Men's basketball: Gophers add veteran point guard via transfer portal
Western Michigan point guard Chansey Willis committed to the U on Monday, following combo guard Langston Reynolds from Northern Colorado on Sunday.

'Chansey is a great playmaker who makes others around him better,' U head coach Niko Medved said in a statement. 'He is a dynamic scorer who can use his speed to his advantage. In addition, he's a great two-way player and we're excited to have him on our team.'
Willis, who is listed at 6-foot-2 and 190 pounds, averaged 16.8 points and 5.8 assists in 24 games last season. He shot 43% from the field, 28% from 3-point range and 72% from the free-throw line.
Willis might have two years of eligibility remaining for Minnesota, following the start of his college career at Saginaw Valley State (Division II) as a freshman and Henry Ford College (a junior college) as a sophomore. Within the last year, current college players have not had years spent at junior college count against their NCAA eligibility.
Willis, a Detroit native, was the state of Michigan's Gatorade Player of the Year in 2022.

The program officially announced Reynolds' addition on Monday.
'We're excited to add Langston to our team,' Medved said in a release. 'Langston is a physical, athletic guard who plays well in transition, can get downhill and has good rebounding ability. He also has a great personality and we're thrilled to have him in the Maroon and Gold.'
The Gophers now have four scholarship spots still available for next season.

