School roof collapse in western India kills 7 children and injures at least 21
NEW DELHI — The roof of a government middle school building collapsed Friday in India's western state of Rajasthan, killing 7 children and injuring at least 21, a senior police official said.
The collapse occurred soon after the students had reached their classrooms and were about to start the school assembly, said police official Amit Kumar.
It is still unclear what caused the roof to collapse.
The school, located in Piplod village of Jhalawar district, has students studying up to eighth grade, or what is called a middle school in India.
A total of around 35 students were present when the roof collapsed. All seven fatalities were students from seventh and eighth grade, Kumar said. The injured have been transported to two local hospitals for treatment.
The office of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi lamented the accident in a social media post, calling it 'tragic' and 'deeply saddening.'
'My thoughts are with the affected students and their families in this difficult hour,' the statement read, adding that authorities are providing 'all possible assistance.'

Staff first closed White Pine Beach on Saturday after the 'nuisance bear' was spotted several times that morning, and the closure will remain in effect until further notice. A Metro Vancouver spokesperson told CTV News several bears in the area have become food-conditioned and are attracted to the beach's picnic areas. 'If bears become food-habituated they can lose their fear of people, so it's important that the public follow any food-related restrictions that are in place,' the spokesperson wrote. The district also imposed a cooking ban throughout təmtəmíxʷtən, or Belcarra Regional Park, on Monday. Other areas within the park are still open to the public.

Witnesses reported hearing an aircraft engine revving and a splash in the water, KSBW-TV reported. People on shore reported seeing debris wash up from the crashed plane. The twin-engine Beech 95-B55 Baron with three people aboard took off from the San Carlos airport at 10:11 p.m. and was last seen at 10:37 p.m. near Monterey, according to flight tracking data from Coast Guard boat and helicopter crews were launched to search for the victims, with assistance from local law enforcement and fire agencies. Man dies trying to cross the English Channel from France
PARIS (AP) — One person has died after attempting to cross the English Channel from a beach in northern France, local authorities said on Saturday, bringing the death toll this year in the perilous waterway to at least 18. The Pas-de-Calais department's prefecture told The Associated Press that a man was found in cardiac arrest on board a boat which had attempted to reach Britain and then turned back toward French shores. The man was found near Équihen beach, close to the town of Boulogne-sur-mer. He was pronounced dead despite the efforts of firefighters to revive him. An investigation into the cause of his death has been opened.
