52,800 square meter logistics base for a total of more than 100 billion won ($69 million). The facility, equipped with AI-based logistics technology, is scheduled for completion in June 2026 with operations set to begin in 2027.
Serving as a key logistics hub for Coupang's Rocket Delivery service, the center will enhance same-day and next-day delivery for customers in the Chungcheong and Gangwon provinces.
The facility is also expected to create 500 jobs, including employment of young professionals, increasing Jecheon's population inflow and helping to revitalize the local economy.
Local officials, including Jecheon Mayor Kim Chang-gyu and North Chungcheong Vice Administration Gov. Lee Dong-ok, welcomed the new hub, citing its potential to boost jobs and the economy.
'The Jecheon logistics center will enhance Rocket Delivery services in the region,' said CEO Park Dae-jun. 'By leveraging AI-driven logistics systems, Coupang remains committed to job creation and supporting small businesses in local communities.'
The center is part of Coupang's nationwide logistics expansion plan. Following the opening and new constructions of six hubs in 2024 and the Ulsan hub set for completion this year, Coupang plans to invest 3 trillion won to establish nine additional logistics hubs across South Korea by 2026, further strengthening Rocket Delivery coverage.

GS Caltex becomes first oil refiner to win Red Dot awards for app innovation

South Korean oil refiner GS Caltex said Monday that it has won two main honors at the 2025 Red Dot Design Award for its Energy Plus app, recognizing the company for its continued efforts to improve the customer experience at gas stations through digital innovation. The company became the first oil refiner to win the industry honor. The Energy Plus app received accolades in two categories — Apps and Interface & User Experience Design — under the Brands & Communication Design segment. Entries are evaluated on criteria including creativity, innovation, design completeness and emotional impact on users. Launched in 2021, the Energy Plus app has introduced new features to enhance the fueling experience, such as the Quick Refuel service, which allows customers to pre-register fuel types, amounts and payment methods for faster transactions using a barcode or PIN. This year, GS Caltex became the first Korean oil company to integrate its app with Car Play and Android Auto, enabling drivers to locate gas stations, access discounts and manage rewards directly from their car dashboards. The company also rolled out the Shake & Pay service for quick app access and updated its widget design so it can be easily used without launching the app. In recognition of these efforts, GS Caltex has held the top spot in the gas station segment of the National Customer Satisfaction Index for 17 consecutive years as of July last year. 'We will continue to improve the Energy Plus app so customers can enjoy a seamless and intuitive service experience,' said Kim Chang-soo, vice president of GS Caltex's Mobility & Marketing Division.

S. Korea to host APEC ministerial meeting on food security

South Korea will host a meeting of agriculture ministers from the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation member economies this weekend to discuss measures to bolster food security in the region, officials said Monday. The meeting will take place in Incheon, west of Seoul, on Sunday under the theme "Driving Innovation in Agri-food Systems for Shared Prosperity," according to officials from Seoul's agriculture ministry. Ministers from the 21 APEC member economies, including the United States, China, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Australia and Russia, are expected to attend the upcoming meeting to discuss strategies for enhancing food security in the Asia-Pacific region. "As concerns over food security are growing amid the climate crisis and global supply chain disruptions, it is especially meaningful for South Korea, a nation at the forefront of agricultural innovation, to engage in discussions on food security cooperation with APEC member economies," Agriculture Minister Song Mi-ryung said in a press release. "Through this meeting, Seoul will work to further solidify international cooperation in the agricultural sector and actively promote the value and excellence of Korean food and agricultural products," she added. This year's meeting will also explore ways to harness artificial intelligence technology to drive agricultural innovation and respond to challenges posed by climate change and supply chain instability. From Wednesday to Saturday, Korea will also host various working-level meetings to discuss APEC's road map for strengthening regional food security by 2030, along with other related issues. (Yonhap)