Quarterback is always the most scrutinized position in college football, but in 2025, that pressure might fall on the freshmen. With spring ball wrapping up and fall camp on the horizon, several high-profile QB recruits are already making noise-earning live reps, drawing praise from coaches, and in some cases, pushing for starting jobs on Day 1. We're no longer in an era where freshmen automatically sit. Between the transfer portal reshuffling depth charts and elite recruits enrolling early, true freshmen are walking into real competition the moment they step on campus. From future SEC stars to Big Ten wild cards, here are five freshman quarterbacks who could shake up the 2025 season. Keelon Russell - Alabama Alabama's quarterback room is loaded again, but it's Keelon Russell-the true freshman out of Duncanville, Texas-who's turning heads early. He was named Gatorade Player of the Year in Texas after a blistering senior season that saw him throw for 3,483 yards and 38 touchdowns while completing 72% of his passes. Ranked as the No. 2 quarterback in the 2025 class, Russell has the size, poise, and accuracy to play SEC football right now. He enrolled early and went through spring ball under new offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb, who currently has veteran Ty Simpson as the projected starter. But with former Washington standout Austin Mack and five-star Russell both on his heels, nothing is locked in long-term. Simpson hasn't thrown a career touchdown, and Grubb has already called Mack the "best pure thrower" on the roster. That means Russell could be one big fall camp away from jumping the line-or, at minimum, being next in if Alabama's offense sputters early. Deuce Knight - Auburn When Deuce Knight flipped from Notre Dame to Auburn, it sent a clear message that Hugh Freeze plans to build around dynamic quarterbacks who can win in the SEC. Knight is a 6-foot-4, 210-pound dual-threat weapon who enrolled early and immediately got to work in the Tigers' system. His natural tools were on display all spring, and by all accounts, he didn't look like a freshman. He enters a QB room that includes Jackson Arnold, the former Oklahoma five-star, and Stanford transfer Ashton Daniels. Arnold has the early edge, but Knight's raw talent is undeniable. He threw for over 5,700 yards and accounted for 85 total touchdowns in high school, while also rushing for nearly 1,500 yards. Freeze is no stranger to early QB competition, and if Arnold slips, Knight could quickly go from project to playmaker. Bryce Underwood - Michigan There may not be a more hyped freshman QB in the country than Bryce Underwood. The five-star from Belleville, Michigan, is the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2025 class and gives head coach Sherrone Moore a massive piece to the future. Underwood has already drawn comparisons to Josh Allen thanks to his arm strength, mobility, and rare physical tools. What makes this intriguing is Michigan's unsettled QB depth chart with Mikey Keene and Jadyn Davis in the fold. Underwood enrolled early, and he'll need a strong fall to solidify his spot, but the opportunity is real. In fact, there's a real chance he wins the starting job before Week 1 even arrives. Malik Washington - Maryland Malik Washington might be the most under-the-radar freshman QB in the country, but he's walking into one of the most QB-friendly offenses in the Big Ten. He chose to stay home and play for Mike Locksley at Maryland after throwing for 2,979 yards and 29 touchdowns as a high school senior at Archbishop Spalding in Maryland. At 6-foot-4, 215 pounds, Washington already looks the part physically. And with the Terps needing to reset their offense, there's a real opening for a new face to take over. If Washington impresses during fall camp, he could leapfrog the competition and become one of the most productive true freshmen in the Big Ten. Julian Lewis - Colorado Julian "JuJu" Lewis might be one of the most fascinating quarterback stories in college football. The five-star QB reclassified from the 2026 class and enrolled early at Colorado to play for Deion Sanders' Buffaloes, choosing Boulder over the likes of USC and Georgia. He's drawn comparisons to Bryce Young for his pocket presence, calm under pressure, and elite football IQ. Colorado brought in Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter, who started all of last season and is expected to lead initially-but Lewis is more than just a developmental player. He was electric in spring practices, and if Coach Prime is looking to build a long-term winner, JuJu could be the guy to start that process right away. It wouldn't be a surprise if Lewis saw the field this season-even if he doesn't start Week 1. 2025 Outlook? All five of these freshmen were elite recruits for a reason. But in 2025, opportunity meets preparation. Whether it's earning a starting role outright or waiting for their moment midseason, this group could reshape the national landscape before we even reach November. Nazareth Academy star Jaden Fauske named the Gatorade Illinois baseball player of the year
Nazareth Academy's Jaden Fauske was recently named the Gatorade Illinois baseball player of the year. It's an award that celebrates a player's accomplishments on and off the field. It's probably more the on the field work that will get him selected in the upcoming MLB Draft, but Fauske's much more than just a great baseball player, he's also an elite chess player, and a state scholar Fauske earned a starting job on the varsity lineup during his freshman season at Nazareth Academy. He helped the program win its first state title that year, finishing a historic career with a 136-21 record. "Jaden is different. Jaden's at-bats were different. Jaden, the ball coming off his bat was different, the distance is different, the height is different. He threw 34 innings on the mound for us as a sophomore and he gave up two earned runs over 34 innings," head coach Lee Milano said. The multi-talented outfielder helped Nazareth win back-to-back state titles his freshman and sophomore seasons. His impressive offensive skillset as a left-handed batter led to a .492 career batting average, with 12 home runs and 136 RBI. "When I'm in the hole and on deck, there's a lot of things I'm telling myself, and trying to learn about the pitcher, but as soon as I step in the box my mind just goes silent," Fauske said. Fauske has been learning how to stay one step ahead of his opponents since a young age; not only playing baseball, but by mastering chess. "I think I got third place in state when I was in fourth or fifth grade. I feel like people, they kind of get surprised when I tell them that," he said. Fauske continues to play chess as a hobby, and feels it benefits him on the field too. "Hitting, every at bat is kind of like a chess match between the pitcher; you know, trying to predict their tendencies, what they might do at a certain count, stuff like that. So I think there's definitely a correlation there," he said. Does Fauske challenge his teammates to play him in chess? "They don't give me much of a challenge, to be honest, but, yeah, we play sometimes," he said. "AP Scholar, Illinois State Scholar, 4.3 grade point average, elite chess player, Jaden works extremely hard," Milano said. A talented player who will now either continue his career collegiately at national champion LSU, or, as a projected first-round MLB Draft pick, go pro. "I mean, chasing the dream of playing in the big leagues, either way you go to LSU or go to the draft. You can't really go wrong," he said. While Fauske has a lot to look forward to in his future, he will never forget memories made at Nazareth Academy. "I'm going to miss playing for Coach Milano and those coaches, and playing alongside my friends … wearing the Nazareth uniform across my chest," he said. There is only one thing his coach might not miss. "Jaden hit anywhere, on a daily basis, 8 to 10 homers in our field where our field is backed up to the woods. So the balls, once they're out there, we can't get them, we can't find them. I figured Jaden owes the school about 600 baseballs right now, and I told him whatever happens at some point when he signs that pro contract, a couple dozen balls back to the program wouldn't be a bad idea," Milano said. Something that could apparently be a problem for Fauske the rest of his career.

While he may not be the prospect that Lawrence was, he is still a good quarterback prospect for a team. Klubnik has a talented arm with good mental makeup that should allow him to play early in his NFL career and find success in the process. He has excellent pocket presence to evade pressure and extends plays, something that is invaluable when it comes to finding early success in the NFL. He will likely lead Clemson to another ACC championship game appearance, maybe even a College Football Playoff appearance, but we just need to see more flash from his arm, and he has a chance to compete for the top spot in this class.
